San Pancho Music Festival

The 12th annual San Pancho Music Festival was a complete success in San Pancho last Friday February 24th. The Festival was held for three days, Friday through Sunday the 24th through the 26th. Performances were free to the public and began each afternoon at 5pm, typically ending prior to 12pm midnight.

This year the Festival moved to the community park on Avenida Tercer Mundo due to street construction and remodeling of the Plaza.

*** For more information please visit the Music Festival website:

                              2012 Music Festival

San Pancho's Music Festival is a vibrant, eclectic expression of performing art traditionally held annually for 3 days during the last weekend of February. The Music Festival attracts some of the most colorful musicians from around the world, including international acts from Europe, the U.S., Chile, Guatemala, France and Germany. Regional talent has also been retained to include the traditional Mexican and Latin music of local musicians.

It began informally in 2001, and by 2006 included some 116 performers. Traditionally there is no fee to attend, and performers are not paid. Artists come to perform because they enjoy performing in the intimate venue and magical surroundings of San Pancho. It is a truly wonderful balance of amateurs and professional performers coming together for 3 days to share an unforgettable and enriching musical experience in one of the most beautiful regions of Mexico. Donations are encouraged, but there is no intent for the Festival to profit from the performances. Additionally, proceeds from sales of music and video CDs go directly to the performing artists.

Cielo Rojo

The Valentine's dinner and live music with Joe Hadlock and Alan Sumpter was so sweet at the Bistro, we just had to do it again. What promises to be a fun-filled weekend (starting with last night's entreAmigos fundraiser), tonight's Friday Art Walk includes the usual lively scene at various spots on the main boulevard. Consider starting your stroll at Cielo Rojo's Bistro lobby & boutique for surprises, or end your evening (and the week) with cocktails and dinner accompanied by the cool, sweet sounds of Joe (accordion, keyboards) and Alan (stand up bass). Boutique/Tastings open at 6pm, live music begins at 7:30.

If you enjoyed last night's signature cocktail at entreAmigos event (Margarita Rojo), you may also want to venture into yet another delicious and exotic concoction at the Bistro tonight or anytime you crave that something special  'to top off a perfect night in San Pancho'. Our neighbors at Virtualvallarta.com recently featured Cielo Rojo's THAI MOJITO as one of "Three Essential Cocktails" stating that "...a meal (and a Thai Mojito) at the restaurant alone is worth a visit to San Pancho".

Call ahead to reserve your dinner table for parties of 4 or more.

Notes from the Ranch

Woot! This will be short as I am up to my elbows in prep work for the EntreAmigos fundraiser! Yours truly is providing the tapas, or appetizers. Here is what I have going on so far: chipotle meatballs, marinated jicama, goat cheese panela stuffed dates, bruchetta, and rosted stuffed chiles....I'm making for 75 plates so if we serve 3 of each, 5 x 3 equals 15, 15 x 75 equals 1125 little goodies we need to prep and prepare between now and 5pm tomorrow. He'p me, Jesus.
Life is grand, lots of work and play. I want more play time, though. We are going to float around the San Juan Islands in July so if I can just keep it together until then without hurting myself or someone else, it is good to go.
Lindsey the Great is now helping me at Sazn. She is a CIA (Culinary Institute of America) graduate and we are having fun banging around the kitchen together. Come and see us!
Things I am thankful for this week: early birthday gifts, dreams coming true and my sweet mechanic.
Blessings, Tamara

                            Birding with Luis

Some Benefits of Birding for the Body, Mind and Soul.

Series 2. Benefits for the Mind.

Last week I mentioned a few of the benefits of Birdwatching for the health of the physical body. Please keep in mind that I am neither a physician nor a psychologist, however I am expressing what I have experienced myself or experiences from people I have bird-watched with.

If we assume that since mind and body work together, whatever is truly beneficial for the body will, at some degree at least, be positive for the mind as well. Today I would like to share some of the aspects that I have found to be very beneficial for the overall mental health.

Birding activates perceptual and analytical abilities. For instance, when looking at any particular bird we start to observe size, color pattern, shape, behavior, habitat, distinctive markings, etc. which helps us categorizing such bird in a certain group and ideally get to the specific name.  In my experience with children and teenagers once they start observing and with a little guidance on what to observe, this is a very easy benefit to observe, even kids with a short attention span can get very interested and observe incredible details.

naranjaBirding helps memorizing; with some practice it becomes easy to remember the distinctive characteristics of each bird species.   I have known of people who engage into their local birding clubs as a way to keep their minds active and their mental skills sharp and accurate. I have known of some cases in which birding has helped preventing  Alzheimer syndrome.

When taken more seriously birding can be a way to practice studying skills. I recently met an adorable lady in her 70's who is incredibly good at studying the birds of a certain area to such extent, that whenever she had seen a bird in her list of possible species for the first time, she knows exactly what it is, she does not need to look at the book, she had already studied it!

Well, I could keep going for weeks to come with this topic.  In the meantime let's go birding and enhance our mental acuity!

Man and scopeSerie 2.
