Our weather here in San Pancho is starting to cool down and we are seeing old friends, new visitors and business's that are reopening, 
in anticipation of the new season.

 

This weekend, the La Patrona Polo Club will commence their new season, as they welcome visiting teams who will compete in the Premier de Copa. 

 

As we move around the pueblo, it is fun to see visitors and locals alike, feel the magic of San Pancho. 


I look forward to bringing you all the happenings in our community, and share with you, the joy of living in San Pancho.

San Pancho is celebrating another Mexican Holiday.

VIVA MEXICO!

The Day of the Revolution (in Spanish, "D�a de la Revoluci�n") is celebrated annually in Mexico on November 20. 

 

In 1910, there started the popular movement, which led to the overthrow of the dictator Jose de la Cruz Porfirio Diaz Mori and in 1917 after, 34 years of military rule, and over a decade of civil war, a public declaration announced the creation of the nation's new constitution and the ascension to the presidency of General Alvaro Obregon.

El D�a de la Revoluci�n se celebra anualmente en M�xico el 20 de noviembre. En 1910, el inicio del movimiento popular que llev� al derrocamiento del dictador Jos� de laCruz Porfirio D�az Mori. Despu�s de 34a�os de r�gimen militar, m�s de una d�cada de guerra civil que en �ltima instancia condujo a la promulgaci�n de la constituci�n de la naci�n en 1917 y 1920 la ascensi�n a la presidencia del general Alvaro Obreg�n.

La Patrona
For a moment, become a Persian Jockey, with complete control over an animal and the glory of winning the victory. This is the challenge of Polo. Teamwork, coordination of movement and strength are essential to the practice of this sport, although it has definite origin, dating back to Persia in the 6th century before Christ.

 

Teams of four players, all on horseback, with mallets,(which is called a Taco), try to pass a plastic ball (formerly wooden) between two posts, in one of two ends of the field, scoring a goal.

Polo demands maximum physical ability by players who practice it, because it requires domination of the horse to move the ball in the desired direction, and achieve the correct position to score a goal.

 

There are few who have dedicated themselves to the sport of Polo, but we can say that many of the South American countries have dominated the sport. Chile is the current world champion, but others follow in Asia and Europe.

 

The majority of the excercise  occurs in the hips, legs and arms as the player raises and makes contact with the ball. Another benefit is the liberating feeling generated by being on the field, on horseback, to meet the desire for mastery for all men in search of victory.

 

Polo is a demanding sport, a challenge for coordination, reflexes and strength.

 

Come watch Polo at La Patrona Polo Club on November 20 for the Primera Copa, an inter-club tournament. Starting on Saturday at 5pm and concluding with an awards ceremony the following day,Sunday at 9pm.The competition will feature the best players from 4 different teams including La Patrona Polo's own.

Convertirse por un momento, en un jinete persa, el dominio total sobre un animal y la gloria de conquistar la victoria. Ese es el reto del polo.Trabajo en equipo,  coordinaci�n del movimiento y la fuerza son elementos indespensables  para la pr�ctica de este deporte,  aunque no tiene un origen definido, una de las mas antiquas referencias esta en Persia en el siglo VI antes de Cristo.

 

Equipos conformados por cuatro jugadores, todos en el lomo de un caballoa con un baston en la mano (que recibe el nombre deTaco), tratan de hacer pasar una pelota de pl�stico (anteriormente de madera) entre dos postes, por una meta marcada en uno de los dos extremos del campo, para conseguir una anotacion.

  

El polo demanda el fisico al m�ximo a los jugadores que lo practican, pues se requiere del maximo dominio de los caballos para poder avanzar la pelota en la direccion deseada, ademas de lograr la posicion correcta para conseguir la anotacion. 

  

Son pocas las personas que se han dedicado a la practica de este deporte y, aunque, se puede decir que el domini pleno en los ultimos anos es para los paises sudamericanos-Chile es el actual campe�n del mundo, en otros Continentes como Asia y Europa.

 

El mayor ejercicio se da en la cadera,piernas y brazos ; pues el jugador,antes de realizar un golpe se levanta apoyado en los estribos del caballo y despues hace fuerza para golpear con el taco la pelota. Otra de los beneficios es la sensacion de libertad que genera estar sobre el campo en el lomo de un caballo cumpliendo el deseo de dominio de todos los hombres en busca de la victoria. El Polo, una disciplina demandante, un reto a la coordinacion, los reflejos y la fuerza.

