San Pancho Lifeguard Team!

By: Brian Johnson - Lifeguard Program Develop, ent

Filling an important gap in community emergency services, San Pancho now has a professionally trained and certified volunteer ocean lifeguard team.  These local men and women passed a rigorous training course provided by professional lifeguard trainers  and firemen from throughout the United States and Mexico.

The San Pancho lifeguard team, along with a team in Sayulita, is the first step in bringing necessary emergency services to the area by the Zack Chambers San Pancho/Sayulita Emergency Services Foundation.

 Lifeguards

This foundation is dedicated to memory of Zack Chambers, who died in 2010 from injuries received while swimming in Sayulita.  You can learn more about the foundation and their activities in San Pancho at safesayulita-sanpancho.org.

San Pancho's volunteer guards provide service on weekends, Semana Santa and other periods of high beach use.  They are not paid and are risking their own well-being to help make San Pancho a safer community for all of us, so please feel free to give them a thumbs up when you see the red jerseys and rescue buoys.

CPR CLASSES a HUGE SUCCESS

Last month more than 250 people in the towns of San Pancho, Sayulita, Higuera Blanca and Punta de Mita became certified in CPR and basic first aid.

Next Spanish Class Session

starts February 28th!

This summer, our very own Spanish teacher July Aquino, spent 4 weeks in intensive training offered by Cambridge University,

in Mexico City.  This training formalized the many years of experience that July brought to her Spanish instruction and she has an entirely new and very impressive program and format for this years Spanish classes.

hola logo Classes are 1.5 hours a day (two days a week) and include 20 hours of instruction.  Six levels from beginning, intermediate and advanced instruction will be offered.

The cost per six week block is $1500pesos plus $200 pesos for materials.

There is something for everyone if you want to learn Spanish;  private classes,  weekly Conversation Club and weekly

Spanish workshops are also available if you are unable to enroll in the full 6-week Spanish program.

Offering Spanish Classes is one of the ways that entreAmigos is working hard this year to generate the funds towards our financial sustainability.  Taking Spanish is good for you and good for your community!!

You must pre-register for the 6-week program.  Please stop by entreAmigos and meet with July next week between 10 - 12  or send an email to [email protected]

Sueos Alegres Daycare Centre presently takes care of 20 children and has a capacity of 39.  The centre is financially supported and accredited by the Mexican government to assist working parents in San Pancho.   The reason for the fundraiser is to supply things beyond the scope of the government funding. Things we take for granted in the United States and Canada to promote the development and growth of our young.

This daycare must abide by the building and daycare codes set out by the Mexican authorities.  For example, they need proper wooden half doors between each room and exterior exits.  Financial support by our community would be wonderful, but the support can be as simple as giving them access to a photocopier.  As in any operation, there has to be a paper trail of applications, copies of birth certificates etc. that need to be kept on file.

sueosalegresdaycare

Hopefully, our support will bring forth generous people who will donate in many ways.  Donations can be in the form of something one doesn't use or need but would be beneficial to the daycare.  There is a wall of shelves that sit with a handful of toys to stimulate these children.  There are only a few plastic tables and chairs.  We are talking simple things that would make a world of difference and make this a happier place for these children.

There will be a "list" posted outside the theatre, just in case, any of us have anything that we could spare and donate. Or, you may have an expertise in something that would greatly enrich the daycare and the children.

Please come and support something that will make you feel good and fun as well.

We hope to see you there!!

Yo AMO Escuela del Mundo / I HEART Escuela del Mundo -- Thanks to all for your support!

                                  poster escuela
Escuela del mundo parents and staff would like to express their sincerest appreciation to all the contributors, volunteers, friends who made last sunday's DANZAS DEL MUNDO at Sayulita's Tekari Bar & Restaurant a most fun and heartfelt event - helping our San Pancho Montessori School to raise funds for its Sponsorship Program.

Folks from San
escuela studentsPancho, Sayulita, Lo de Marco, La Penita came out to show their generous support.  It was an evening complete with dance performances from around the world, videos featuring the wonderful work being done at Escuela del Mundo, (and even a premiere of Sayulita 2010 Competition Video by Darrin at Mango Tree), buffet of healthy and delicious tostadas, a silent auction of a escuela15-night Vacation Stay in Durango Colorado (Gracias Lynn Cole)
escuela5

Plus the festive, lively spirit we always enjoy at Escuela del Mundo gatherings.  . As a special detail, parents created over 60 decorative hearts (one for each student and teacher) whichhearts guests purchased and added messages -- then were later delivered to the school the next day as a surprise for EVERY child and teacher on Valentine's Day. The love for this project -- demonstrated with each detail at the event -- was definitely clear and felt by all.  And, it continues beyond the fundraising activity -- everyone's support, kind words and the smile of each Escuela del Mundo child who received these "valentines" continue to fuel the inspiration of the project.

