April 8, 2011
Hola to our 725 La Voz Newsletter readers in San Pancho and around the world.
Well the time has changed, and we are all trying to get used to the dark mornings and what the children have to endure to get ready for school, parents tell me they have to set an alarm as the body clocks have not adjusted yet. The later nights which give us more time to spend with friends on the beach, catch up with me and I find myself waking later due to it being so dark! I don't think I ever get used to the dark mornings!
Remember only 2 more Friday's of Artwalk , don't miss out on this great event. There still is a lot of activity in San Pancho, although many are beginning to talk about the trek back home for the summer. Come out and enjoy the warm evenings and enjoy the village.
On Friday night at Panchito's we have yet another Kirkwood birthday celebration, come out at 8 pm for drinks and wish Bill a Happy Birthday, he does deserve equal time don't you think?
Make sure and visit the Calendar often to find out about the different events going on in San Pancho!
If you would like to write for us or submit photos, please contact me directly at Sandy@SanPanchoLife.com
Thanks for reading this week! Thank you for continuing to promote our village. Remember the more businesses and homes we get on the site the more press and visibility our village gets! Contact me if you want to talk about advertising.
Continue to post on our Facebook page, share your photos and news, the numbers continue to grow.
Saludos,

Bridge Progress Continues
|
Reprinted from SanPanchoWeather.com
Progress is steady and sure as the new bridge into San Pancho, Nayarit, nears completion. The sides of the bridge are nicely decorated with a coal-dark stone facing and tall black street lanterns are posted at the four corners of the crossing. The metal middle section of railing was painted a dark grey, but has been replace by a flourescent lime-green. (Maybe an undercoat I hope.)
Meantime, the CFE has trenches dug and empty conduits going underground on each side of the bridge, presumably to take the utility lines out of sight and to take down the concrete poles that block full access to the bridge on both sides.
The new PeMex station at San Pancho is rising above ground level at a speedy clip. It's rising a lot above ground level in fact. It seems to be perched on a hill that elevates it far above the grade of Ave. Tercer Mundo.
While I can make an predictions about the completion of the gas station, I'd say there's an excellent chance the bridge access will be completed in time for Semana Santa and those two utility poles at the bridge will be gone. Now if folks wouldn't park on both sides of the street entrance to the Bridge!
BTW: please note the "road less traveled" photo, our former lifeline to San Pancho!

San Pancho Art Walk - 2 Weeks Left!
|
Last Art Walk for the Season - next Friday April the 15th! Don't miss the chance to visit the stores tonight April 8th as well!
Is it possible that we are having the last Art Walk already? Time flies! Well, although, this is the last planned Art Walk, the wonderful shops, galleries and restaurants plan to stay open for awhile. The exciting news about this final day of the San Pancho Art Walk is that the participating businesses are cooperating so that it will be full of spirit - vibrating with the same energy as past Art Walks plus much more! There will be more live music, delicious appetizers catered by local restaurants, street performances and many surprises! Most of the activities will take place in the intersection between Huapango Gallery and Tatehuari Jewelry - with a "feast of appetizers" provided by restaurants like Cafe del Mar, Mar Plata, Costa Azul, Cielo Rojo's Bistro Organico and many more! We welcome other restaurants to join and appreciate anyone wanting to cooperate a few pesos for the entertainment (music, performers, etc). With more cooperation, we can make this a great "closing of San Pancho Art Walk 2011" - while at the same time, commemorating the coming of Spring, "Carnaval" Style. To cooperate, visit Ramon at Huapango Gallery or Susan at Tatehuari Jewelry as soon as possible.
So, mark your calendars - next Friday, April 16th 6pm - 9pm Celebrate Spring. Support Local Businesses. Final San Pancho Art Walk 2011! (extended another hour, as we enjoy longer days lately :) See you then!

