Kimberly King - Executive Director
Hola,

Christmas here in San Pancho is a very special holiday. Our Lady of Guadalupe started on Decemeber 12 with fireworks in the early hours of the morning. The band began to play and march down Tercer Mundo , with marching teams in line and the equestrian riders. The holidays are here.
As you walk down the street you see nativity scenes in the front yards.

Art walk every Friday night from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Come out and experience art and music with a little wine tasting and great food. Pick up your Christmas gifts at the fine stores.

The perfect gift giving is helping Entre Amigos and don't be surprised if you run into Santa Claus there.

Feliz Navidad

I look forward to bringing you all the happenings in our community, and share with you, the joy of living in San Pancho.

Our Lady of Guadalupe

Virgen of GuadalupeOur Lady of Guadalupe  also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe . According to tradition, on

December 9, 1531, Juan Diego, a simple indegines peasant, had a vision of a young woman while he was on a hill in the Tepeyac desert, near  Mexico City. The lady told him to build a church exactly on the spot where they were standing. He told the local bishop, who asked for some proof. He went back and had the vision again. He told the lady that the bishop wanted proof, and she said "Bring the roses behind you." Turning to look, he found a rose bush growing behind him. He cut the roses, placed them in his poncho and returned to the bishop, saying he had brought proof. When he opened his poncho, instead of roses, there was an image of the young lady in the vision.

According to the account of Juan Diego, the Virgin Mary described herself using the Aztec Nahuatl word-name of Coatlaxopeuh(pronounced "quatlachupe") which the Spanish misunderstood as being the word "Guadalupe". In Nahuatl "Coa" meant serpent, "tla" the noun ending which can be interpreted as "the", and "xopeuh" means to crush or to stamp out, translating to mean: the one "who crushes the serpent," although Gloria Anzaldua translates it as "the one who is at one with the beasts" . This reflects Catholic theology, in understanding that Mary is the woman described in the twelfth chapter of St. John's Apocalypse.

Today, the icon is displayed in the nearby Basilica of Guadalupe, now one of the most visited Catholic shrines in the world. The Virgin of Guadalupe is Mexico's most popular religious and cultural image.

Whale Watching

               whales

These gentle giants visit this area every year during the winter months. This is where they find ideal conditions for reproduction. The males sing songs that can be heard underwater and an extensive area outside of it. It is one of natures most beautiful sounds and the loudest and strongest made by any animal.

The purpose of this serenade is to attract the females. Once the female comes close, the male begins to swim near her. He will brush against her to convince her, he is the one. Sometimes this contact causes them to jump out of the water until they are practically airborne. What a sight to see 40 tons of weight and nearly 15 meters in length show their strength.

Once she is pregnant the female will stay in tropical waters for a while and when the temperture of the water rises along with her hunger she will set out on her voyage that will bring her to feeding grounds which usually occurs around March or April.

The gestattion period of a whale lasts 11 months . She looks for shallow waters devoid of strong currents and sufficiently protected for giving birth. Most of the calves are born around mid December. The shallow waters provide them with protection and under the watchful eye of their mothers. They soon learn to swim better and follow their mothers wherever she may go.

If we follow these simple rules, the whales will continue to come and we will be able to enjoy them!

Do not get closer than 30 meters to the animals.

Do not remain with the same animals for longer than 30 minutes, especially if there are other vessels nearby.

If there are two vessels there when you reach them, it is better to look for another group of whales.

Make sure that you go on an authoriazed vessel when you go whale watching. Authorized vessels fly a numbered flag with a seal of Mexico's Department of Ecology.

San Pancho Aire Kite Shop Opens

San Pancho Aire

Summer beach trips for me, as a youth on the Eastern coast of the United States, always involved kite flying. There was the unbridled excitement of entering the tourist town, supplementing a saved allowance with promises of good behavior, and buying a new kite to fly all vacation long. The fun and beauty of kite flying is an experience that we at San Pancho Aire are trying to bring to the coastline of Riviera Nayarit. We all know that the ocean can be unforgiving on big swell days. Providing an opportunity for everyone to enjoy the coastline worry free seems like a niche that kite flying naturally fills.

San Pancho Aire has been in existence for over a year now. In an attempt to familiarize and engage the locals of San Francisco with kite flying, we have sponsored four workshops at Entre Amigos. Two of the workshops were weeklong sessions in which kids were able to not only fly existing inventory, but also create and fly kites of their own. In the spirit of keeping the enthusiasm alive, we have started the "Kites for Kids" program. Those wanting to participate donate $500 pesos which ensures a kite will be provided to the community center for free checkout. To date, San Pancho Aire was been able to match all kite donations to Entre Amigos.

kitesIf kites flying is not your passion, we also offer windsocks, banners, and flags. There is an existing inventory to choose from but we also have the ability to satisfy custom orders. We feel this product line enhances the faade of any home, especially in a beachfront community. It can announce to all that 'We am here'

We have lofty goals for the future of San Pancho Aire. With the growth of the company, we plan to expand our work force with local employees. The vision is to offer our merchandise to both residents and visitors all along the entire western coast of Mexico.  Realizing that that goal is more long term, we were happy to finally open our first store here in San Pancho on December 1st. Sharing space with Galeria Serendipity, we opened our doors on Tercer Mundo in the old museum building. We are open all week long, closed only on Mondays. Feel free to stop and say "hi" or check us out at www.sanpanchoaire.com. Come fly with us every Sunday on the beach.

