There have been some questions on the forum regarding resources for installing locks, safes and a security check on your home. It is important to use a locksmith/security professional. For any who do not know, Pete Wilson lives in Sayulita but advertises and supports both of our towns on SanPanchoLife.com, is an excellent resource for all of your needs.  You can find Pete by clicking here.

San Pancho Pro 2011
Successful year!
Local competitors reach the finals!

By Artemio Rosas

Among more than 70 competitors from Mexico, United States, Canada and Europe there were 3 representatives from Nayarit to reach the finals.

About two thousand spectators came to enjoy an atmosphere of camaraderie, the short board tournament and concerts that took place in at this location.  Riviera Nayarit, January 18, 2011 .

- More than 70 competitors from around the country, about two thousand spectators, a festive atmosphere free of alcohol and drugs, a concert with music that gave a great message to youth and above all, the best shortboard surfing that could be seen in Mexico, San Pancho held the Pro 2011, which took place in Riviera Nayarit on January 14th - 16th and in which the participation of Nayarit athletes was spectacular.

"The San Pancho Pro 2011 was a success, it was better than expected, as someone told us, it had a great start and a happy ending," said Artemio Rosas, Christianos Surf Team, who also organized this event where the Riviera Nayarit is the kick off place for a year of intense sports.

The tournament brought together surfers from Baja California, Guerrero, Colima, Nayarit and Jalisco, as well as some from the United States and Canada. But not only did 70 competitors participate, it was history in the making for a tournament to be held in this state, also the spectators also exceeded the expectations of the organizers, between 500 thousand and two thousand visitors were recorded during the days of competition.

                     surf 2
It was a party atmosphere, yet free of alcohol and drugs on the beaches, it was about harmony, a very valuable achievement for the organizers, despite the massive event, there was no conflict. "We acknowledge the work of the Navy of Mexico, the Tourism Police and Civil Protection, everyone did a great job to support us," said Rosas, who also highlighted the message sent to young DJ Pin, Rap-Tado and Povo, the musicians invited to the farewell concert.

             surf 3
During the competition, there was action and suspense. Artemio Rosas said the participation of Guillermo Cadena, an old wolf on the short board and one of the great legends of Mexican surf, managed only to reach the semifinals, pushed by the youth of other competitors, like his brother Diego.

Local competitors asserted their status as champions, two of the finalists come from Sayulita: Diego Cadena, Jos Jimnez "Ticus", Adan Hernandez and Julio Quinones, from Manzanillo were in a close battle with wave after wave. However, Adan Hernandez was the winner of a bag of 10 thousand dollars in prizes.

Seeking support

San Pancho Pro 2011, which included sponsorship of the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Riviera Nayarit, Niijima, Coca Cola and Nestl, was a success. We will try to make San Pancho Pro 2012 also exceed all expectations. This was a promise made by Artemio Rosas, who also invited the community to join efforts to promote surfing as a local sport in Riviera Nayarit.

"We want businesses and people in general take part in our association, because we would like the 2012 the San Pancho Pro to be even better, but also because there are many surfers who are excelling at international levels and require support. Our winner, Adan Hernandez, will take part in a very important competition next February in Hawaii ", she said.

"Giovani Cervantes and Patricio Gonzalez will travel to Panama in June to participate in the World Long Board.
There is much to achieve " he said.

1st place Adan Hernandez

2nd Place Jose Jimenez

3rd place Diego Chain

4th place Julio Quinones

Now my goal is to host tournaments at the same level throughout the country and if possible with a larger number of visitors, with the help of God and the media we will achieve this.

Notes from the Ranch

Do you ever have those days when you feel like your life is spinning out of control and no one has left the owner's manual for you? Well, the last two weeks have been like that for me. Between working, gardening, bossing (2 employees) (at which I am terrible), and life as I know it, my life is OUT OF CONTROL. I need to put the brakes on some of myout of control projects. But which projects? I'm having a brain freeze in the middle of writing my book, the gardens need my attention, the laundry breathes on it's own at night, I need signs for the Farmers Market, and I have not been to the gym in a month. Hello, Buns of Jello.