Kites for Kids
|
Article by Karen Fredichs San Pancho Aire Kites When the San Pancho Aire Kites fly, the beach buzzes with excitement. Heads turn to the sky and children gather. They are often handed a line and experience the joy we all have when the kite is at our command.
Unfortunately, precious few of these children have the good fortune of ever owning a kite. A hand-made, custom kite is not in the household budget for most families. After hosting an paper kite making after-school program at entreAmigos, San Pancho Aire realized the children in town want their own kites. Thus the concept for Kites for Kids was created.

San Pancho Aire developed a plan making it possible for others to help put kites into the hands of kids in our community by partnering with entreAmigos in San Pancho and Casa de los Ninos in Los De Marcos.
A contribution of 500 pesos to Kites for Kids insures a contribution of a kite to those centers. The kids will then be taught how to assemble, fly, and care for one during the time they have it "checked out". The centers essentially become a lending library for kites. Training for flying the kites will take place on the San Pancho beach on Sundays with the San Pancho Aire crew.
San Pancho Aire has more information about the program and a thank you to those who contribute. The goal to have a fleet of kites in the air on the beach with joyful children running along beneath them. Please contact Karen for additional information.

CAPOMO!
| Article by: Glades Huizar
I always say (and like to write about) how fortunate I am to be living in this sweet coastal town. And one of the reasons I say so is for the endless examples of love and passion demonstrated by so many people and their willingness to share. My latest "fix" of witnessing this love and passion was with the group of CAPOMERO/AS lead by my dear friend and teacher, Rosa Orozco (and her co-teacher, Don'a Josefina) at the Capomo Talk and Workshop held last week in the entreAmigos kitchen. The seed of the Capomo tree is locally found; native to the Americas; has multitude of nutrients (more than what is found in beans or corn); is accessible in tons but seasonally; and is the focus of an international effort to "Finding Balance Between People, Food and Forests" by the Maya Nut Institute (www.mayanutinstitute.org) About 15 folks (while mostly gals, but Mario and Juan Diego - chefs of Hotel Cielo Rojo's Bistro Organico also joined in) attended this fun and very informative workshop. We peeled the nut (just harvested from the forest floor the day before), chopped, grounded, blended, mixed into amazing culinary delights. After 3 hours of non-stop prepping and chatting - about its vitamin content (better than beans, corn - highly recommended for pregnant women!) , about its pre-hispanic story (its basically one of the most original of our ancestral foods in the Americas) and general topics that arise when over a dozen ladies gather at once ( we had a few good laughs!) - we finally celebrated with a beautifully presented feast.
We even surprised our teachers with new concoctions like Crepes (made with capomo and wheat flour), fresh Capomo hummus (Gracias Mario and Juan Diego!) and the wonderful traditional dishes like delicious tamales, empanadas filled with squash, cheese filled croquetas with plantain and capomo masa, and tasty capomo, beet and carrot ceviche. Eating was just as enjoyable as the class! If you missed the workshop and want to know more, contact Rosa Orozco at (reon672000@yahoo.com.mx) for more information about the project. She recently finished a series at the Botanical Gardens in PV . A major part of her project is providing the same educational workshop to local rural towns (including villages where Capomo is prevalent, yet due to the lost tradition or lack of information, many are unaware of the unique benefits of Capomo (not only as food but as an important element for community sustainability). "The Maya Nut Institute's mission is to improve rainforest conservation, food security, women's income, status and self-esteem through production, consumption and sales of Maya Nut (Brosimum alicastrum). " As the season ends for harvesting Capomo nut, Rosa and her crew are busy doing as many talks and classes as possible. On Saturday, April 16th, Hotel Cielo Rojo will host a Talk and Tasting of Capomo - includes a presentation, a feast of Capomo delights (concocted by Bistro chefs) and a few surprises. A small donation (for materials and the project) will be requested (but no-one will be turned away for lack of funds). Also ready-made products will be available for purchase (such as Grounded Café of Capomo, Capomo "Flour", natural cookies or "gorditas" ). Space will be limited for this event, to reserve contact hotelcielorojo@yahoo.com / 311-258-4155. |