Finally, the money raised to help sustain the school's Sponsorship Program for local Mexican students not only provide the financial assistance to a deserving child but more importantly the opportunity is a seed for transforming families -- as everyone is encouraged to actively participate in the lives of their young children.  escuela4

Notes from the Ranch

Hello, everyone.

This will be a short column this week. It is a sad time at the ranches right now. My best friend, my mentor, my teacher, my Mom, Ruth Catherine Bode, passed away Wednesday morning at 97 years young. It was time, her body failed her in the end. But she had an amazing life, one which I was blessed to share with her for 32 years.

I met Ruth when I started dating her son, Tom, who is Karstan's dad. I was 19 years old and she scared the heck out of me! She was larger than life with a booming voice that held no room for argument. It was her way or the highway. I learned a lot from her, about being a lady, about basing my life in my faith and letting go of trying to control everything and everyone. That was advice she had a hard time putting into practice herself and one that I still struggle with daily.

Ruth was the first woman principal of the Chicago inner-city school system in the 1940's. She "retired" and married at 39 and had 4 boys in 5 years while helping her husband, Nick, run the family hotel and restaurant and teaching 5th grade at the local Catholic school. Nick fell in love with her when she was 17 years old and told her best friend that he was going to make his fortune and come back and marry her. He was an East German immigrant that arrived with nothing but a few semi-precious stones hidden in jam jars. He went on to own a gold mine and many hotels. She waited 24 years. It was worth it.Ruth bode

The family settled in Moscow, Idaho, where they owned, and still own, the Moscow Hotel. Now it is apartments, retail spaces, restaurants and 2 bars. Her four sons, now grown men with families of their own, have held true to the values instilled in them by their parents: work, faith, community.

When I met Ruth I was struggling to heal from my own family and she took me in and made me her daughter. Always a shoulder to cry on, a hand to hold and a friend to pray with. She saved me when I couldn't save myself. Everything I am I owe to Ruth and her tutelage.
When I look back on my life in this moment of deep sorrow, I see her, raising me to be who I am now. And I am proud of that person.

She organized things until the very end. She passed away the same hour that Karstan was boarding a plane to come home for a visit. We can be together and remember this amazing force, this extraordinary woman, Ruth Bode.

Be well, love those around you and always give thanks.
Things I am grateful for: Ruth, Karstan and Enrique.
Blessings, Tamara

Where are the Brown Pelicans?

This is a question that probably some of you, dear readers, as well as some people I have taken on birding tours have been asking in the last months. The fact is: Since the fall of 2010 , we have not flockpelicansseen the usual large (up to 40 individuals) V-shaped  formations made by flocks of Brown Pelicans; we only get to see small flocks (let say less than 20 individuals) that might be migratory or possibly resident individuals.

I anticipate to you that I do not have a clear answer yet, but I do have some useful information, hints and some almost-discarded hypothesis.  Hopefully with your help and encouragement we will be able to find out a clearer picture of this still unveiled mystery.

Useful Information and a almost discarded hypothesis.

A good place to start is looking at the migration and distribution patterns of Brown Pelicans. Basically there are some pelicans that migrate south in the late summer from feeding areas in the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of US and Canada to breeding areas in more tropical latitudes. Some of these pelicans in breeding areas stay and become what is called (tropical) residents. Then in the late spring or early summer, after breeding season, flocks of Pelicans return north to their summer feeding grounds. This link obrownpelicanf Birds of North America Online offers a very detailed (scientifically based) explanation on Brown Pelicans migration along both the Atlantic and Pacific coast.  The information on this article helps to, at least directly, discard the hypothesis of West coast populations of this species being affected by the BP oil-spill off the Atlantic coast last year in which thousands of individuals were affected.

So, for now the information on migratory patterns leaves our issue of the observed decrease of migratory Brown Pelicans in this area of the coast, limited to the Pacific Coast population. I will continue this story next week. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or might have some pieces of this puzzle...
