 entreAmigos Scholarship Program |
Guadalupe Say: "I want all my children to have the opportunity to study. The oldest is in preparatory and to attend school, he takes a bus to Bucerias and pays 30 pesos every day ($2.5). We can´t afford the bus fare
For the last three years the Scholarship Program has been supporting my children economically, but it has also been helpful for my kids to motivate them, to keep studying and to make them do their best in school!"
Guadalupe dice: "Quiero que todos mis hijos tengan la oportunidad de estudiar, él más grande está en la preparatoria, para llegar a su escuela, tiene que tomar un autobús a Bucerias y pagar 30 pesos todos los días. Nosotros no podemos pagarlos.
El programa de becas de entreamigos, nos ha apoyado los últimos tres años a lograrlo, además de ayudarnos económicamente, le ha servido a mis hijos para motivarse, seguir estudiando y echarle ganas en su escuela! "

By: Escuela del Mundo All of us at Escuela del Mundo wish you all the best as we celebrate another new year! On December 20th, students, parents and friends of Escuela del Mundo celebrated our annual tradition "Buenas Deseos" - a special time for planting another tree in the school's garden. Written in colored paper, "wishes of the children" are planted along with the tree. They wish for themselves, their families and the universe -- "hope everyone will learn to save water!" , "wish for my new baby brother to be healthy" and "hope for another Transformer toy this year!" were some of the kind wishes written by the students. After the ceremony of planting the tree, we all enjoyed presentations of both elementary and preschool groups. Elementary students performed their Recorder interpretation of "mary had a little lamb" . They had prepared the song after weeks of music classes - for most of them, this was the first time ever to play this instrument. They were incredible! The Preschool students were equally impressive with an English song, guided by their language teacher, Karoul. Our little ones sang in their new language and wowed the crowd of proud parents!
Thank you to all the donors of our RAFFLE gifts. As usual, its the most fun part of the day. Thanks to all of you who purchased raffle tickets - helping us raise much needed funds. Here's a list of our friends who donated gifts this year: Unique Kites from Jeremy - Vestido Makaria de Azul - Medusa Restaurant en Sayulita - Breakfast at Nopalitos - Mika "Yoga-massage" session - Alexandra's home-made tortilla soup - Villa Esperanza en San Pancho - Arte de Ariel Sainz - Recycled glass set from Entreamigos - Brian's Clase en Mar Adentro - Sayulita Fish Taco - Chocobanana - Burrito Revolucion - Masage de Octavia Jolley - Zapatitos Magicos de Ocatoli - Plantas tropicales de Manuel Maassen - home made dessert by Elena - Un kit de aromaterapia de Darrin - Canasta de productos para masaje y hierbas medicinales de Tamara's Harmonia Spa - Panchitos Bar - Thai yoga body work de Cori Levin - Pintura Huichol de Cori Jacobs y Petit Hotel HAFA de Sayulita From all of us, HAPPY NEW YEAR - may it be filled with joy, inspiration and peace! And, we look forward to seeing all our students again on the 10th!

entreAmigos RECICLA SHOP
|
By: Alana Mac
The week before Christmas marked a momentous accomplishment for the San Pancho organization, entreamigos, as the community welcomed The Recicla Shop into the radical, supportive landscape of the non-profit community center. The Shop opened its doors at a highly anticipated opening event to celebrate the expansion of entreamigos' resources and the organization's mission of environmental stewardship as they bring recycled, local products to the community members. The store will carry an array of gently used clothes and housewares for all members of the family at reasonable prices. Entreamigos organizers and the financial benefactors, XOCODIVA Artican Chocolates and the Victoria Women in Need Society, believe that the new resource will foster a greater sense of agency for all of San Pancho's citizens as they revitalize their local economy and the self sustaining capacity of their cultural community center, entreamigos.
I was involved with this transformative process as the store was collecting donations weeks prior to the opening, the space was coming into its own as a reputable, professional place, and the entire community was coming together to set up for the opening event and fashion show. I aided the organizers through every step of the process, which were extremely invaluable lessons in entrepreneurship, small business management, and basic skills of resourcefulness. I witnessed the space from its roots with a freshly painted artistic facade come into a fully functioning self sustaining business within 10 days. Here's the photographic evidence to prove it.

Here is a beautiful tree mural painted by members of the Victoria Women in Need Society from Victoria, B.C., Canada whom have established a very successful chain of secondhand boutique stores in the Victoria metro area that sponsors local women in need. Now, they are expanded their grasps by being the major benefactors of The Recicla Shop project.
The beginning.....all the furniture and fixtures were recycled from other businesses or from the site itself.
The store opened two days after this photo was taken.
The product goes out.....and the kids are already scoping out the scene.
Within a few short days its ready for opening!
Wow, it was stunning!
----- OPENING NIGHT The representatives of Victoria Women in Need Society and entreamigos pull the curtains during the grand inauguration!
And here they come....! The Store was well applauded and received by the community. There was even a huge profit margin made within the 2 hours on opening night, and it was only the beginning!
The community members gather as the fashion show nears. The show was organized to showcase the fun yet functional elements of the Recicla Shop's clothing and athletic equipment. Of course I couldn't be left in the dust! I adorned an exotic, playful frock that accessorized my tango, eastern Indian, and salsa dance number I performed on the catwalk! It was a great night and a fabulous beginning for a landmark amongst the San Pancho community.
When you contribute gently used clothes, housewares, toys, beach gear and other items to entreAmigos you directly support our educational projects and programs. If you are in town please consider cleaning out your closets, kitchen and store rooms and if you are soon to visit from elsewhere please consider the extra cost of a bag on the airplane as a well worth it contribution towards the education of the children of San Pancho.
The new Recicla Shop store is open 10-6 Monday thru Friday and 10-2 Saturday.
CLEAN YOUR CLOSET... AND BRING YOUR STUFF TO RECICLA SHOP! Gently used clothes, housewares, decorations, etc... are all very welcome. Children's clothes and toys are especially needed. |