It is not a pretty picture at Rancho Milagro. I need a Mini-Me! Some one clone me! How do you do it, Nicole? I officially admit here and now that I am not Omnipotent. Nor will I ever be. And left to my own devices, I will fail. BUT....I can step back, works my steps, take a breath and make a list, or 2 or 3. Get my priorities straight, put my big girl pants on. I can ask for help, gulp. Oh, pride, what a wicked mistress you are!
So here is my plan to get my life back in control.Take some time for myself.  Make choices and stick to them. Turn it over. Fall down on my knees and pray. Ask for help from the Big Kahuna. Accept my limitations. I'm not 20 anymore. (Give or take a few decades.) I don't heal as fast as I used to. Falling off a horse hurts more now.  So if you see me on the street, be kind, I'm fragile right now. A hug is a good thing to share. My arms are wide open.

From the garden: tomatillos are slowly ripening and I will have some at Farmers Market on Saturday along with the usual goodies. Jason is a big help and he and I have concocted some lovely jams and jellies. We took a couple of plates of noshes to a dinner party last night and they were gone in minutes! Thank you Symon and Jackie for a fun evening in your incredible house!

I actually have ears of corn this year! Last year was a bust, no cross pollination. I'm looking forward to a big ear of corn dripping in butter. Yum. I may share...The herbs are growing like mad. Well, the herbs that theMule chickens don't like. They seem to stick to dill and parsley. The sunflowers are almost 2 meters tall and I'll have cut flowers at the Farmers Market.

Okay, off I go to breathe and take back my life. With help, of course.
Things I am thankful for: 12 step programs, girlfriends, the gift of laughing at myself, and you, my friends.

Blessings, Tamara

COSTA VERDE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL NOW ENROLLING FOR 7TH GRADE FOR 2011-2012

Costa Verde is an amazing place to educate your kids!  Since 2008, it's provided a bilingual and international experience for students from preschool thru 6th grades.    For the 2011-2012 school year, CVIS is currently recruiting a 7th grade class.  This class will lead CVIS in the expansion to a complete middle school over the next few years.
                              cvis 3

Many schools attempt to create a sense of community, but at Costa Verde, the small town qualities of life in bi-cultural Sayulita find expression in a rich, rewarding sense of togetherness.   The aim of CVIS is to produce healthy, happy and well-adjusted life-long learners. The hope is that each child acquires fluency in a second language and a profound understanding of the necessity for a "green" approach to living.   To achieve this, CVIS is dedicated to a small student to teacher ratio and has focused education on the whole child in an environment designed to develop the talents and skills particular to each individual.  Th school curriculum centers on ecology and respect for the environment.   Students learn to analyze and solve problems, rather than simply memorizing facts.  The school is accredited by SEP and also provides a green curriculum to all students, English and Spanish classes and a full range of after school activities.

If you have a son or daughter who is interested in this exciting middle school program, please contact the school at <[email protected]> by February 1st.  Please also feel free to contact us about enrollment in our preschool or elementary program for next year.  For more information about CVIS, please visit our website a :  www.colegiocostaverde.com

Some Benefits of Birding for the Mind

Series 2. Benefits for the Mind.

Last week I mentioned a few of the benefits of Birdwatching for the health of the physical body. Please keep in mind that I`m neither a physician nor a psychologist, however I`m expressing what I have experienced myself or experiences from people I have bird-watched with.

If we assume that since mind and body work together, whatever is truly beneficial for the body will, at some degree at least, be

Painted Bunting
Painted Bunting

positive for the mind as well. Today I would like to share some of the aspects that I have found to be very beneficial for the overall mental health.

Birding activates perceptual and analytical abilities. For instance, when looking at any particular bird we start to observe size, color pattern, shape, behavior, habitat, distinctive markings, etc. which helps us categorizing such bird in a certain group and ideally get to the specific name.  In my experience with children and teenagers once they start observing and with a little guidance on what to observe, this is a very easy benefit to observe, even kids with a short attention span can get very interested and observe incredible details.

