San Pancho Golf Course Gets Certification
|

Las Huertas Golf Course, an executive 9-hole golf course located in San Pancho, Riviera Nayarit, was recently endorsed by the Mexican Golf Federation. The 3,958 yards, par 32 course was built in 2005-2006 and is located next to the beach, with several holes featuring ocean views. It was developed along soursops, cinnamons, mangos, tamarinds and many other native trees.
A considerable amount of work has been accomplished over the past four years to allow the course to comply with international standards. It was this past July 12, that Ana Luisa Hernández Acosta, President of the Handicap Ratings Committee of the Mexican Golf Federation, visited the course to evaluate and certify it.
"We've decided to open the course to the public," commented Francisco Sandoval, who manages the course. "We have the support of municipal and state authorities to offer a new golf option in Riviera Nayarit. The inauguration will tentatively take place next October in order to cater to winter travelers, and that's an additional reason why we strived to obtain this certification," he added.

The sea turtles are coming up in healthy numbers so far this season. So far we have recorded 94 nests, which is 21 more than last year at this time. If this positive trend continues, we are in for a busy season!
We have just finished building a new Incubation Nursery which is 10.5 feet longer than our previous nursery. This larger building will increase our seasonal capacity by 10,000 hatchlings. By incubating the turtle eggs in this nursery rather than naturally on the beach we have achieved a consistent 87% hatch rate over the past 5 years. Eggs that are incubated in the beach nursery only hatch with 72% success.
The first Olive Ridley nest was collected on San Pancho Beach on June 19th and we are anxiously anticipating its hatching which is estimated to be August 3rd.
We are fortunate to have a great crew of international volunteers right now: Katy from Rhode Island, Kat from Germany; Mary, Morgen ,Lilly, Joslin, Starlie and Summer all from Arizona, and Mark and Jessica from Wisconsin.
These volunteers work together with our local team (Frank, Pedro, Andres, Juan and Pando) to bring in nests of eggs for safekeeping. We are grateful for all help-physical, finanacial, and spiritual from our supports around the world.
Please remember if you own or are renting a beach house here in San Pancho, it is very important to keep the outside lights turned off from 11pm to 6am. Nesting adults can become disoriented by artificial lighting and they can waste precious energy trying to return to the sea. Hatchlings that emerge from nests left on the beach naturally also follow artificial lights and end up crawling into people's yards instead of toward the sea. If you see and turtle hatchlings on the beach please gather them and carry them down to where the wet sand begins and let them crawl into the ocean. If you see an adult turtle on the beach, or if you see anyone digging up a nest, please call us anytime night or day at 311 258-4100 or on our cell phone 322 889-5916. Our team of volunteers is available 24/7 and we will come immediately.
Or you can see our day to day work on Facebook at: San Pancho Turtles https://www.facebook.com/pages/San-Pancho-Turtles/179273792083463 Las tortugas marinas están llegando en números sanos hasta ahora esta temporada.

4 Simple Ways to Give Your Metabolism
a Healthy Boost
|
As we age, our metabolism naturally slows down. For many, this is a rather unwelcome part of getting older; most of us aren't thrilled with the idea of carrying around extra pounds. To compensate for a slowed metabolism, your first reaction might be to reduce your calorie intake or extend your workouts. But wait! This may not be the best, or most enjoyable, solution. Instead, why not try these simple tricks to give your metabolism a gentle (and natural!) boost?
1) Eat whole foods that support your thyroid. A happy thyroid means a healthy metabolism. By keeping your thyroid healthy you can support a strong metabolic rate and maintain a healthy weight. Whole foods containing iodine such as sea veggies, seafood and strawberries are key players in keeping your thyroid healthy and your metabolism high. A small amount of iodine daily can do wonders for your metabolism. Don't overdo it though; a tiny amount is plenty. Too much iodine can be harmful.
2) Add some light weights to your workout or yoga routine. Just one day a week of doing a series of gentle toning exercises with 2/3-pound weights can do wonders for your metabolism. To give your metabolism a boost you don't need to lift heavy weights that build muscle. Instead, focus on using light weights that tone your muscles. Toning works your muscles gently, giving your metabolism a boost and helping you burn those pesky pounds. You might also consider adding some light weights to your yoga routine. Yoga sculpt classes that use weights throughout a series of yoga poses are also becoming more popular.
3) Move your body in new ways! When you repeat the same activity over and over again, your body may fall into a bit of a metabolic rut. When you practice the same series of yoga poses, jogging at the same pace, etc., your body becomes too familiar with the repetitive motion. Instead, why not gently push your body out of its comfort zone with new and dynamic movement that targets a variety of muscle groups and stimulates your metabolism? Try mixing up your yoga routine or style, do some sprints, or try a new sport like stand up paddle boarding.
4) Don't starve yourself! Severely restricting your caloric consumption can actually decrease your metabolic rate. Consuming too few calories will prompt your body to go into "starvation mode," which means that it will store calories. Ideally, you want to keep your body nutritionally satisfied with an array of quality foods. It's important to find the ratio of healthy fats, proteins and complex carbohydrates that works best for your unique body. Find your personal balance, and you'll keep your metabolism happily humming along.
