Sponsorship Fund Update:

All of us at Escuela del Mundo want to extend our biggest thanks to our most recent donation to the Sponsorship Fund from Donna Graham. Donna is a grandmother of two of our students. Her contribution of $250 dollars to the fund helps us get closer to our goal of $75,000 pesos ( approx $6200 dollars) before the end of the year.  THANK YOU DONNA GRAHAM! The giving spirit of the Graham family runs deep - Roberto and Alexandra (parents of Summer and Carlotta) donated cash to the school's recent event so that we can print the "Yo Amo /I heart Escuela del Mundo" stickers! (if you haven't put one on your car yet, you can still get yours for only 20 pesos at the school office!) Thanks to the entire Graham Family for this and other in-kind donations they've contributed to our school.

Award of the Colorado Vacation Home goes to...

Farmer family won the highest bid at $400 dollars for a 5-night stay in the beautiful "Nest" - a Vacation Home of one of our sponsors and friend, Lynn Cole. Thank you to all of you for your generosity. Lynn is donating 100% of the bid to the school! If you want to know more about her beautiful vacation rental in Durango, contact lynsee@bresnan.net.

Escuela del Mundo preschool was invited to attend the "Himno National Exposition" - where the little one sang the national anthem representing San Pancho.

We were one of 8 other groups participating in this civic event in Mezcales.

Thanks to the teachers and staff who accompanied our

young students during the outing. "Felicidades" to our Preschoolers!

In continuation of last month's National celebration, our elementary students created a presentation of the history and evolution of the

Mexican flag - and its significance. Thanks to those parents who came to hear them read and share

what they learned about

this part of Mexican History.

When our students are not in

their academic classes, they enjoy workshops in

Music ( continuing their Recor

Yoga with our newest visiting teacher - Estivaliz

who comes to us weekly from Puerto Vallarta!

Both our Preschool and Elementary groups will have the special opportunity to work with a wonderful yoga teacher who is also a social/cultural activist in the bay!

Gracias Estivaliz.....

This Years San Pancho Music Festival was the most successful Music Festival yet.  Attendance was the largest of all festivals.

Through generous donations almost $9000 pesos were contributed by the audience, this exceeded festival organizers expectations.

Steve O'Connor donated all proceeds from his CD sales to the Festival funds. Most of the musicians were thrilled to perform, and have committed to return in 2012.  Enjoy a few photos of the festival taken by Chris Parsons, LightStyle Photography.

The 5 most wanted: The coolest birds to look for while in San Pancho

Today I want to share with you what I believe are the coolest and most wanted birds to look for while Birding in San Pancho.

1.     Elegant trogon: This is a fairly common bird with a wide distribution ranging from  Southern US to Costa Rica. This bireleganttrogand species has a great sense of appreciation since is bears the colors of the Mexican flag. Elegant Trogons are normally found in dense primary or secondary vegetation forests. Trogons feed on insects and fruits; they normally sit still on a branch and sometimes are even curious of people.

2. Russet-Crowned Motmot: This is a less common bird but can also be found in the surroundings of town or sometimes even in the gardens, especially in shady areas. They feed on insects and it is very cool to watch them hunt since they move their pealed-off tail asquirrelcuckoos a pendulum. Good luck on this one!

3. Squirrel Cuckoo: Cinnamon red with long tail, beautiful birds to watch. Squirrel Cuckoos are normally found in areas with secondary vegetation, mostly thorn-forest and deciduous trees. Their long tails with stripes and cinnamon color make them unmistakable once you found them. They are not elusive, normally curious about people.

4. Ferruginous Pigmy-Owl: is always a treat! These tiny owls are diurnal and they can be found in the surroundings of town, sometimes by the malecon, the plaza, the Golf-course road or even the civic garden or the bodegas. Sometimes before seeing them you can listen to their sharp toned repeated whoots. Have fun watching these amazing creatures!purplegallinules

5. Purple Gallinules: Are now common at the estuary. They are purple with blue and red spots in their face, long yellow legs and a white spot in their rumps. I invite you to  enjoy the beauty of these rare creatures taken out from a fairy tale.

Either on your own or with a guide, by yourself or with company I encourage you to go and look for these living treasures that make our town a more colorful and beautiful place. Enjoy!

Disfruten!

Notes from the Ranch

I'm back after a little vacation! And the weather is wgarden2arming up finally. I've moved my kitchen table out to the garden. I love living out of doors but the cold weather has had me inside, windows shut, bundled up. No more! Coffee and reading with the sun shining and the birds singing. Well, the chickens don't sing, they gossip. I've trained the chickens too well. The moment they sense activity in the house, usually around 6:00am, they are right there at the gate, making starving noises. Have you ever seen the movie, Chicken Run? I think I have a couple of the retired stars in my garden. Broody gals.