  

Ven a ver a La Patrona Polo Polo Club el 20 de noviembre para la Copa de Primera, un torneo entre clubes. A partir del s�bado a las 17:00 y concluyendo con una ceremonia de premios el d�a siguiente a la competencia 9pm.The contar� conlos mejores jugadores de cuatro equipos diferentes, incluyendo La Patrona Polo propia.

San Pancho Garden

  

  

First, I would like to thank all of you for making it possible for us to create beauty, food and soil. It was truly a wonderful experience and very rewarding. Whoever is interested in continuing our efforts in growing a garden has a great start. There are friendly neighbors who will gladly help, and a garden that has been established. We placed the garden where the beds allow the drainage to flow back in to the river. It is a fertile piece of land, protected with a fence around it. There is water, hoses and tools, seed flats and an abundant amount of compost already made. There is more than one garden; in fact, there are several fenced gardens, and others that are along pathways with dug beds and amended soils. We would welcome any of the members of the community to take up the activity where we left it.

Most, if not all, beds were productive and provided food, flowers and herbs, and then were interplanted with a bean crop of several varieties to produce seed and stabilize the beds with their roots, as well as cover the beds with foliage to create a cover when the rains came.  We understand this was successful; that is, the garden is still there and continued to grow and produce food, was protected from the rain, and drained as well as produced seed. Our last communication in August/September, we heard that the garden was a jungle. We can only imagine the growth and abundance that remains.

Some suggestions for the future are as follows. See if you can find the beds and paths and begin to work where the garden allows you to start. Collect seed if there is any and keep it dry and in paper bags or glass jars in a ventilated room. Begin cutting down all the dead growth and clear an area, one at a time, until you can distinguish where the paths and the beds are. Cutting the weeds dry stocks will not disturb the beds, rather than digging out the roots, although in some cases you may have to.

Make a compost pile with all the roughage you take from the garden, or put it into existing compost. Once this is done, you will have reclaimed the garden and the space. This will take some effort, but within a few days, maybe a week, you will see the foundation of our work last year. There may be a lot of young growth intermittent with dead stalks. These could be weeds or last year's crops gone to seed. Don't just assume everything is to be composted. If the seedlings have sprouted, then you are well on your way to having a productive, diversified garden. Taking pictures and sending them to us will help if you need to identify what is there or to just keep us informed.

Let's say there is a lot of green undergrowth and it looks like greens; ie, lettuce, spinach, chard, kale and so on. Then you are already there and need only to cut, thin and harvest and clear any weeds to make space. Also, you may find the pathways are covered with growth and also could be food or flowers, etc. We will see together...all in all, it's a good fantasy! If, on the other hand, when you clear the garden beds, everything  is thick stalks and grasses and stickers, then cutting is the best first step.

butterflyClear out the stalks, dig out the roots and grasses and bad weeds that have thorns, and then we will assess the next step. Maybe digging is needed to turn in the growth in the beds and skimming in the path to remove the weeds.  Possibly just skimming the beds will be the right action, and then top dressing with sifted compost; that is, digging into a finished compost pile or using compost that has been stockpiled along the fence. At any rate, sifting it through a screen and adding a four inch layer to the top of the bed and turning it into the top six inches and raising the bed would do it. Presto: ready for seeds or plants.

This is so interesting...you see we are preparing for winter and extending the growing season under hoop houses and cold frames , and thinking about  planning and designing for next spring --where you are beginning your spring season of growth in the garden now!

En primer lugar, me gustar�a agradecer a todos ustedes por hacer posible que podamos para crear belleza, alimentos y suelo. 
Realmente fue una experiencia maravillosa y muy gratificante. Quien est� interesado en continuar con nuestros esfuerzos en el cultivo de un jard�n que tiene un gran comienzo. No son vecinos amistosos que estar� encantado de ayudar, y un jard�n que se ha establecido. Hemos puesto el jard�n, donde las camas permiten el drenaje vuelva a fluir en el r�o. Es un pedazo de tierra f�rtil, protegido con una valle alrededor de �l.No hay agua, mangueras y herramientas, pisos de la semilla y una abundante cantidad de compost ya hecho. No es m�s que un jard�n, de hecho, hay varios jardines cercados, y otros que est�n a lo largo de las v�as con dos camas y el suelo excavado modificado. Damos la bienvenida a cualquiera de los miembros de la comunidad para iniciar las actividades donde lo dejamos.

