NOTE FROM THE JUDGES OFFICE!

Work on the main bridge continues. We may have a completed bridge before Semana Santa.

                                 bridge 2

The planters on Tercer Mundo are being filled and the Judge is asking for the business owners and homeowners to help maintain the palms by watering them 3 times a week.

There have been fewer burglaries now that the 2 main suspects have been identified and dealt with. Still remember to lock up and tell your guests and visitors to do the same.

The beach and estuary are clean and clear.

Current local activities:

Saturday Farmers Market, Entre Amigos, Luis' Bird Watching and the San Pancho Music Fest will be the last weekend of February. Please support our local activities.

The dumpster is still on the beach road across from the plaza, please use it.

Yakati Yak Jack

Yakati Yak Jack

Today Manuel brings us a gift. Unannounced, he lumbers down the steps that lead from the street to our garden retreat lugging a bulbous object with both hands. His knees are splayed wide to better support the weight of what he carries. Teenage sons Harry and Edgar bring up the rear.

"Yaka," says Manuel. He looks around for an appropriate perch in which to set it down. The wide edge of the pool will do. "Deliciosa, y para la salud, excelente."

"He says it tastes good. And it's good for you." Harry translates although we easily get the drift of where the scenario is going. Edgar wrinkles his nose. We soon learn why.

My husband and I had seen the gigantic globes of yaka, or jackfruit, hanging from hooks at fruit stands alongside the highway between Las Varas and San Pancho. We had never given close inspection. I scrutinize this specimen with suspicion as to edibility. The greenish pimply rind looks like a porcupine with snubbed-off quills. Harry tells us he doesn't particularly like the taste of the fruit, but it's okay when blended with milk and banana for breakfast. "Good for virility," he adds.

Okay. I'm game.

Manuel requests a knife, cooking oil, a bowl, another bowl with water, discarded newspaper. The ceremony begins. Like a surgeon he makes a clean cut, severing the beastie in two. He douses both hands in vegetable oil and plunges inside the folds of the fruit. Up to his wrists he curls his fingers around two-inch-long brown pods nestled beneath slippery squares of pale orange flesh. Pods tossed on the newspaper, pulpy flesh plopped in the bowl of water. A strong scent, like cheap perfume from the five and dime.

About 30 minutes later Manuel's midwifery yields dozens of pods and a bowl heaped with slimy-looking foodstuff. He dunks the fruit a bit, swirls it around the bowl, offers me first bite.
Tastes like over-ripe cantaloupe this side of floozy: a little too much scent and slick for my taste, but, hey, it is interesting. Samples all around. My husband, Win, looks askance. Harry passes. So does Edgar. Manuel takes a sizeable chomp, grins.

I thank Manuel for expanding my culinary experience. He thanks me for the work we provide his family, and for the referrals we are happy to give our friends.

"Le gusta armadillo?" he asks, as he prepares to leave. I look at Harry. I look at Edgar. I look at Win. "Did Manuel say armadillo?" I ask."

"Afraid so," says Win.

Escuela del Mundo Fundraiser

Escuela del mundo

San Pancho's Escuela del Mundo -- Fundraising event in Sayulita's Tekari (former Dragon Rojo) "Dances of the World"

Sunday 6pm $150 pesos ($120 pesos presale)

includes delicious food donated by parents and local restaurants.  And a show of various dance groups. Plus, the TEKARI bar will be open! Proceeds go to support Escuela del Mundo's Sponsorship Program.

Enjoy the evening with your friends and support an

important educational project in our area! Escuela del Mundo, is  a non profit school offering Montessori based learning to children from  ages 3 to 12 (preschool through elementary). While parents pay tuition  in order to sustain the school, local Mexican families are offered  enrollment through a student sponsorship program. Your  attendance and support make this possible.

Tickets available at Medusa Restaurant & Mango Tree (Sayulita) or at Escuela del Mundo (San Pancho) 311-258-4441, escueladelmundo@yahoo.com.mx

A bit of history on Escuela del Mundo:

Five years ago, Escuela del Mundo began as a parent-founded educational project, providing an option for parents seeking quality educational opportunities. Opening its doors in 2006  to its first generation of 19 students , Escuela del Mundo received its SEP cettification and became the first alternative school in the area - now children from Sayulita, Lo de Marcos and La Penita are part of its growing school community of over 55 students.

              Escuela del mundo children

Our vision:  create an educational experience - based on the Montessori method of teaching - that values the holistic growth of the child,  a strong family involvement with an emphasis on responsibility, cooperation and a strong sense of connectedness to the universe.

Supported by monthly tuition  paid by the parents and some student sponsors, Escuela del Mundo is a non-profit school - registered in the state of Nayarit as a Civil Association - which receives NO state or federal asístanse and relies on the commitment of its parent community to sustain the school through accessible tuition fees, endless volunteer work and inkind donations.

However, not all families can contribute equally.

This year, Escuela del Mundo offers financial help to over 10% of its student population in the form of a scholarship program - for deserving children from Mexican families with very limited resources.

Unfortunately, the school struggles to meet its goal to raise adequate funds to match the number of students in the scholarship program.

And, there are many more children and families with hopes to be part of Escuela del Mundo ....