New Restaurant Blue Pig

blue pigHigh up under the giant palapa on Tercer Mundo, blue lights shine on cheery oilcloth covered tables and the sound of the blues fills the air. The Blue Pig, San Pancho's newest eatery, is rocking out and open for business.

Greg Close, owner and head cook, is busy in the open kitchen, where painted orange flames by Jane Miller decorate the walls. Several local artists have pitched in on the decor, including Pam Parsons who designed the Razorback Jack logo, did the menus and flyers, and is Chief Floor Manager and One Busy Woman. Greg's sister, Candice Fulton, painted Delilah, the giant blue pig (and Razorback Jack's mama) who twirls beneath the palapa. Miguel Angel, local artist and sign painter, created the big readerboard and sandwich board out front and painted the motto over the door.

The smell of Greg's barbecue sauce fills the air, simmering on the big stove. "It's a 30-year-old secret recipe," he explains, "with over 50 ingredients. It takes 3 days to cook. I've tweaked it some over the last month, and now we have both the sweet original version and a picante version for people who like spicy."

The menu features meats slow-roasted for five hours--pork ribs, pulled pork, and chicken--also cheeseburgers, pulled pork sandwiches, potato salad and carrot slaw, and a selection of handmade desserts daily. Especially popular are The Big Pig and Delilah's Delight, platters big enough to share. Sandwich buns and the long fresh loaves for the garlic bread are delivered daily from Panino's bakery. DRAFT BEER by the pitcher or stein!! Modelo Especial and Negro Modelo on tap.

"I love San Pancho," Greg says. "I've always loved to cook for people and when this perfect restaurant location opened up, I decided it was time to do what I've always wanted to do."

blue pig employeesStaffed by an enthusiastic crew of local waiters and helpers, the restaurant is open daily except Wednesday from 3 to 10. There's live music every Saturday from 4 to 7, presently featuring Deep River, a band that Greg and Pam heard playing in Bucerias and decided they had to have. "The place was full last Saturday, our first music evening. It was a dream come true for me."

And the name, The Blue Pig? "I've been a bluesman all my life and I love barbecue, which to me means pork. I wanted to create a restaurant combining blues music and barbecued pork. It was only logical to call it The Blue Pig."

Arching over the double front door is the motto Come la vida como puerco. "Literally it means 'eat life like a pig'", Greg tells me. "It's our humorous way of saying, don't wait for tomorrow to enjoy life. Eat it now."

"Me encanta San Pancho", dice Greg.

Comer ahora ".

 Notes From The Ranch

I didn't realize just how many words had the letter "O" in them until my "O" key popped off the other day. It makes for slow typing. And I haven't even finished paying for the darned computer yet! Does anyone know of a good computer key store? Right...maybe some Gorilla Glue or duct tape. My dad used to call duct tape 100 mile an hour tape. It sticks on cars up to 100 miles an hour. My first car I pulled out of a field and rebuilt myself when I was 15. 1962 Chevy Nova. I paid the royal sum of 250 dollars for it. It took me a year of after school tinkering but finally it ran like a champ. It had a lot of body damage and I didn't know how to get the dents out so I just filled them with Bondo. Thus the car was named The James Bondo Special. I spray painted it eggplant purple. Not one of my more subtle stages. I loved that car! Now that I am married to a mechanic, I have "new to me" cars all of the time. Last week I briefly drove a 1972 Chevy Luv convertible pickup. Let me just state for the record that I am no longer 15 years old and I like cars with roofs. (Unless it comes with a Mercedes medallion on the front.) This week, a Dodge Durango. Next week, who knows!?! How did I get on the subject of cars? This, right here, people, is a brief glimpse into the complex mind of Tamara Bode. Imagine how loud it is in my head!
We are busy at Sazn. Thank you to all of you who have come in! I LOVE cooking for you and I hope it shows. I'm looking for Christmas cookie cutters now. I can't wait to frost the cookies! And most likely overdose on the frosting in the process. You can help by dropping by and peeling me off of the ceiling. Thank you for your cooperation.
Life is good, the weather is changing. No space heater in the bedroom yet. It seems warmer than last year at this time. And I swear I smelled Spring in the air yesterday.
Things I am thankful for: my personal mechanic, Enrique, fast cars and fun! If it is not fun, don't do it.