La mayor�a, si no todas, las camas eran productivos y proporcionan alimentos, flores y hierbas, y luego se intercalaron con una cosecha de frijoles de diferentes variedades para producir semilla y estabilizar las camas con sus ra�ces, as� como cubrir las camas con follaje para crear uncubierta cuando llegaron las lluvias. Entendemos que esto fue un �xito, es decir, el jard�n est� todav�a all� y sigui� creciendo y la producci�n de alimentos, fue protegido de la lluvia y drenaje, como las semillas y producido. Nuestra �ltima comunicaci�n en agosto / septiembre, nos enteramos de que el jard�n era una selva. S�lo podemos imaginar el crecimiento y la abundancia de lo que queda.

Algunas sugerencias para el futuro son los siguientes. Vea si usted puede encontrar las camas y las rutas y comenzar a trabajar en el jard�n le permite iniciar. Recoger la semilla si hay alguna y que no se moje y en bolsas de papel o botes de cristal en una habitaci�n ventilada. Comience a cortar hacia abajo todo el crecimiento muertos y limpiar una zona, uno a la vez, hasta que se puede distinguir donde los caminos y las camas son. Corte de las poblaciones de malas hierbas secas no moleste a las camas, en lugar de la excavaci�n de las ra�ces, aunque en algunos casos es posible que tenga que hacerlo.

Hacer una pila de compost con todo el forraje que tomar desde el jard�n, o poner en compost existentes. Una vez hecho esto, se han recuperado el jard�n y el espacio. Esto tomar� un poco de esfuerzo, pero a los pocos d�as, tal vez a la semana, podr�s ver el fundamento de nuestro trabajo el a�o pasado. Puede haber una gran cantidad de �rboles j�venes intermitente con tallos muertos. Estos pueden ser malezas o cultivos el a�o pasado se ha ido a la semilla. No asuma que todo est� para ser compostados. Si las semillas han germinado, entonces usted est� bien en su manera de tener un jard�n productivo, diversificado. C�mo tomar fotograf�as y enviarlas a nosotros ayudar si es necesario para identificar lo que est� all� o s�lo para mantener informados.

Digamos que hay una gran cantidad de maleza verde y parece que los verdes, es decir, la lechuga, las espinacas, las acelgas, la col rizada y as� sucesivamente. A continuaci�n, ya est�n ah� y s�lo tiene que cortar, y la cosecha fina y clara de las malezas para hacer espacio. Tambi�n, usted puede encontrar los caminos est�n cubiertos con el crecimiento y podr�a ser tambi�n alimentos o flores, etc Vamos a ver juntos ... en definitiva, se trata de una buena fantas�a! Si, por el contrario, cuando se borran las camas del jard�n, todo est� tallos gruesos y las hierbas y pegatinas, cortar, es el mejor primer paso.

 Limpiar los tallos, desenterrar las ra�ces y las hierbas y malas hierbas que tienen espinas, y luego vamos a evaluar el siguiente paso. Tal vez la excavaci�n que se necesita para convertir el crecimiento en las camas y rozando en el camino para eliminar las malas hierbas. Posiblemente, s�lo rozando las camas ser� la acci�n correcta, y recebo con compost cernido, es decir, la excavaci�n en una pila de compost terminado o el uso de compost que se ha acumulado a lo largo de la valla. En cualquier caso, el tamizado a trav�s de una pantalla y la adici�n de una capa de cuatro pulgadas en la parte superior de la cama y convertirla en la parte superior de seis pulgadas y el aumento de la cama, lo har�a. Presto: listo para semillas o plantas.

Esto es muy interesante ... se ve que se est�n preparando para el invierno y extender el per�odo de crecimiento bajo las casas del aro y los marcos de fr�o, y pensando en la planificaci�n y dise�o para la pr�xima primavera - en la que est� comenzando su temporada de primavera de crecimiento en el jard�n ahora !

Welcome back to those of you who have been away for the summer. 

 

We have begun our 3rd season of Spanish classes in San Pancho with Level 1 November 7th and Level 2 November 8th.  Our next session of Level 1 will begin on Monday, November 28th and Level 2 on Tuesday, November 29th.  Our Levels 3 and 4 will be taught in January.

