Hola,
Summer is here, can you feel the humidity yet? Stay cool and hydrated.
mangoAll over San Pancho the mango trees are filled with ripe fruits. Did you know that mangos are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They also contain an enzyme with stomach soothing properties similiar to papain found in papayas. Everyone loves mango smoothies, margartitas, salsa or just by itself, mmmmmmm

I look forward to bringing you all the happenings in our community, and share with you, the joy of living in San Pancho.

The actress visited Riviera Nayarit to offer a bachelorette party for her Best Friend in Punta Mita. "Not too shaby!", she said.

Kirsten Dunst,  who starred in Spider Man among many other movies, visited Riviera Nayarit to offer her best friend since childhood and frequent red carpet companion Molly, a bachelorette party.

"Being a maid-of-honor... not to shabby!"  she twetted, along with photos of her stay in St Regis Punta Mita, as revealed by one of the retweets by a Punta Mita official account.

During the three day party girls enjoyed  yoga on the beach, champagne dinners, a special BBQ on the terrace of their presidential suite, custom massages and being serenaded to live music from a Mexican quartet, published E! On line last Tuesday June 5.

In the past few months, Riviera Nayarit has become one of the preferred destinations for celebrities, with the visit of important personalities like Thierry Henry, Kate Hudson, Felicity Huffman, Gerry Lopez , Kim and  Kourtney Kardashian, Lady Gaga, Courteney Cox, Charlie Sheen, Mario Lopez, Sofia Vergara, among many others.

The work being made by the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) of Riviera Nayarit is evident through direct communications like the one made by Dunst in the social networks, which help position our destination as one of the best worldwide, and will highlight the importance of improving visitors' experiences for hotels, restaurants, government, service providers and the society in general.

New "No Pets In Cabin" Policy Could
Change the Way We Travel to Mexico

Many foreigners bring their beloved pets with them to Mexico each winter. Unfortunately, the new "no pets in cabin" policy recently put into place by several airlines could drastically change the way we all travel to and from Mexico.

Taco the Dog (shown above) always hangs out in our suitcase
so we don't forget to bring him to Mexico with us!

The airline agents we spoke with say that they are obeying an old Mexican government regulation that is based on laws dating back to 1950, 2004 and 2007. The SAGARPA and SENASICA offices in Mexico City informed us that it was a new international aviation law. There is also plenty of speculation by online sources that say that the airlines want to cash in by requiring pets to travel in cargo, which costs more than in-cabin pets. Either way, it seems the blame game is going in circles here.

After searching the net for hours, speaking to several airlines including the International Airport in Mexico City, SAGARPA and SENASICA, our local Mexican consulate, the Humane Society International, as well as emailing back and forth with three Mexican rescue organizations, we could still not find anyone who had (or had seen) a copy of this new policy in writing. Even theSENASICA (Mexico's National Health Service for Food Safety and Food Quality) website, which was updated in April, states that pets are allowed to travel to Mexico from the US and Canada. This raises the question, who really did decide to implement this rule and why?

Regardless, people need to be aware that the majority of airlines now prohibit pets from flying in-cabin. Here is the breakdown:

Airlines that no longer allow in-cabin pets:

  • Alaska
  • American
  • Delta
  • United
  • US Airways

Airlines that still allow in-cabin pets:
(as of the publication date of this article)

  • Air Canada - $100 CAD each way
  • Frontier - $75 USD each way
  • WestJet - $50 CAD/USD each way

Airlines that allow pets in cargo:
Keep in mind that many of these airlines enforce embargo dates due to hot weather and have special restrictions based on breed, kennel size, weight, etc., so be sure to check with your airline for specific requirements.

  • Air Canada - $270 CAD/USD per direction
  • Alaska - $100 USD each way
  • American - $175 USD per kennel
  • Delta - $200 USD one-way
  • Frontier - $150 USD each way
  • United - $189-679 USD each way (prices are based on weight)
  • US Airways - Not allowed as of March 1, 2012
  • WestJet - $50 CAD/USD each way

So if you are planning to travel to or from Mexico, be sure to contact your airline before you head to the airport. You might also want to consider driving instead of flying so you don't have to leave Fido, Taco and Panchito behind.

A Jungle Cacophony

Have you noticed the plethora of life in San Pancho right now? As spring turns to summer here in the jungle I'm in awe at the buzz of activity. I have to admit that I'm not really part of the buzz, I'm actually quite content to sit in my hammock and observe.  The heat and humidity slow my body down to a crawl and it's just as well because there is just so much to look at and listen to!  From my jungle perch my gaze darts from one intriguing phenomenon to the next, desperately trying to take it all in.

A gecko approaches me and pauses for a moment before inflating a big and bright orange pouch at his throat.  The inflated pouch is nearly as big as his entire body and I can see him struggling to hold his head up. I look around to see if any other geckos are watching this display and see none in sight.  I raise my eyebrows. Is he doing this to impress me? If so, I'm definitely impressed but I have to say that I don't think that I'm his type.

I'm then distracted by the butterfly tree.  I could spend hours watching this tree. I've yet to determine what kind of tree it is, but I bet that if the butterflies could speak they would tell me with enthusiasm.   Butterflies of every size color and shape flock to this tree, apparently enjoying its succulent blossoms.  At any one moment I can spot at least a dozen butterflies hovering around the tree.  The occasional hummingbird also comes by to really sweeten the show.

I hear a crashing in the palm above and look up to spot a squirrel flying through the air with another squirrel right on its tail. They dart easily from one palm frond to the next and then launch themselves between the trees.  I am truly amazed at their agility and ease as they literally fly through the trees.  The squirrel in the lead takes to a palm tree trunk and begins spiraling its way down the trunk, staying just out of its pursuer's grasp.   Finally they reach a stale mate, each squirrel is on either side of the tree.  I watch for a moment, eager to see who the winner will be . . .

Suddenly the jungle noises are interrupted as a Mexican voice bursts with romantic song.  A deep male voice fills the air, singing a woeful tale in Spanish that I have to admit I don't understand at all but I thoroughly enjoy anyhow!  I remember that the first time I heard a romantic outburst like this I was in shock, you simply don't hear men the USA singing sappy love songs at the top of their voice.

It is definitely a happy time here in the jungle and as I prepare to return to Colorado I know that I will miss this magical place.  There is something about the energy of the jungle and the community of San Pancho that is so unique.  We are so lucky to have such a beautiful balance of natural beauty and caring community here. As a holistic nutrition coach I know that community and the natural world are huge parts of my personal nourishment equation.  Curious to know more about holistic nutrition?
