Hola,
Fall is upon us and so is Halloween and Day of the Dead.
Goblins were out after dark on October 31. A parade of trick or treaters were seen on Tercer Mundo with bags of candy.
Day of the Dead focuses on gatherings of family and friends. They pray for and remember friends and family members who have died.
The National Holiday takes place on November 1st and 2nd, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2). Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts.
The Day is not for sorrow, but for remembering and respecting the departed.
I look forward to bringing you all the happenings in our community, and share with you, the joy of living in San Pancho.

Day of the Dead

The Day of the Dead is my favorite holiday. Some like Christmas, others Thanksgiving.
Lately, I've heard a lot of people in the states saying they like Halloween best of all. Curious. I think that if you could mix the family time of Christmas and Thanksgiving with the picnics of Fourth of July, stir in the underlying theme of Memorial Day and top it with a sprinkling of the most playful elements of Halloween, we still wouldn't even be close to understanding Day of the Dead - Dia de los Muertos.
North America and Mexican cultures are very different when it comes to death. In the United States we mostly view death as an end, a precipice once passed, from which we will never return. It's a hard line, we are alive or we are dead. Despite most of us believing in one type of afterlife or another we still fear death.
In Mexico my understanding is that the line between life and death is more like a very thin membrane and on Dia de los muertos the membrane is permeable. Rituals and traditions coax the dead loved ones through the membrane for a visit. It is a chance for the dead to recharge themselves with love and celebration and the sustenance presented for them by their living friends and family. The living through regularly revisiting the memories of their dead keep those people close to their hearts. I see the playful animations of skeletons as Catrinas, sugar skulls or pan de muertos as a way of poking fun at death. A way of acknowledging that death exists but it is not to be feared.
I've had the absolute good fortune to spend the past two years in Patzcuaro for Dia de los Muertos ( and Noche de los Muertos since the celebrations run all November 1st night) I visited graveyard after graveyard seeing the finest manifestation of family, community and celebration that one could hope to witness. It's so difficult to explain a life changing experience. I now create my own alters, encouraging my mother, my father and brother to visit me on this night and day. I miss them dearly, so I am grateful to Mexican culture for teaching us how to still be close.
I am very proud to have contributed to the making of this video for Safe Crossings, a nonprofit in Seattle that offers free grief counseling to children. It tells the story of Dia de los Muertos beautifully.

 He tenido la fortuna de absoluta buena para disfrutar de los últimos dos años en Pátzcuaro para el Día de los Muertos (y Noche de los Muertos desde la celebración corre toda la noche 01 de noviembre). Visité panteon tras panteon después de ver las mejores manifestaciones de la familia, la comunidad y la celebración que se podía esperar de los testigos. Es tan difícil de explicar, pero que cambia la vida para experimentar. Ahora creo mi propia altares, alentando a mi madre, mi padre y mi hermano a visitarme en este día y la noche. Los extraño muchísimo, así que estoy agradecido a la cultura mexicana por enseñarnos a ser todavía cerca.

caretaker, and this is his story about San Pancho turtles.
You started a turtle nursery?
Yes. Once we became legal, we built an official beach nursery, first in front of the Costa Azul Hotel and then later relocated it a little farther down the beach, to where it is now. We had bi-lingual educational
materials explaining a sea turtle's life cycle and the reasons they needed protection.
Did you also have an indoor nursery?

No. The marine biologists who were advising us told us we should always attempt to replicate nature. Temperature and moisture are important factors in the maturing of sea turtle eggs. A two-degree temperature difference in the final trimester of incubation determines the hatchling's sex. These are factors that
cannot be properly controlled
[in an indoor nursery].
Did you involve tourists in their release?
Not a lot. Hatchlings are born with a 24-hour energy reserve. This allows them to make their dash to the sea and then swim far from shore, where most of their predators are. If they are held too long, for a public showing, they will lose this energy and are pretty much sacrificed. It's acceptable to sacrifice two or three hatchlings for public education, but not entire nests.
The Turtle Camp at Nuevo Vallarta has become a pretty big and impressive operation. Was the Grupo involved in starting that as well?

