The Night-Birds of San Pancho
Part 2 of 2
|
Today, I want to share with you a brief review of the area`s most common nocturnal birds, including pictures and sounds of, hoping you can have a more direct reference to identify those whoot´s and screech sounds at night and hopefully get to see the birds.
Barn Owl (Tyto alba)
The Barn Owl is North America's only member of the, "Monkey-faced", Owl family Tytonidae (all other N.A. Owls are from the family Strigidae). The white breast and heart shaped face distinguish this owl from all others. Their call is not a hoot, as is expected with most owls, but more of a shrii or screech Click here to listen to sound.
Borrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia)
The Burrowing Owl is a smaller owl that lacks ear tufts. The upper parts are brown with dull white to light buffy-brown spots. The under parts are dull white with broad brown barring except the under tail coverts that are white. It has bold white eyebrows extending above and along the sides of the bill. The Burrowing Owl's eyes are lemon yellow and its bill is horn to cream colored.
The Burrowing Owl is the only owl in North and Central America that lives in a hole in the ground. It can often be found sitting at the entrance of its burrow in the daytime although it is mainly crepuscular or nocturnal. Click here to hear Borrowing Owl sounds.
Whip-poor-will (Caprimulgus vociferus)
Medium-sized nightjar. Very well camouflaged, colored in browns, black, and gray. Large-headed with a tiny bill. Because of its nocturnal habits, the Whip-poor-will is infrequently seen. Its cryptic coloring keeps it hidden during the day, too. However, its loud calling at dusk makes it well known wherever it breeds. Click here to hear Whip-poor-will sounds.

Notes from the Ranch

Happy Mother's Day!
I am lucky that I was able to celebrate both the Sunday holiday
of the US and the Tuesday holiday of Mexico. And Kar is here with me so

it is even sweeter. Bittersweet, too, because
this is the first year without Ruth. I miss her terribly.
I have a secret that not many but my closest friends know. I have lost my Mom to mental illness. She is living but has refused to speak to me for almost 20 years. It actually started when I was about 13 years old but came to a very ugly finish years later. I am to blame for all of her problems in her mind and her life. I have carried this wound for many years in private but now want to share it and get it out of my heart. None of my family except Adele have ever been to visit.
You know how it can be in families, in the heat of the moment things are said that both sides regret immediately. People take sides, lines are drawn. Accusations are easier than apologies.
Or in this case, many years of secrets and lies. I have taken the blame for the separation for too long and too many years. Thanks to 12 step programs I am no longer the keeper of the keys or of the shame.
I have been blessed in my life to have had Ruth Bode, my ex-mother-in-law. She started raising me when I was 19 years old. All I am I owe to her. She will always be my Mommy.
And I have had other mother figures in my life. They all have helped me to grow beyond my pain and embrace being a woman and a Mom. 12 step meetings have brought a sanity and peace. Thanks to my 12 step sisters, you know who you are.
I miss the small things that mothers and daughters share, laughing over coffee, walks, advice, long phone calls. Maybe I've painted a perfect world of other moms and daughters but I just feel left out. And now with Ruth gone, I am feeling like an orphan today. My sister-in-law Adele lost her mom at a very young age. Thanks to a strong family unit and lots of love, she is an amazing woman. But I can imagine a small part of how she feels.
So this is what I'm going to do today. Hug all of my "Mom" friends here in the village. So if I grab you in a big hug, just let me, okay?
Things I am grateful for: 12 step programs, long searched for love and my amazing, wonderful son, Kar.
Blessings, Tamara

San Pancho Community Garden
|
On May 13th, 20 people from a VolunTours group came to work in the San Pancho Community garden. VOLUNTOURS is an award winning volunteer organization that has won multiple regional and international awards in responsible and ethical tourism. They have volunteer projects in South Africa, Mauritius, Madagascar, Nepal, Peru, Malaysia and Borneo. Our young Capomo trees were moved to the new vivero (nursery) on the side of the Carpenters' bodega. The cages will protect the trees from the iguanas. Old tires were used to make planters. Many climbing vines and flowering shrubs were transplanted by some experienced gardeners. And a mattress was built for a new compost pile, as Compostland has now reached its maximum height. A group of students from Escuela del Mundo came to the community garden for a couple hours. They hadn't been to the garden since they helped clean the garbage from the old compost pile. We took a walk through the main garden and they got to taste lettuce, chard, basil, nasturtium and arugula flowers, and tomato. |