The San Pancho's Estuary's Health Condition? |
It is a common question I`m frequently asked. My answer is: it depends on how we want to evaluate the health of this ecosystem. The multiple possible answers are as relative just as most things in this world...
I understand when people ask me this they want to hear a simple answer from my personal point of view as a frequent bird-life observer at this place.
In order to get a clearer understanding of this complicated question I believe we can first state the limits of the ecosystem (the estuary), in this case our subject of study. Then we can look at the chemical aspects of it, the biological aspects, the physical aspects, the social and economic systems related to it; consider the different interactions between the multiple variables and then put them all together and get a board of specialists in each subject to discuss the different opinion and the submit an opinion on state of health of the estuary... in other words get a scientific analysis!.
Even doing so, there might be different points of view and it might be difficult to get a common opinion, as it frequently happens in the scientific world.
At a personal level I like to believe that the health of the estuary is good the facts being it supports life continuously; in the case of birds they can be sustained season after season or year round and they seem healthy plus we have a large diversity and abundance of bird life occurring all year round.
In any case, I consider this is a wonderful ecosystem that deserves to be valued as a source of biodiversity and as a provider of multiple environmental services. I believe as a human community living around the estuary we can do a lot to help preser ving and restoring it. How? by using biodegradable soaps, avoid chemical products that might flow down the river or towards the treatment plant, keep the river clean... in other words give attention and develop (even more) the environmental awareness of the important services this wonderful ecosystem provides. With this in mind we can hope the current and future generations enjoy the San Pancho estuary as it is or even better!
Luis Morales is a Marine Biologist, Director and Founder of the San Pancho Birding Club, and Owner of Birding San Pancho. Luis has vast experience on leading nature tours both in land and aquatic habitats. He has lived in San Pancho for 3 years and has become not only a frequent and avid observer of the local birds and nature but also an educational resource for our community and an environmental activist to help in preserving and restoring natural habitats.

Notes from the Ranch
| Cowboy Coffee! I'm all about Cowboy Coffee these cold mornings. A big cuppa´ joe boiled on the stove, my sweater and boots, and nothing slows me down. I'm out early in the garden with the hens. The rooster has taken a walkabout. I have an All Points Bulletin out for him. His name is Foghorn Leghorn. I really don't want to trim his wings nor lock him in the chicken coop but he is going to be in a serious time out when he comes back. I hope he comes back...either that or one of my neighbors had a beautiful pot of chicken and dumplings. He is so big that there must be at leat 4 kilos of meat on him. Finger and toes crossed that he is only out visting the neighboring hens.
Polo this Saturday at 6:00pm! Please come and watch the local players. And I hear there is a dance group, flamenco, that is performing. I'll see you there! Well, I'll see you but you probably won't see me; I am always on the stable side of the field!
Thank you to everyone that came to San Pancho Farmers Market last Saturday. Such beautiful smiling faces. This week I'll have more salsa, squash butter and baked goods. And of course, Nico's amazing Thai coffee. I'm hooked.
Please go to the Sayulita Farmers Market on Fridays, too. They have lost their wonderful space in la Casa de Cultura but are holding the market on the street infront of the building. Our sister village needs our support. Let's hope they are allowed back in or find another spot soon. We are so lucky to have this beautiful plaza here in San Pancho. For so many years it has sat unused except for Saturday night disco. (Thank God for earplugs.) Our goal is to bring energy and life into the plaza with events. Yes, the market is small and hidden in the corner but the location is spectacular. Under the big trees, big arches, laughter, what more? If you want to make something and bring it down, we welcome you with open arms! Even if it just for one Saturday. Come and joing us. Signs will be put up as soon as we have the design. Anyone want to design a sign?
Rancho Milagro is still filled with family and friends. I don't think I've laughed so hard in months! Late evenings, old memories and good humored teasing make for a wonderful life. And today, I am going to have coffee with a friend that I've not seen in 18 years! Jeannie called yesterday out of the blue. I can't wait to catch up.
Life is good, time passes and things change. Change is good, right? That is one thing we can count on, change. I used to have a sign in my kitchen that said, "Change is Stability". My dear, sweet precocious son would take it out of the frame and separate the words. So sometimes it would say, "Is Change Stability?", Is Stability Change?". Too cute for his own good.
There are a lot of activities in San Pancho these days. Please attend the Farmers Market, Friday Art Walk and of course, the Saturday night Polo matches. And Entre Amigos has ongoing courses and workhops. Be well, be strong, be clear in words, thoughts and deeds.
Things I am thanful for: electric space heaters, sunny days, and naps.
Blessings, Tamara
