Dental Hygiene Field School in San Pancho
|
By Glades HuizarThe Dental Program from British Columbia Canada has been coming to San Pancho for the past 5 years, offering services (dental hygiene) and education to families and schools. They are graduating students who are in Field Study and are guided by their instructors - the collaboration with Dentists (hospital and private) plus with the community leaders and educators at all the schools in town is important in improving dental health for our families. The photos highlight the Kindergarten Visit but they were at all schools in town, including Escuela del MUndo plus clinics at the hospital and entreAmigos. They served easily over 300 people either at the school screenings and the clinic visits. Thank you to Camosun College (Canada) , instructor Ada Barker and her students for a wonderful visit and their hard work! We look forward to their visit next year! Blog: CC Dental Hygiene Field School in Mexico Post: ...@ jardin de los ninos To view additional pictures from the Field School visit: Link: http://ccdhmexicofieldschool.blogspot.com/2011/05/jardin-de-los-ninos.html In the kindergarten school, we attended both sessions. We were there at 9am and 2pm to see a total of 34 4 and 5 year old children. What a lovely day that was!!! The students wanted to stay longer and play.
Glades was our presenter/interpreter that morning.
Like most public schools in Mexico, the children wear uniform.
We asked, "Who could open their mouth as wide as possible?"
After we gave each child a toothbrush, we showed them how to brush their teeth, and they showed us how to do it. We were bonding big time!
After the presentation, we took them to the classroom next door to perform the screening and fluoride application.
One of the few kids who had no decay in this class!
Krista and her little girl, waiting for Glades to write a special note in Spanish on her screening form. We also gave each child a balloon after the screening.
This little boy showing Shannon quite seriously how he brushes the inside of his front teeth.
We were all smiles all day! Who wouldn't be...with these children? Sadly, this population group showed the highest decay rate of all the schools we visited. Although, we feel that our field school is making a positive impact with our visits to the schools for the last 5 years, seeing this amount of decay rate at this age level was a clear indication that more education needs to occur with the parents and families directly.
At the end of our morning session!
At the end of our 2pm session and another productive day. |

Bucerias Wind Festival 2011 Photos!
|
Article & Photos by Chris Parsons
Wind Festival 2011 was held in Bucerias May 20-22. It was a 3 day kitesurfing competition that attracted nearly 150 kitesurfers including champions from the US and Mexico. The sky was filled with colorful kites as they raced across Banderas Bay Saturday afternoon. A beautiful sight. The remainder of the event was action packed with the freestyle competition Saturday and Sunday. Some remarkable athletes were performing their best stunts for the judges and the large crowd in attendance. If you'd like to see more photos from the competition, here's how: - select this link: LightStyle Photography - select the gallery WIND FESTIVAL 2011 Enjoy!

Notes from the Ranch

Notes From the Ranch
How long does it take for you to wake up in the morning? I mean the stage from groggy bedhead to champion breakfast short order cook. The groggy bedhead look used to be so darned cute on me. Now I look like my face needs a good ironing and Medusa ain't got nothing on my morning hair.
Today was one of the slow movement mornings. Enrique was up, showered and had coffee going before I even cracked one eye open and groaned. Where did the night go and how did it get to be morning without someone warning me?!?
He laughed at me, he swears it is WITH me, and handed me a cup of coffee. Ah, sweet elixir of life. I stumbled through the pack of dogs wagging their morning greetings. (Dog language for FEED ME), tried to ignore the rooster on the wall by the back porch and sucked down the coffee. Telly Savalas, our rooster, has learned to wait with all of the other animals on the back porch. Thank GOD dogs can't crow or there would be some explaining to do.
It was not my best breakfast effort. Thank goodness Enrique has a cast iron stomach and the patience of a saint. Saint Enrique, patron saint of patient husbands. I burned the beans, had to run out at the last minute for tortillas and the eggs were cold by the time I had everything on the table. I tried to "gourmet it up" by adding a sliced garden heirloom tomato. Nice try, right? FAIL.
When Enrique, mechanic extraordinaire, suggested I get a minivan, I just about fell over. MOI? In a minivan? Surely you jest. So. I did the first thing I thought of: I went to the gym and signed up with a trainer. And I am tired. All day long tired. When does it feel good? This exercising thing? For now, I feel as if I've had all of my energy and brains sucked out and left on the gym floor. She, Janet, the perky, bouncy, little buff trainer, swears I will feel the difference soon. Does that mean I will get my brain back? And exactly when do the Buns of Jello become Buns of Steel? My buns don't feel nothin' like steel. I'm still waiting....and waiting...Oh, for my 20 year old body to return...I didn't know I would miss it so much. This aging thing crept right up on me. I should have known when I went to my cosmetic surgeon for a consult. Instead of laughing gently and telling me I needed to wait a few more years before I need ANYTHING, he had the nerve to suggest botox and filler in my face! Can't he see the dewy skinned, bright eyed me that I see? What is wrong with the man??? I concede to gravity.
So back to breakfast and mornings. Instead of a sultry sleepy kitten (think young Jane Fonda), I now look like Ethyl Merman with a hangover in the mornings. If I have to accept that, could someone please give me her voice?
Thngs I am grateful for: laughing at myself, fresh eggs every morning and car options. Maybe.
Blessings, Tamara

Summer Birding in San Pancho!
|
Seasons change and birds migrate, it`s a fact!
Just as most tourists and part-time residents from North America travel back North once the atmosphere starts warming up and humidity reaches the top, most migratory birds migrate north too.
Birdwatching in the Riviera-Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta area during the summer time offers unique and special moments of beauty that are not experienced during the fall and winter times. Summer time for local birds and the few migrants remaining or coming-in this time of the year means dealing with the burning sun and the heavy rains, means taking care of the just hatched off-spring; having plenty of food as a result of increased humidity and rain but also having to defend their nesting grounds as bird-predators are eager to inspect nests looking for an un-hatched egg or a defenseless chick. All of these scenes while the few locals interested on bird-watching look for the moments when rain or the heat make it a good moment to go out and enjoy the truly tropical scene of birding in San Pancho.
Birdwatchers or not: enjoy the summer!

San Pancho Community Garden
| Reprinted from San Pancho Garden Blogspot
On May 24th, The 6-11 year-old children from Escuela del Mundo came by to tour the gardens and gave us a hand. They raked, picked mangoes, watered and ate an assortment of edible flowers without a cringe! When I was in school (in Lyon, France) not once did we have a field day at a farm or a park. It took me until my mid 40's to finally connect with the Earth and start growing food. I am glad these kids get out of the classroom and get to play gardeners.