Collectivo San Pancho Art Exhibition
Follow-up!
|
BY DOUGLAS FIRPhotos by Tara Gimmer
On April 1 and 2 Bodega 3 came alive once again through the combined efforts of local artists and performers and the Colectivo San Pancho. The opening night was marred by a power outage that lasted for over an hour. Remarkably attendees stayed in place during the outage, and were treated to an extraordinary candle-lit classical Indian dance performed by Adriana Campos. Shortly thereafter power was restored and the superb lighting that Ariel Sainz had installed for his opening in December once again illuminated the paintings, textile arts, photography, sculpture, furniture pieces and jewelry that comprised the show. The party continued until 1:00 a.m. Once more Bodega 3 showed itself to be a versatile space with much potential for the local community of artists and art lovers. On Saturday night the show featured different performance including Sarita Muscarian a belly dancer Sarita that included a sword balanced on her head throughout the intense gyrations of the dance.
Local one-man circus, Condor, regaled young and old alike with his side-splitting clownish mime act. In all, the event continued the celebration of the arts in San Pancho for which we are deservedly known. Much credit goes to Rodrigo Ballester for spearheading the project and designing the use of the space, and to Luz Herrera, Ramiro González y Gaelle Posada for the installation.

Press Release: Team Costa Azul from San Clemente Travels to San Pancho to Compete in the 2011 Punta Sayulita Classic Surf and SUP Contest
|
Article by Pam Nagle & Allison Pastor
Team Costa Azul once again made a lasting impression at the Second Annual Punta Sayulita Classic in Nayarit Mexico March 12-13, 2011. Four members of the state champion San Clemente surf team were invited to compete in the Punta Sayulita Classic. The classic is a fundraiser for Reef Check and the Punta Sayulita Foundation. Surfers from around the globe competed in a Longboard and SUP wave riding contest, as well as, two SUP distance races.
Hallie Rohr, Karina Rozunko, and Perry Rohr, competed in longboard divisions and rider Emmy Merrill, a shortboarder competed in the SUP events. The event was filled with names recognized within the surfindustry. San Clemente alumnus Candace Appleby, a world SUP champion, competed in the SUP events along with longboarding names like Garrett McNamara, Chuck Patterson, and Gerry Lopez competed as well.
In the women's longboard competition, both Karina and Hallie advanced to finals. In a seesaw battle, the girls were out pointed by longboard star Mary Osborne. Karina finished a close second while Hallie finished fourth. Candace Appleby took the third position.
The men's longboard division was filled with professional longboard
competitors. Perry Rohr, the youngest competitor in the field at 14 years old, reached the semifinals showing spectacular nose riding skills.
Due to lack of women competitors, Emmy was able to compete with the men in the SUP events. Competing against some of the biggest names in the SUP industry, Emmy reached the semi finals in the SUP surfing event placing first or second in all of her heats. The surfers enjoyed a week of surfing warm water and perfect glassy conditions. All of the surfers were eager to give back to the community that has embraced and supported them the past two years.
The surfers along organized a surf clinic for the local children of the pueblo. Local San Pancho kids enjoyed an afternoon in the pool learning how to SUP and stand on a long board. There were eight kids that joined in the fun and are asking for more clinics in the future.
Two boards were donated to the kids of San Pancho. Costa Azul will check them out to local kids to use and develop their surfing skills. This group of kids is very interested in continuing to learn how to surf.
Our Dive Master and friend Lorenzo came by and gave the kids a taste of learning how to use dive equipment and swim underwater in the pool.
Following this great event for kids, the resort hosted a surfers beach party with live music by "Raices Negras" a Sayulita sensation. Everyone enjoyed a night of BBQ fish tacos with all the trimmings, tropical punch with fresh local fruit and dancing in the moonlight.
We hope to make next year's event even more spectacular!