The orchid trees are blooming and the yard is filled with their scent and blossoms. The marigolds are blooming, too. I don't quite know how I garden1 am going to grow marigolds in the Autumn for Day of the Dead. It is too wet and hot but they are the traditional flower for the celebration. In Apanish, their name is Zempasuchitl. I love their showy blooms and they last forever when cut. I have a huge vase of them in the dining room and bedrooms. The heritage tomato plants are growing by leaps and bounds. Of course I didn't label the seeds last fall so we are in for a surprise. I hope there are some of the little yellow pear tomatoes. I eat them right off of the plant.
And with the weather change come the Mosquitos, or Zancudos. I have tried all sorts of herbal repellents but after having dengue, I go straight for the chemicals, my favorite being OFF. There is a craft project for making mosquito traps out of old 2 liter pop bottles. If you want the instructions, send an email to me. I have not tried it but am going to make a couple next week and I'll let you know how they work. garden3

Farmers Market had a nice group of young people sharing the plaza with us last Saturday. A Christian church sent down a group to set up a camp for local kids and by the smiles on the faces of the kids, it was a huge success. Thank you Nicole and Edsen for organizing this. I hope to see them back next year. Good clean fun!

I am in Mom heaven. Karstan has moved back to San Pancho! Yeah! Well, I feel like this now but after a few weeks of 21 year old young man living at home, I'm sure I'll be looking for apartments for him to rent! So I'll enjoy this moment before I become resentful. Hey, it happens to the best of us!
I'm looking for 2 pygmy goats. Anyone?

Have a super week. And remember to tell those close to you how much you love them. I am still mourning Ruth, very tender at the moment.
Things I am thankful for: banks in Bucerias, oranges at 7 pesos a kilo and dog breath.

Blessings, Tamara

Valentine's Day in El Tuito

Reprinted from San Pancho Writers, Nayarit  Posted by Nancy Brown February 24, 2011.

The B & B where we stayed on February 14 was perfect for a Valentine's Day getaway. Located south of Puerto Vallarta in the quiet old town of El Tuito, El Jardin (The Garden) is run by a French couple whose taste runs to the romantic. "A Touch of Paris in Mexico" is the hotel's motto. Draperies of raspberry-colored silk, diaphanous panels used as room dividers, fluffy pink towels, and candles, candles, candles made for a sensuous setting. Feather boas and bouquets of roses added to the lavish effect.

After settling in, we browsed around El Tuito and went for dinner at Valle Azul, a restaurant with a few sidewalk tables near the main plaza. As we waited for our coconut shrimp, we watched a vendor selling Valentine balloons and stuffed animals wrapped in pink and red. We were musing about what a special Valentine's Day it had been, when a pickup truck loaded with a slaughtered cow pulled up and parked in front of our table. A skinless head, eyes intact and horns attached, and clear plastic bags of cow innards balanced on piles of bloody meat.

A large fellow wearing a black plastic apron hopped out of the truck, pulled up the metal door of the butcher shop next to our restaurant and backed up the truck smack against our table.

I know what's going to happen next , I thought, and I'm not going to let it bother me. Our coconut shrimp arrived.

The burly butcher slung a side of beef over his shoulder and carried it into his shop. He looked like a strong guy, but it wasn't easy.

Not going to bother me, not going to bother me

, I repeated to myself. I thought of my vegetarian daughter, and though I miss her, I was glad she was not there at that moment. The butcher finished unloading the carcass just as we polished off the coconut shrimp.

We settled up with Valle Azul and I asked the butcher what he did with the horns. Unless they are especially big ones, he said, he throws them out.

Seems a shame, I thought, but if there is something useful you could do with cow horns, a butcher would have thought of it by now.

In hopes of getting a photo memento of our special Valentine's Day dinner, we stopped the next morning at the butcher shop. The sides of beef hung from hooks behind the counter, where the butcher stood, slicing fat from chunks of steak. "That was one big cow," I observed as a conversation starter. "Very heavy, about 500 kilos--more than a thousand pounds," he said. The butcher, whose name is Joaquin Gómez, seemed pleased when I asked if I could take a photo, and he wondered if it would be on the Internet. "I don't have email myself," he said, "but my sister in California does, and she can send me a copy."

So here's to you, El Jardin del Tuito and Joaquin Gómez. And thank you for making Valentine's Day 2011 a memorable one.
