Back in Business - Bridge is almost finished

As I walked down San Pancho's main street in mid-October, a sign in a shop window caught my eye: "20% OFF ON EVERYTHING UNTIL THE BRIDGE IS FIXED." Now that sign is gone. People and vehicles can cross the river into San Pancho again, and the Avenida is bustling with commerce.

Torrential rains in early September caused flooding, mudslides and bridge collapses throughout the Bahia de Banderas area. "The most rain I can remember in 50 years," one San Pancho old-timer said. On September 6 rushing water and fallen trees slammed into the San Pancho bridge. It collapsed, creating a crisis in both economic and human terms: The village was cut off from Highway 200 and the rest of the world; families who lived near the river banks became homeless overnight; houses were inundated with up to four feet of water.

The people of San Pancho rallied. They improvised a zipline across the river and then threw together a rickety wooden footbridge. Seventy people whose homes had been washed away lived and ate for two weeks in EntreAmigos, the town's community center. The owners of La Patrona Polo Club donated things like baby diapers and food and sent a boatload of supplies to the San Pancho beach.

High-riding SUVs could ford the river not long after the washout, but regular cars couldn't make it across. The water was just too high. To solve this problem a raised dirt embankment was built in late October. It is only one lane, and if you don't have your wits about you, your car could slide into the water, but the embankment serves its purpose. Regular vehicle traffic in and out of San Pancho resumed.

Local people saw a business opportunity: all those hungry bridge workers; heavy traffic all day on the embankment. New taco stands sprang up, one of which also advertises low-cost haircuts and manicures. A portable hot dog stand parks at the site. An enterprising woman sells clothing, displayed on a clothesline like clean wash. Victoriano Mendez, the artist who used to set up his easels near the bridge, has returned, painting and selling his landscapes.

Construction is almost complete on the new bridge. San Pancho is back in business.

Notes from the Ranch

It was a Foodie Weekend! This was Jason's last weekend home so we decided to make it a food adventure. And what a perfect weekend it turned out to be! Saturday was Farmers Market where we had a lot more visitors and more vendors. We decided on Carnitas for breakfast from the taco stand on the corner across from the park. Usually I ask for the lean meat but he had sold out. We dove bravely in and had "sfoodurtidos". This means that basically whatever he had left over, in it went. It was a mix of tongue, tripe, cheek, belly and a bit of meat. I didn't ask what was in them until I finished. They were...okay, gamey, chewy.

Then after a bit of time on the beach after Market, Enrique decided that he wanted to treat us to dinner at his favorite restaurant in Las Piedras, about 10 kms north of Las Varas. This restaurant has one table. That is it. No name, no menu. It has an eclectic offering to say the least. For dinner we ate rattlesnake, armadillo and deer, along with black beans, rice and homemade tortillas. And 5 ballenas of beer. Hey, therefood2 were 3 of us! We wobbled out to the car and then fell into bed. (The dogs would not touch the rattlesnake leftovers! Nature at work.)

Sunday morning saw us on the road to San Blas. We caffeinated before we took off and noon found us in Aticama, a pueblo on the coast south of San Blas. For lunch we had 2 dozen raw oysters and a grilled fish called Macho. They grilled it with the egg sacks inside, the roe. I go on record that I did in fact take a taste. And I swallowed it. Then ordered guacamole.

After lunch we headed north to San Blas. We stopped at La Playa Las Isilitas, at Luigi's moms restaurant. Martha has a huge palapa on the beach. She welcomed us with open arms and lead us willingly to the sleeping hamacahamacas where we crawled in for a nap. An hour or so later, refreshed and awake we took a long walk on the beach. We headed into the plaza in San Blas to find coffee and a sweet roll. There is a charming caf right on the plaza. We had our espressos and headed home.

By the time we were home, we were hungry again. (I think we have worms.) The last stop of the day was Mar Plata for a green salad, made perfectly by Lottie with truffle oil, and a glass of red wine.
A perfect weekend! Jason left Tuesday. I miss him already. Safe travels, primo.

Things I am thankful for: elastic waisted skirts, sunny warm naps on the beach, and perfect days surrounded by love. Cheers.

Blessings, Tamara

Some Benefits of Birding for the Mind

Series 3. Birding for the Soul.

During the past two weeks I have shared some of what I believe are potential benefits of birdwatching to the physical and mental health of those who practice this activity. Today, I would like to share what I feel are some of the more subtle benefits of birding;  such prophetbenefits can be reached and perceived simply by experiencing the beauty of nature and birds and are in my experience the main reason people become avid birders, even if they dont realize that as a matter of fact birding is a very nutritious food for human soul .

Observing birds and nature with a sense of contemplation allows being in the Present moment, this is, enables the observer to be in a state of mind where  he/she simply is. This can also be very relaxing for the mind if the observation (understood as mental process that involves a certain level of analysis) becomes contemplation (when the observer simply enjoys the present moment the way it is, with no judgment or expectations). Probably this is what makes the experience of birding most valuable: once the observer creates a connection with the natural world in the present moment.

Bird songs encourage musical harmony:  The harmony of bird song reaches deep into our ancestral DNA to recover feelings of joy that have comforted humans throughout the ages. It doesn't matter whether you know what bird is singing any more than whether you know what instrument is playing which tune in an orchestra.

The contact with nature in general encourages creativity and emotional balance. Very often people with or without artistic abilities are inspired to create art after/during contact with womanbycreek

nature. Also, while being in contact with nature negative emotions tend to dissolve and disappear, probably as a consequence of all the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of birding and enjoying nature all together.

So now you know more about all the benefits of a nature/birding walk and hopefully are inspired go for a nature walk or observe nature around you, you will experience yourself  all the benefits of connecting to nature.

Local San Pancho Band needs instruments and support!

Two years ago, a local mom was desperate to see that her teenage son and his friends had something to do.  She raised funds and instruments, found a talented teacher to come to San Pancho and started a musical band for teenage boys.  None of the kids had any prior musical training.   Today, two years later, the boys band, now known as El Tracadero, is still together and is sounding everyday more impressive.   The commitment of these kids and the dedication of Isabella and her family is remarkable.

The boys now have several instruments that need to be replaced including a Congo drum set, a clarinet, a tuba and a trombone (the valve kind).  entreAmigos is working to collect instruments or support from people specifically for this cause.  If you have an instrument that you can donate, please drop it by.  If you would like to contact us for more information please do so at

Aventuras de al Tierra por Mexico

 By Alana Mac

I have come across many new places and people during my last 2 months living along the Riviera Nayarit. For me, the immersion into a foreign physical environment, the blend of both built and natural, is always the most stimulating to my senses. The way in which a space transforms into a place through either natural evolution or its social manipulation by human presence, has become the spark of my intrigue as I come into these new experiences.  Through the medium of photography, I can attempt to capture the essence of those moments. The intoxication of my senses and the revelations of my mind are presented through the collection below.
Also, it may just be that I am not that great at photographing the spirit of human expression. Thus, once again, nature is my template.