Yes. In 1993, we heard about the large number of nests that were being laid - and poached - there, so we began transporting hundreds of nests from Nuevo Vallarta beaches back to our nursery on San Pancho's beach. We negotiated with the federal agencies and the large hotels in Nuevo Vallarta and were donated a location to set up a
formal Sea Turtle
Restoration camp there.
The hotels donated water and electricity and in 1994, together with some CCF [Coastal Conservation Foundation] students from the University of Arizona who we had invited down to work with us, we set up the camp. We even partially restored old ruins around the site and the children of San Pancho came and painted murals of sea life on them. CCF brought down three large Vietnam-era tents, which we set up and used as male and female dorms as well as a kitchen/library at the camp. The CCF students, almost all studying marine biology (two were finishing their doctorates in sea turtles), received credits toward their degrees for their work with us. One of the two doctorate students, Jeff Seminoff, went on to serve a term as President of the International Sea Turtle Association.

And that first, rudimentary camp grew into what is a hugely popular tourist attraction in Nuevo Vallarta today. Is the Grupo still involved with it?
Well, it was so successful that different political departments wanted to get involved and take credit for it. The CCF students were about to graduate, and we were busy with our projects in
San Pancho, so we handed over
control.
Today the Nuevo Vallarta program has doubled its camps and is run by the University of Guadalajara, and continues to be one of the most successful and renowned sea turtle programs in the country.

When did you leave your work with the turtles?
In 1995, we helped the CCF set up a general biological census study of a beach called Playa Punta Raza, 10 miles north of San Pancho. That was their final year there, and the final year for me, my brothers Nemo and Lavo, Jesse, Judith, and Javier.
In 1996, Frank Smith was elected president of the Grupo
and we all went on to other things.
Frank, as Director, continues his work with the very successful Grupo Ecologico de la Costa Verde in San Pancho today.
Well, without you and those original volunteers who cared enough about the survival of the sea turtles, San Pancho - and the entire coast of Riviera Nayarit - wouldn't have one of the most impressive turtle rebounds in the world. Do you miss it?

Yes, I miss working with the turtles, but I am happy that people now understand how important it is to protect them. Slowly, we changed the minds of the people living here.

¿Se involucran los turistas en su liberación?
 No mucho. Las crías nacen con una reserva de energía de 24 horas. Esto permite llevar a cabo su carrera hacia el mar y luego nadar lejos de la costa, donde la mayoría de sus depredadores. Si se mantienen demasiado tiempo, para una exhibición pública, van a perder esta energía y se sacrifican más o menos. Es aceptable sacrificar dos o tres crías de la educación pública, pero no toda nidos.

Sí. Hoy en día el programa de Nuevo Vallarta se ha duplicado sus campos y está dirigido por la Universidad de Guadalajara, y sigue siendo uno de los programas de tortugas más éxito y reconocimiento en el mar en el país.
¿Cuándo salió de su trabajo con las tortugas?

Notes From The Ranch

 Woohooo! I just finished my morning beach walk with the mutts and now it is time to shower, shampoo and shine. We have electricity in Sazón de Tamara! I am cleaning and polishing and stocking the shelves with goodies. I'm so excited to be in the restaurant "business" again!
I've missed it.
I'll start out with my salsas, pestos, cheeses and spices. And a roasted chicken or two. Green salads, pasta, I'm in heaven thinking of all of the things I can cook for you. And I'll have a few bottles of wine and imported beers for sale, too.
Estimated Time of Opening is looking like next week. Stop by and see me, please!
At the ranch, I've started planting kitchen herbs. I found some great herbs at the Thursday Market in La Peñita. Mmm, lemon basil.
The chickens are laying lots of eggs so I have organic eggs to cook with. I still can't force myself to look at the girls as potential food sources. Soft heart, empty soup pot.
If I knew how to cook iguana I would have a fine specimien in with the chickens. It must be well over a meter and a half long. No, I won't cook it although I have had iguana before in Las Lomas. Not my favorite.
People are arriving and the town is looking clean and fresh. I'm excited to see all of your smiling faces. Please remember to drive slowly in the village, we have an abundance of skateboarders and bikers.
Things I am thankful for this week: the time change, so nice to have light in the morning, getting my groove back on, and laughing and kissing at the same time.