 

Classes are three days a week from 9-12 for 2 1/2 weeks.

 

We use the fun and famous Warren Hardy method and curriculum.

 

In Level 1 you will learn six power verbs and how to use them in sentences and questions to help you achieve your needs and desires.

 Birding San Pancho with Luis

 

 

A life-lasting lesson from a juvenile American Kestrel.

We often say Mother Nature is wise in the ways it manifests, however, not every day we have the opportunity to get a lesson for ourselves or we failed to assimilate. 

A few days ago, as I was leading the first tour of the 2011-2012 birding season in San Pancho I noticed since we were having breakfast by the river under the large Parota tree where we normally spot great birds such as Pale-billed Woodpeckers, Orange-fronted Parakeets, Grey Hawks, Painted Buntings, Blue Buntings just to name a few; we saw a juvenile American Kestrel which is a common migratory prey bird in this area I mention.

 Well, we continued seeing the juvenile Kestrel all along the tour literally fighting for its food as it chased away Yellow-winged Caciques, Thick-billed Kingbirds and Magpie Jays that are not the type of prey Kestrels normally get, chasing Mexican Parrotlets which are too fast and  elusive for a falcon and I could go on and on describing what I recalled as a "juvenile behavior".

kestrelI mention to my very friendly guests from Quebec, Michele and Louis, that this was not the typical hunting behavior of an adult Kestrel, who normally prefer waiting still for their prey on perches.

Later that day taking to friends I realized (assimilated) the great lesson nature taught me: as I normally go through life engaging in various endeavors, it is likely that I will get in trouble or at least spend my energy trying to make a living. While, like the adult American Kestrel I could wait still for the right opportunity in life that will not spend by energy budget but rather will translate into a substantial and conscious hunt.

Una lecci�n de vida por parte de un Cernicalo Americano juvenil.

A menudo decimos quela madre naturalezaes sabia enlas formas en quese manifiesta, sin embargo, no todos los d�as tenemosla oportunidad de obteneruna lecci�n para nosotros mismos oal menos de asimilarla.  Hace unos d�as, cuando estaba liderando elprimer recorridode la temporada de observaci�n  de aves 2011-2012 en San Pancho me di cuentamientras est�bamos desayunando junto al r�obajo elgran �rbol de Parota donde normalmente observamos avescomo el Carpinero Pico de plata, Periquitos Frente Naranja, Aguilillas grises, Colorines Siete colores o azuless�lo para nombrar algunas aves,vimosa un juvenil de Cern�calo Americano, que es un ave de presa migratoriaco m�nen esta zonaque menciono.    

Bueno,seguimos viendo el Cern�calo juvenila lo largo del recorridoliteralmente luchandopor su comida ya que molestaba a Calandrias, Tiranosde pico grueso y Urracas Hermosas 

Carinegras los cuales no son el tipo depresacom�n para un Cernicalo; tambi�n persegu�a Cotorritas mexicanas que son demasiador�pidas y dif�ciles de alcanzar para un halc�n, y as� podr�a seguir y seguir describiendolo que yo percib�como un "comportamiento juvenil". 

Les mencion� amis amables hu�spedes provenientes de Quebec, Micheley Louis, que esteno era el comportamiento de cazat�pico de uncern�caloadulto,que normalmente prefier en esperarquietos a sus presasenperchas.  Ese mismo d�a, platicado con amigos que me di cuenta(asimile) la gran lecci�n que la naturaleza meense��:a veces voy por la vida participando endiversos esfuerzos, es probable queme meta en problemaso al menosgaste mienerg�a en tratar deganarme la vida. Mientras que, como el cern�calo adulto podr�a esperar toda v�ala oportunidad adecuada en la vida sin gastar todo mi pre su puesto energ�tico, sino m�s bien se traducirlo en una cacer�a su stanciosa y consciente. �Gracias por esa gran lecci�n!