*******

Thanks to our current individual sponsors, the school can count on over 50% of the total tuition for these students seeking assistance.  However, we are asking for more sponsors to help us reach our goal. With the event like this Sunday, Escuela del Mundo hopes to raise its needed $75,000 pesos to go towards the Student Sponsorship Fund.

From all of the kids and families at Escuela del Mundo, we thank you for your support and encouragement.

Here's how you can contribute:

Scholarships range from $1300 usd to $2300 usd per year - also partial sponsorships are welcomed.  Or small donations of any amount towards the student sponsorship fund is valuable and important in helping us reach our goal.

Here's how you can contribute:

-- visit our school office with your cash donation or make a deposit into our HSBC account

-- donation through Paypal.com (full, partial or a one-time donation of any amount)

-- make monthly commitment from as little as $10 usdollars (or higher) a month through Paypal as an ongoing Sponsor

paypal account name:  escueladelmundo@yahoo.com.mx

Your contribution will help a local child enroll in a Montessori environment  - to learn in a caring community of adults and children; to be a curious and productive member of the community. We believe opportunities for education like Escuela del Mundo is one of the most valuable gifts we can offer a child  ...while, at the same time , transforming families as everyone learns to participate in this important time in a young child's development.

See you Sunday at Tekari !!

Monday   Feb 14   5:30 pm  King's Speech

Thursday Feb 17  5:30 pm  The Fighter                      Thursday  Feb 24  5:30 pm   True Grit

On February 14th what better way to celebrate Valentines Day before you go out for a romantic dinner!  Come watch the King's Speech!

With the generous support of the San Pancho Cultural Centre, we are pleased to present 4 of this year's best Academy Award nominated films benefiting the Suenos Alegres Daycare Centre.

Sueños Alegres Daycare Centre presently takes care of 20 children and has a capacity of 39.  The centre is financially supported and accredited by the Mexican government to assist working parents in San Pancho.   The reason for the fundraiser is to supply things beyond the scope of the government funding. Things we take for granted in the United States and Canada to promote the development and growth of our young.

This daycare must abide by the building and daycare codes set out by the Mexican authorities.  For example, they need proper wooden half doors between each room and exterior exits.  Financial support by our community would be wonderful, but the support can be as simple as giving them access to a photocopier.  As in any operation, there has to be a paper trail of applications, copies of birth certificates etc. that need to be kept on file.

sueosalegresdaycare

Hopefully, our support will bring forth generous people who will donate in many ways.  Donations can be in the form of something one doesn't use or need but would be beneficial to the daycare.  There is a wall of shelves that sit with a handful of toys to stimulate these children.  There are only a few plastic tables and chairs.  We are talking simple things that would make a world of difference and make this a happier place for these children.

There will be a "list" posted outside the theatre, just in case, any of us have anything that we could spare and donate. Or, you may have an expertise in something that would greatly enrich the daycare and the children.

Please come and support something that will make you feel good and fun as well.

We hope to see you there!!

Diane Nixon (258-4519) and Laurie O'Reilly (258-4228)

                  entreAmigos 5 Year Anniversary Photos

By Nicole Swedlow

This past week entreAmigos celebrated their 5 year anniversary of working in San Pancho.  It was a fun, family event with pinatas and a giant birthday cake.  The accomplishments of entreAmigos were evident in the photo display of 100's of photos of past events and activities and the 100's of people that came out for the night.  Families delighted in seeing themselves on the wall and even more so when they were able to take home their photos at the end of the evening.

Thank you for supporting this great event.

Notes from the Ranch

Rancho Milagro is once again filled with old friends! Three friends have traveled from Moscow, ID to San Pancho and they are enchanted with our little pueblo. Time flies; I've known the 3 of them for over 30 years! Jeanne and I were pregnant at the same time and Mark built our house. I am so glad that friends from my "old life" are taking the time to come and see my "new life". We have a lot of catching up to do! And if life were not sweet enough, Karstan arrives for a 2 week visit next Wednesday! So there will be lots of cooking and talking to be done. He and I always have cooked together, one of our special things. And we'll make his favorite dish: Chicken Mole.

I have a new rooster, Telly Savalas. Foghorn Leghorn is still MIA so he has been replaced! The hens are happy and producing beautiful organic Telly seggs. I'll leave some in the nests so that we have little chicks soon. And 2 more hens have moved in! Telly has quite a harem. I love watching them take dirt baths. And the cat, Misu, joins right in with them. Then she wants to sleep on the bed. Uh, no.

I had a wee bit of a horse headbutt last week and I looked like I had gone 3 rounds with Ali. I've included a photo of the little stinker. With a face like that, who would guess she was a handful? I picdirt bathked myself up, counted teeth, all still there, thank God, both eyes in their sockets and no fractures. I was very lucky. She and I are going to have words, soon.
Jason is back on the ship and won't be home again until December. I miss our morning debriefs in the garden.

I've given up coffee, yes, again, and am enjoying the pleasures of hot Chai tea. Reminds me of my years in India. Speaking of India, I've reconnected with a good friend there and he is shipping some yummy spices here! I can't wait to try them all. horse

The garden looks like a disaster zone but everything is growing and maturing. Martha Stewart I am not.

I'll see you at Farmers Market on Saturday!

Things I am thankful for: warmer mornings, laughter and memories with old friends and my boots. Who loves ya, baby?
Blessings, Tamara
