July 15, 2011
Hola to our 740 La Voz Newsletter readers in San Pancho and around the world.
The town is definitely slow this time of year, but there is still a lot going on with entreAmigos summer workshops, an going effort to clean up San Pancho and keep our town looking great. Enjoy the summer, the heat, the refreshing rains. Take time out to relax! For current weather conditions you can follow Sanpanchoweather.com. Here is a great blog about July conditions.
San Pancho was in the news: San Pancho Top Hideaway Vacation Destination on Mexican Riviera Nayarit. A great article!
Chris Parsons of Light Style Photography got a great shot of the SW swell on July 10th which brought in some solid double overhead walls. Not too crowded and the clouds kept the day cool. A fun day...

Get Ready for a SUPER CLEAN SAN PANCHO!
| By Nicole Swedlow
If you are in San Pancho you are likely to see a large group of people picking up trash, cleaning the rivers, beaches, estuary and the town in general. These people are 4 0 residents that were hired as temporary workers as part of a government grant that is provided by the SEMARNAT for San Pancho. This grant is solicited by the organizations of entreAmigos and Alianza Jaguar and given as a recognition for the recycling program. The 40 workers will clean all the federal zones, the town in general and then will do service projects to finish construction in the elementary school and other public spaces over the course of the next month. entreAmigos administers the program, if you have suggestions for projects, questions or concerns please contact them.

San Pancho Child Selected for Reality Television Show
| By Nicole Swedlow
Local San Pancho resident, 11 year old Nicte Priego was selected to star in one segment of a reality television show. The reality show, called "La LLeva" follows kids from different cultures and customs as they visit a new place and learn about it from their child host. This weekend film crews will follow Nicte through San Pancho as she shows what life is like here. The show already has had great success in Latin America and will be filming 6 segments in Mexico. A huge thank you to Mexicosta.com for hosting the casting and film crew and Costa Azul Hotel for hosting the film crew! |

Notes from the Ranch
|
Where do the days go? I was up at 5:30 am today, had breakfast done by 6:30 am and started feeding animals. Gym time. A "quick" trip to Nuevo Vallarta for Kar to register for the University, then back. I made sandwiches for us, then we started on the screens for the windows. The next time I look up I am late for a 4:00 pm appointment! Make a call to push it back a half an hour, in the shower and out the door. 7:00 pm before I am home again. Dinner to be prepared, laundry to take off of the line and fold. Animals fed and watered for the last time today, 3rd shower. I am just now sitting down to write my column.
I was going to write about how much slower summer is for me. But then I realized that it is not much different from the rest of the year! Sure, I don't have many crops to weed and harvest but the hens keep laying, the dogs still want food, errands need to be ran. How in the world am I going to fit gym time and a new business into this schedule?!? I need to lean how to delegate.

The rains have been great but with the pouring we had last summer, there is not much top soil left in the jungle so plants, trees and rocks are more exposed with nothing to hold them in place. We've had slides on Carretera 200 already. Trees, big trees, coming down, root balls exposed.
Friends and family call asking if we feel "safe" here. I feel safer here than in the states!
More next week. Life is good, fast paced and filled with JOY!

Things I am thankful for: cold showers, ceiling fans, floor fans, driving around in my car for the A/C and dips in the ocean.
Blessings, Tamara

An Overview of the Birding Season 2010-2011
|
This morning as I went birding to the estuary, which by the way opened last weekend after a heavy rain combined with a strong swell leaving the beach full of water-hyacinths (and sadly some trash) besides happy surfers with the perfect break that the newly opened estuary usually brings, I realized that the birding season 2010-2011 could be considered as "over". What do I mean with this? :
Biologically there are two very evident aspects:
1) Most tropical species like the Black-throated Magpie Jays, Rufous-bellied Chachalacas, Orange-fronted Parakeets. Elegant and Citroline Trogons and even the migratory species Black-bellied Whistling Ducks have started a new cycle with the birth of their offspring. By now all of the tropical species are experiencing the challenge of survival of hatchlings; some have fledged already and display their immature/juvenile plumages.
2) Most migratory species have fledged, leaving only the resident or as we call "tropical" species with the exception of a few summer migrants such as Blue-black Grassquits and Sulphur-bellied Flycatchers and some late Laughing and Hermanns Gulls.
Socially and economically it means there are not many more tours since there are few tourists and the rains, humidity, heat and BUGS!!!!, make birding and other outdoor activities more challenging and sometimes just impossible.
So, just like the birds do, this is the time for locals to develop new plumages, to re-shape and remodel our nests (perhaps by repairing leaking roofs or adding some paint here and there) and to prepare our babies (new projects) for survival in the next birding season.
Enjoy the summer, either if you are here in San Pancho or somewhere else; please remember to join Birding San Pancho or the San Pancho Birding Club in your next visit to the Nayarit Coast or Puerto Vallarta area. Our team will have new members, partners, projects, tours and much more fun and natural beauty to share with all of you!
Dont miss the next issue of La Voz San Pancho Newsletter, I`m planning to share with you a report of the species registered during the 2010-2011 season.
