The 5 Most Common Birds in San Pancho

A few weeks ago I wrote about the 5 most wanted birds to look for in San Pancho. Today, I want to share with you the 5 bird species that you must know since they are everywhere and we all should be familiar with them.

1.    Great-tailed Grackle: a very common black "trash-bird" we can see at the playa. Males have an iridescent plumage (looks like blueish or purpleish) and a long keel-shaped tailed, yellow eyes and are very vocal making all kinds of  grackiehigh-pitched calls. Females are a little smaller. These grackles walk on ground or wade in water to forage. They Eat snails, insects, frogs, shrimp, small fish and birds, eggs and young of other birds, fruits, berries, seeds and grains. Strong direct flight.

2.     Sinaloa Crow: this is similar to the Great-tailed Grackle mentioned above, also a "trash-bird" but notice that these crows have a different tail (not keeled), their plumCrowage is dull, Sinaloa Crows have a thicker bill and black eyes. Food is taken both on the ground and in trees. On the seashore it can be found turning over objects to find its food and it will take a wide range of invertebrates such as small shellfish, crabs, and insects. Fruits of many types are also taken and eggs and nestlings are also on the menu when opportunity arises. Often, this bird will nest in a thorny tree or a tall coconut palm.

3.     Great Kiskadee: one of my favorites and the one I was called after. They have a very common call we can hear in most places around the kiskadeetown, a melodic and repeated "keeskadee". Great Kiskadees belong to the flycatcher family, they feed on insects but is also common to see them feeding on fruits.

4.     Golden-cheeked woodpecker: this is probably the must fun bird to watch (if not pecking on your wooden poles)woodpecker. These golden-faced woodpeckers with black and white streaks on their backs love to feed on fruits and pecking on wood. They feed on insects and fruits and are commonly seen on the palm-trees at the beach and the large fig-trees by the malecon.

5.     Yellow-winged Cacique: a very common bird on gardens and orchards. Caciques have very distinctive black and yellow colors and a conspicuous crest; they are known for having the caciquemost melodious calls, often mimicking other birds. Caciques or "Calandrias" as they are called in Spanish make the long bag-shaped nests that hand from large trees. They feed on fruits and insects.

Our neighbors in Sayulita support San Pancho's Escuela del Mundo TONIGHT MARCH 25TH!

Esculsdelmundologo

Tonight March 25th! in Sayulita  there is an evening of fun, laughs while at the same time helping important educational programs for our communities.

Families are invited to a Movie night at the beach front restaurant - Break Fast Cafe in Sayulita - at 6:30PM. Showing Disney's "TANGLED", owner , Octavia (and mom of a preschooler in Escuela del Mundo) is suggesting a Family Rate (of all sizes) of $150 pesos -- and she'll even throw in delicious popcorn for everyone! And, since the showing is also to support Escuela del Mundo, parents of this San Pancho Montessori school will be selling tamales, dessert and more. Come early to find the best seat in the house,, or the beach. Gracias Octavia and Rene!

If you need to warm up before the movie, our friend Jim Gallas is offering a Theater Games/Freedom in Movement class at Don Pedro's Palapa at 5:00 to 6:30pm. Imrov Theater Games will be followed by a Dance Jam! Sounds like a party ! This gathering is alcohol and drug free. Suggested donation for the workshop is 150 pesos - goes to support both Costa Verde School and Escuela del Mundo. Gracias Jim!

Primavera Parade of the Ninos or The Spring Parade of the Children

Photos Elisabeth McCool

Event Information by sanpanchoweather.com

The arrival of Spring on March 21 coincides with the birth date of Benito Jurez, the indigenous Zapotec and President of Mexico who is known as the "Father of the Americas". In San Pancho, the children from the kindergarten (with a little help from proud parents) were all decked out (as were the pickup truck floats) as they paraded down Avenida Tercer Mundo on Monday, the 21st and again on the following day. The second day's parade ended up at the kindergarten where everyone, kids and parents alike, enjoyed refreshments and sweets to celebrate the occasion.

Enjoy the photos provided by Elisabeth.  Additional photos can be viewed at SanPanchoWeather.com

San Pancho Community Association Forming

By Jordi Ferrara

About a a month ago a group of people began working on the idea of

creating an Association that would assist in the development of this great small town of San Pancho.  A couple of weeks ago on a Wednesday, the group met at the Hotel Costa Azul.  The group presented to the public what the group is doing and invited them to participate.

We had 32 people present of whom 60% were American or Canadian.

community association

We would like to  thank  the Costa Azul Resort for allowing us to hold our reunion at their facilities.

If your interested in joining the group or would like more information please contact

Jordi Ferrara.

Notes from the Ranch

It is a sad day in San Pancho for many of us "old-timers". Gallo, Manuel Landa, died last night. I just am back from the Mass at the Catholic church. How he would laugh at a Mass being held for him! He was a good Communist to the end. But I've realized in the last few years as family and friends have passed away that the ritual is for US, the living.

Gallo was born in Vera Cruz and moved to France in his early 20's. He taught music at a local school and in after school programs. He "retired" here in San Pancho with his wife and daughter, Isabelle, in 1999.

He showed his love through his music. And he could play! All stringed instruments were magic under his fingers. And he loved flutes of any sort. Remember his performances at the San Pancho Music Festival? He was the closing act for many years. I remember one year, probably 2005, that we were all in Trish and John's backyard, where the music festival began, and just as Gallo was to perform we lost power. Everyone rounded up candles and flashlights and we were treated to an acoustic set. It was magic. Anytime Gallo was on stage performing, there was magic in the air. He had a presence that drew people to him.

I think that after his 3 children, the most important thing for him was helping the poorest and most lost. We used to joke that he was the King of the Misfits. And it was true. He had a space in his heart for everyone.

When he had Gallo's restaurant, he was in his element. Greeting guests to his "home". Making sure that everything was perfect for every guest.

He wasn't a saint by any means. He pissed me off on a daily basis for the years we were together. I'd tear my hair out in frustration. But he was true to himself and what he believed. And his love for those close to him had no boundaries. I think he found some peace in the past few years with Veronica. galloShe is an angel. And he found a kindred spirit in Bill G.

Rest in peace, Pinche Cabrn.

Things I am thankful for: this day, Enrique's never ending love, and life.

Blessings, Tamara
