Interview with Polo Player
Rene Gomez Navarro

Interview by Tamara Bode

         Rene polo player

What do you do in San Pancho?
I live with my wife and sons in San Pancho. I love it here! It is very quiet and a wonderful place for kids.

Were you born in San Pancho?
No, I was born in Guadalajara. My parents moved the family to Sayulita when I was young.

How did you come to San Pancho?
My wife, Octavia, was living here. And I fell in love with the town and La Patrona Polo Club! Imagine! A polo club in the middle of the village! It is perfect. My sons and I can walk to the field and stables and check on the horses. It is a bit of nature.

What can you tell us about your riding at La Patrona?
It is very nice. And also very exciting. I had ridden before but Juan Jaime Velazquez really taught me what I needed to go to the next level. There is a wonderful dance between the exercise, the balance and the interplay between myself and my horses. And I can share this with my sons and teach them as they grow older.

What can you tell us about yourself?
Well, I own a business with Octavia in Sayulita, Break Fast, on the beach. I love going to work every day because there are so many different people that come and sit and have a cup of coffee or a meal. People from Punta de Mita, local surfers, visiting surfers checking the waves. We are open all day so you can have breakfast and coffee in the morning, a snack or lunch mid-day and a mug of tap beer and an appetizer at sunset after being on the beach all day. We have WIFI too.

How do you see San Pancho in comparison to how it was before, culturally, socially, economically?
We are in a much better position now! I like the cultural events, the art shows. And there is always something to do with my kids. We can expose them to many new things with the Art Walks, Farmers Market, the Collectivo, Entre Amigos and Escuela de Mundo. And we have so many trees in town with birds in them!  People take care of the environment in San Pancho with recycling and trash polo saddlescollection, it is very clean.

Why do you think people visit La Patrona Polo Club?
Horses, normally people love horses. Polo makes people believe in their dreams to improve their lives, that they can do good things some day. With the club in the middle of town, everyone can come and see the horses, the nature, touch the animals.

Your dreams for San Pancho?
Well, more teams at the Polo Club! I want to double the amount of players we have now! Everyone is welcome to come and take riding lessons. I dream of more of the same quality that I have in my life now. And a good future for my sons.

Benefits of Birding for the Body, Mind and Soul

Series One: Benefits for the Body:

In my experience Birdwatching is an activity with multiple benefits of the health of the body, mind and soul of thMan and scopeose of us who practice it. If we look at this activity from a common sense perspective, we can realize that just being outdoors looking at birds and nature could bring some benefits to the overall health and well-being of people who practice.

In this first series of articles I would like to share with you my opinion and perception regarding the multiple benefits to the physical body that I have experienced myself or seen through people I gone birdwatching with.

          Bird watchin stream

Circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems: these are probably the most immediately benefited by the birding activity.  From the simple fact of lifting your binoculars up and facing upwards to look (or search) for birds, the circulatory and respiratory systems are activated. All of the internal "wiring" of the human body goes thru the neck, so that simple fact of lifting your arms and facing upwards for at least 30 seconds is already bringing a lot of benefits to the nervous and circulatory system that are easy to feel.  When doing this we automatically start breathing deeply since we are doing what is called a "hyper-extension" that helps the air to travel faster into the lungs and by doing so, aerates the brain. Another (more subtle) aspect I often see is how people develop a sense of balance and sensorial awareness as they practice birdwatching which come from paying attention to the sounds and movement as well as focusing the eyes onto a specific  spot. At least for me, the exercise of birding helps me relaxing my ocular muscles, especially after continued hours of computer work.

Muscular and bone systems: the benefits to these systems come normally when doing an outdoors walk to nature (which normally has cleaner air which helps to maximize the benefits mentioned above).  bird watching on beach

So I will continue with this topic next week. In the meantime I encourage you to grab your bins and go for a walk to nature so you can experience the benefits of birding  yourself or contact me to go on a birdwalk together!

Luis Morales is a Marine Biologist, Director and Founder of the San Pancho Birding Club, and Owner of Birding SanLuis Morales Pancho. Luis has vast experience on leading nature tours both in land and aquatic habitats. He has lived in San Pancho for 3 years and has become not only a frequent and avid observer of the local birds and nature but also an educational resource for our community and an environmental activist to help in preserving and restoring natural habitats.

Notes from the Ranch

It is a chilly time at the ranches. The cows and horses are growing winter coats. And I'm bundled up in sweaters, rebozos and boobiker bootsts. I even bought myself a new pair of black boots this week! They are more biker than cowboy but I am loving wearing them with dresses!

I've had an overabundance of arugula this week and have been hiding it in all sorts of dishes! First I made arugula and roasted almond pesto. Then sauteed arugula and beets. Then I tried to blend it into a juice smoothie. Not a good idea. I couldn't even get it down. Then there was the arugula and edam cheese fritatta. Then the rest went to the hens. I was turning green! What am I going to do with all of the tomatillos?
Family is still at Rancho Milagro. It has been a wonderful month of catching up. Tam and jason

I had a bit of a scare the other morning! I was in the garden with my primo, Jason, drinking coffee and the police showed up looking very serious and professional. I thought that maybe Foghorn Leghorn the missing rooster was in trouble. But no, the nice gentlemen asked my name and then one of them said that he had hurt his shoulder arresting someone this last weekend and was wondering if I could help him! After a shoulder treatment and adjustment on the living room floor he was good to go. I told him no charge, no worries. Then, and truth is stranger than fiction, he says that the next time I'm drinking and driving, no worries. Making points with the local cops! Rest assured I won't drink and drive!

I've planted more types of mint, another thyme plant and a new type of passion fruit vine that is supposed to have sweeter fruit. The darned hens ate all of my dill shoots so I'll reseed in the walled-in garden. I was so looking forward to potato salad with fresh dill! I hope their eggs taste like dill!

The tomatoes are still green but getting bigger all of the time. The colder than normal weather, 51 last night, has slowed every plant down. But no need to water as much. I'll have to be patient. (Not going to happen).

Farmers Market is growing little by little. We had a great turnout of vendors and customers last weekend. More vendors coming this Saturday! I'll have salsa, marmalade, balsamic onions and something sweet and decadent. See you there!

Things I am thankful for: socks, time alone, kisses in the shower and family.

Blessings, Tamara

COSTA VERDE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL NOW ENROLLING FOR 7TH GRADE FOR 2011-2012

Costa Verde is an amazing place to educate your kids!  Since 2008, it's provided a bilingual and international experience for students from preschool thru 6th grades.    For the 2011-2012 school year, CVIS is currently recruiting a 7th grade class.  This class will lead CVIS in the expansion to a complete middle school over the next few years.
                              CVIS school room photo

Many schools attempt to create a sense of community, but at Costa Verde, the small town qualities of life in bi-cultural Sayulita find expression in a rich, rewarding sense of togetherness.   The aim of CVIS is to produce healthy, happy and well-adjusted life-long learners. The hope is that each child acquires fluency in a second language and a profound understanding of the necessity for a "green" approach to living.   To achieve this, CVIS is dedicated to a small student to teacher ratio and has focused education on the whole child in an environment designed to develop the talents and skills particular to each individual.  Th school curriculum centers on ecology and respect for the environment.   Students learn to analyze and solve problems, rather than simply memorizing facts.  The school is accredited by SEP and also provides a green curriculum to all students, English and Spanish classes and a full range of after school activities.

If you have a son or daughter who is interested in this exciting middle school program, please contact the school at <[email protected]> by February 1st.  Please also feel free to contact us about enrollment in our preschool or elementary program for next year.  For more information about CVIS, please visit our website a :  www.colegiocostaverde.com