Birding helps memorizing; with some practice it becomes easy to remember the distinctive characteristics of each bird species.   I have known of people who engage into their local birding clubs as a way to keep their minds active and their mental skills sharp and accurate. Ichildren in plaza birdwatching have known of some cases in which birding has helped preventing  Alzheim er syndrome.

When taken more seriously birding can be a way to practice studying skills. I recently met an adorable lady in her 70`s who is incredibly good at studying the birds of a certain area to such extent that whenev er `she`d see a bird in her list of possible species for the first time she knows exactly what it is, she does not need to look at the book, she had already studied it!

Well, I could keep going for weeks to come with this topic.  In the meantime let`s go birding and enhance our mental acuity!

Supporting the beautiful Vallarta Botanical Gardens and our diverse community!

By Glades Huizar

A couple of weeks ago on January 15th, San Pancho business owners were invited to take part in an important gathering of businesses and social organizations to help fundraiser for the Vallarta Botanical Gardens. While most of the business expo participants of the event are based mostly in the Puerto Vallarta and El Tuito area, three participating businesses from  North of the pv expo 1Bahia went to promote San Pancho as an attractive and charming destination  - Hotel Cielo Rojo (Bistro Organico), Tatehuari Jewelry and Huapango Gallery. A display of beautiful products from each business, town maps, promotion of local activities and organizations made for an attractive presentation of our town and what makes San Pancho an ideal place to visit, dine, shop  - an easy and worthwhile detour from the usual Vallarta tours.

Diversity Day is organized by the GoGayPuertoVallarta.com as a first of a series of events planned for the gay and lesbian community and its supporters - while at the same time creating fundraising events for non-profits like the Vallarta Botanical Gardens. According to the event coordinators (www.MyOwnConcierge.com.mx), "the day is a mix-in with the Garden's other weekend guests". This fun event brought new clients to the Gardens, with nearly 100 day participants enjoying the variety of activities (including a photography workshop, orchid and flower arrangement class, tortilla making, plus many traditional performances in the Garden's restaurant).  And, proudly representing a few businesses in San Pancho, the event served as a great way to introduce locals and visitors to head north (surprisingly, many of the folks we met have never been further north past Bucerias!) and experience our town and its many quality, unique offerings.pv expo 2

On behalf of Hotel Cielo Rojo (Bistro Organico), Huapango Gallery and Tatehuari Jewelry - Gracias Andrew, Logan and Paco for inviting our participation and hope that we can do other similarly meaningful events and include many other special folks in San

diversity day 1

Pancho!

Finally, if you have put off a visit to

the Vallarta Botanical Garden's, consider visiting soon. Easily accessible (just 12 miles south of Puerto Vallarta), the Garden is located on 20 acres - featuring over 3000 different species of plants and flowers.  Their staff is dedicated to the research and education of plant life - and creating a space to enjoy the beauty that nature offers. Simply enchanting, the Gardens is a perfect place to go in solitude, on a romantic date or an enjoyable family outing (the river runs right through the acreage ). Better yet, they're open 7 days a week and children under 10 are free!

Suggestion:  arrive early and lounge all day long among in the beauty of the Gardens, in the heart of this 'old-growth forest'.

Local San Pancho Band needs instruments and support!

Two years ago, a local mom was desperate to see that her teenage son and his friends had something to do.  She raised funds and instruments, found a talented teacher to come to San Pancho and started a musical band for teenage boys.  None of the kids had any prior musical training.   Today, two years later, the boys band, now known as El Tracadero, is still together and is sounding everyday more impressive.   The commitment of these kids and the dedication of Isabella and her family is remarkable.

The boys now have several instruments that need to be replaced including a Congo drum set, a clarinet, a tuba and a trombone (the valve kind).  entreAmigos is working to collect instruments or support from people specifically for this cause.  If you have an instrument that you can donate, please drop it by.  If you would like to contact us for more information please do so at

You can see the band at tonight's entreAmigos Birthday Bash!