 Notes From The Ranch  


Life is good! We are busy with the hens and assorted animals. We greet the day to the hens sitting on the front porch now. Manchita still thinks they taste best fresh but she is learning to not eat them. I'm sure my neighbors are tired of hearing me yell at her every morning! She is cute but a bit slow. You would think either she or I would figure out another way, but maybe we are both cute but slow.
SazonSaz�n de Tamara is open! I am so excited to be cooking again! A big leap from Farmers Market to Saz�n! Last Saturday was our first trial run and I learned what works and what I needed to change. I like having a fresh menu every day. And soups, ah, soups. Saturday was Curry Cream of Cauliflower with fresh ginger. One of my all time favorites. Yesterday was Beef, vegetable, lentil. Today,�quien sabe?
Town activity is picking up and more new faces are here every day. Welcome! I am ready for Friday Art Walk....so much to see and do and music to listen to.Speaking of music, I just heard from Jeff Oster, trumpeter extraordinaire, and he is planning on being here for the San Pancho Music Festival the end of February! If you've not heard his magic, treat yourself to one of his CD's. He performed for the NPR show ECHOS the other night and through the magic of internet, I spent a beautiful 2 hours revelling in his music. 
I like seeing more and more people on bikes and skate boards. Let's all slow down a bit and give them lots of space in the streets. I'm looking for someone to do food deliveries on bike for Saz�n. Anyone interested? Free food....
I just finished a book by Barbara Kingsolver, The Lacuna, and it was amazing. One phrase stood out for me and I am adopting it. "Make do with nothing new". A common phrase at the end of World War 2. Grab a copy if you can. 
Life goes on, things change and things stay the same. I'm still and happy in the midst of it all. 
Things I am thankful for: girlfriends,coffee and my mutts.

La vida es buena! Estamos ocupados con las gallinas y animales diversos. Saludamos el d�a de las gallinas sentadoen el porche delantero ahora. Manchita todav�a piensa que el mejor sabor fresco, pero est� aprendiendo a no comer. Ella es linda, pero un poco lento. Se podr�a pensar que ella o yo imaginar de otra manera, pero tal vez son lindos, pero lento.
Saz�n de Tamara est� abierto! Estoy tan emocionada de estar cocinando otra vez! Un gran salto de mercado de los granjerosde Saz�n! El s�bado pasado fue nuestro periodo de pruebaprimero y he aprendido lo que funciona y lo que ten�a quecambiar. Me gusta tener un men� fresco todos los d�as. Y las sopas, ah, sopas. El s�bado fue Curry Crema de coliflor con jengibre fresco. Uno de mis favoritos de todos los tiempos. Ayer fue carne de res, verduras, lentejas. Hoy en d�a, qui�n sabe?
La actividad de la ciudad se est� acelerando y m�s caras nuevas est�n aqu� todos los d�as. Bienvenido! Estoy listo para el viernes Paseo del Arte .... tantas cosas que ver y hacer, ym�sica para escuchar to.Speaking de la m�sica, me acaba deJeff Oster, trompetista extraordinario, y �l est� pensando enestar aqu� para el Festival de M�sica de San Pancho a finales de febrero! Si usted no ha o�do hablar de su magia, disfrutar deuna de la de su CD. Actu� para el programa de NPR ECHOSla otra noche y por la magia de internet, pas� una hermosa dos horas disfrutando de su m�sica.
Me gusta ver a la gente cada vez m�s en bicicletas y tablas de skate. Vamos todos a frenar un poco y darles un mont�n de espacio en las calles. Estoy buscando a alguien para hacer las entregas de alimentos en bici para Saz�n. Cualquier persona interesada? Comida gratis ....
Acabo de terminar un libro de Barbara Kingsolver, la laguna, y fue incre�ble. Una frase se destac� para m� y lo estoyadoptando. "Hacer ver con nada nuevo". Una frase com�n al final de la 2 � Guerra Mundial. Agarra una copia si es posible.
La vida sigue, las cosas cambian y las cosas siguen igual.Estoy tranquilo y feliz en medio de todo esto.

Turtle Tracks

While the number of nesting turtles is slowing down with the arrival of the cooler weather, we are still up to our elbows in newborn hatchlings every night! The nests collected early last month are hatching with great success and we are releasing hundreds --- sometimes thousands--- of turtles every evening.  If you haven't experienced a sunset hatchling release yet, it is a San Pancho experience you don't want to miss!
Hatchling releases are at 6:30 every evening at the following locations:

 

Monday- In front of the Malecon (downtown)
Tuesday-In front of the Beach Nursery
Wednesday-In front of Costa Azul Hotel
Thursday-Far north end of the beach by the rocks
Friday- In front of the Malecon (downtown)
Saturday-In front of Costa Azul Hotel
Sunday- In front of the Beach Nursery

Public releases are always free. 
We also have hatchlings available for private releases, weddings and family reunions.
