New Restaurant Casa Emilia

casa emiliaWhite, pink and chocolate brown may be the colors of Neapolitan ice cream, but they are also the colors of Casa Emilia, a new bakery/cafe that recently opened in San Francisco, Nayarit.

The smell of fresh bread lingered in the air as I neared the corner to the cafe. Massimo, an Italian friend of mine (and nearly as picky of an eater as I am) was already nestled into a corner table, under the shade of an umbrella. I took one last deep breath of the smell of fresh bread, knowing I would soon grow accustomed to it. I took a seat opposite Massimo. A red shiny espresso machine was perched at the end of the dark wooden countertop.

Casa Emilia, located on the corner of Calle America Latina and Calle Chile, just opened on November 5th. In the three days since it opened, I have already visited twice.

"I am going to order something different today," Massimo told me. "Me too," I agreed.

On the opening day at Casa Emilia, both Massimo and I tried the chilaquiles verdes. Chilaquiles are totopos (tortilla chips) soaked in a mild sauce - either red or green - and then topped with cream and crumbly cheese, and served with beans. I usually add scrambled eggs to my order, for the extra protein.

Even though I was tempted to order the chilaquiles again, as they were the best I had ever eaten, I was craving something sweet and opted for the pancakes. Massimo chose the Omelette de flor de calabaza (zucchini flowers) and huitlacoche (corn truffle), with salsa verde and Chihuahua cheese - as recommended by the chef. We both ordered freshly squeezed orange juice.

pancakesThe blueberry pancakes that arrived were fluffy, and topped with a dollop of whip cream and raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries. Massimo's dish looked hearty.

28 year old Horacio "Lacho" Ruiz is the owner and head chef at Casa Emilia.  He was born in Puerto Vallarta but his grandmother Emilia raised him in the small coastal town of San Francisco. The bakery cafe is in fact a tribute to his abuela.

"While trying to come up with the cafe's logo, I thought about what my grandma loves to do best , dancing. The idea for the dolls in hot pink dresses actually came from a photo of my grandma performing in a similar costume."

"I know the photo. Doa Emilia showed it to me last year," I replied. "She even showed me her dress, the fuchsia one with colored ribbons. But why are there two dolls?"

"One is for my grandma and one is for my daughter - the two Emilias," Horacio told me proudly.

I was delighted at the thought of the two Emilia's dancing around in matching dresses.

Horacio continued, "When I was about seven years old, my grandma and I often baked corn bread together. The bakery is my way of paying homage to her." Horacio paused as if to give a silent thanks to his grandmother then went on,  "I asked her for some of her recipes. The first one that she gave me was for huevos con chorizo, the one she always makes for Luis Angel my nephew."

Besides being a tribute to the two Emilias, the cafe is also a collection of Horacio's culinary experiences.

"When I was 17, I got my first kitchen job. I was working as an assistant. But I didn't really like it, " Horacio grinned. "I didn't want to be just an assistant; I wanted to be the head chef. So, after that job I moved to Aspen Colorado. And during the four years that I spent there, I worked in a couple of really nice kitchens and gained a lot of experience."

When Horacio moved back to Mexico, he registered at the culinary Universidad Alica in Puerto Vallarta.  After four years of hard work, studying and apprenticing, Horacio graduated as a chef. He spent last year working at St. Regis, a luxury hotel in Punta de Mita. Although he liked the job, he longed to be closer to home. Even a couple of years ago, Horacio thought about opening up a restaurant in his hometown San Francisco. Now his dream is a reality.

Cooking must be approached with love, and here at Casa Emilia we cook with this magnificent ingredient.

Although the colors of Casa Emilia are the same as Neapolitan ice cream, there are no frosty deserts here - just good old fashioned home cooking. I asked Horacio why he chose to decorate Casa Emilia in pink, chocolate brown and white.

He repeated what his three old daughter Emmy had told him, "Papi, I know why you chose pink  because that's my favorite color. And you also picked brown because you drink so much coffee."

"And what about the white?" I inquired."Oh, that's my good part." Horacio explained, "my angelica side."

Casa Emilia is open from 7:00am to 3:00pm Monday to Saturday. (On Sundays they go fishing.) Evening hours are left open for catering private dinners. For more information call or email "Lacho" at:

Turtle Tracks

The arrival of cooler weather signals the end of the Olive Ridley Nesting  Season in San Pancho.  December is always the saddest month for Grupo Eco because as our volunteers return home we have to say a lot of tearful goodbyes to the good friends we have made and worked with all summer long.  As hard as that is to do, we can do it with a great feeling of accomplishment because 2011 has been an incredibly successful turtle season.  Despite the fact that we had fewer volunteers than prior years, we still managed to collect 942 nests- which is only 88 short of our all time record of 1,030 collected in 2008.  A big thank you to all our volunteers, supporters,  and the community of San Pancho for working hard to save these amazing animals.  It's a good feeling to know that because of the efforts of all of us- there are 65,000 more Olive Ridleys swimming in the sea this year.  Article by: Joslin Bertand

 Birding San Pancho with Luis

Partners in Flight Support San Pancho Bird Observatory

The following video reflects the need of doing land-bird habitat conservation along Western Mxico and specifically the potential for San Pancho. The video footage was recorded during a recent meeting a Western Working Group of the trinational organization

Partners in Flight in Mazatlan. I strongly believe that a project like this not only will help our community to develop educational opportunities for our local community, a broader appreciation for the natural environment but also to promote jobs related to ecotourism, scientific research and ultimately habitat conservation which is very much needed to guarantee the sustainability of our town. I hope you enjoy it and that this inspires you to support this new venture which I will keep you posted on. For more information please contact Luis Morales at [email protected]

San Pancho Bird Observatory Video

Gracias,

Luis

 Notes From The Ranch

Let the good times roll! Town is filling up and everyone is wearing a smile. And a jacket...the weather has decidedly taken a turn to the cold part of the thermometer. Out come the polar tech sheets (Super Mega) and the heavy curtains are back on the windows. Yes, I know it is all relative. Cold to me is 60 at night! I grew up in the frozen pacific north west so this is about as chilly as I want to be. I gave away my Sorrels years ago. But I do love cuddling up in a big warm sweater and socks at night. Maybe it is time to plug the space heater in. I know, I am a weather wimp. I know I've gone to the dark side when I start thinking of sweaters for my little Manchita. She's a dog, I am reminded by Enrique every morning when she tries her pitiful shaking from the cold routine. dog in sweaterWell, maybe just a vest...
Sazn is happening! Thank you to everyone that has stopped by and tasted my creations. Comfort food at its best. I made pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving thinking I would have one for the house. No such luck; they all sold and I had to make more! Do I love pumpkin pie for the flavor or the memories? I could eat it every day for breakfast. Good thing I don't.
fire in the kitchenAfter fixing the glitches in the kitchen, thinking gas leak, I am feeling much more secure. I had a little fire ball problem one day. No need to shave my legs for a couple of months now. Thanks to Chris King for being there to help figure things out. All I heard was a big WHOOSH...Ah,details...
If you are planning a trip to San Pancho soon, please consider packing jackets and coats for our little citizens. The morning walk to school can be chilly. And shoes, we are in desperate need of closed-toed shoes. Any kids size...you can drop them off with Maria in the Recycla Shop at Entre Amigos. They will be distributed without cost to the kids most in need.
This is the first holiday season without Ruth. I really miss her. Funny how grief sneaks up on me. But I will carry on in her tradition and make cookies. I have her Sugar cookie recipe and have been passing them out to the neighborhood kids.
I seem to have a couple of new dog friends at Sazn. My bad for feeding them but I can't tolerate hungry kids or dogs.
Life continues to unfold. I have never been happier and I feel so blessed. Thank you for your part in my life.
Things I am thankful for this week: soup in all forms, a good accountant and you, my friends.
Many, many blessings, Tamara

Me regal mi Sorrels aos. Nunca he sido ms feliz y me siento bendecido. Muchas bendiciones, Tamara
