Christmas Bird Count in San Pancho?
|
Today I want to share a Little bit of history of one of the North American traditions I feel proud to have adopted: The Christmas Bird Count. Given the hurry of these days I did some exhaustive
 | Frank Chapman |
online research (of about 45 seconds) to share with you this text taken fro the Audubon Society website:
"Prior to the turn of the (20th) century, people engaged in a holiday tradition known as the Christmas "Side Hunt": They would choose sides and go afield with their guns; whoever brought in the biggest pile of feathered (and furred) quarry won.
Conservation was in its beginning stages around the turn of the 20th century, and many observers and scientists were becoming concerned about declining bird populations. Beginning on Christmas Day 1900, ornithologist Frank Chapman, an early officer in the then budding Audubon Society, proposed a new holiday tradition-a "Christmas Bird Census" that would count birds in the holidays rather than hunt them.
So began the Christmas Bird Count. Thanks to the inspiration of Frank M. Chapman and the enthusiasm of twenty-seven dedicated birders, twenty-five Christmas Bird Counts were held that day. The locations ranged from Toronto, Ontario to Pacific Grove, California with most counts in or near the population centers of northeastern North America. Those original 27 Christmas Bird Counters tallied around 90 species on all the counts combined."
It is worth mentioning that after 110 years is a worldwide tradition!
Well. Last week we did our Christmas Bird Count on December 20th to 22nd and during the three days we counted the great number of 65 species just around the San Pancho area!

Birding has been incredibly good this year. Please tune up your senses and go out and enjoy the amazing bird fauna of San Pancho. Next week I will give you some good info on areas to go birding in San Pancho as well as some info on community birding days.
Happy New Years and Happy Birding Days!!!

Notes from the Ranch
| I admit it, okay? I'm still listening to Christmas music. I love Christmas music. I listen to it year ´round. And I'm driving family and friends nuts with it! All I have to say is: Scrooges!
Christmas music makes me homesick for snow, pine trees, candy canes and hot cocoa. But then I look at the space heater I have cranked on in my bedroom here, the layers of clothes I wear to sunset at the beach and realize that I just don't have what it takes for a snowy, white Christmas anymore. I'm not tough enough. I won't even go to Guadalajara this time of year. I'm a beach wimp.
I made a traditional Christmas feast this year. Turkey, stuffing with roasted chestnuts, sweet potatoes, the works. I could almost hear t he Martha Stewart theme song playing in the background. Hey, you can call me Marta Garcia, the Martha Stewart of Mexico. My theme song will be "Bèsame". Thank you to Buc and Gail for the wine and good company. And Enrique for doing the dishes and not asking for tortillas and chiles. Gracias, Mi Amor. Dessert was a flourless chocolate torte and champagne. Yum. No calories involved at all... The dogs were in hog heaven with scraps. They want nothing to do with their dried kibbles today. What have I started?
The weather has helped the garden, long cool nights to slowly grow vegetables. I'm warning all of you, get ready for tomatillos. And cucumbers. The passion fruit just keep on setting fruit. Mar Plata and Cafe del Mar are making passion fruit mojitos. Stop by and try one. I dropped a bunch of bananas at La Perla for their new fruit smoothies, too. Check out their new healthy menu. Homemade breads, too. The chickens must have put out a call to all friends near and far as I now have about 10 hens that have moved in and I have no idea where they came from! If you are missing any girls, let me know. So far lots of eggs. Maybe we'll see some little ones running around soon. I love the sound of hens and roosters. They have so much to say. I swear they gossip about each other.
Not much new on the ranch this week. Slow, lovely days filled with family and friends. The cows are getting fat and Sr. Memo Flechas is making sure we have lots of little calves in the summer. Life goes on, the sun rises and the sun sets. The laundry gets done, the bills paid, hugs are shared and all is good.
Things I am thankful for: this deep abiding peace that fills my heart, the beauty of my life and you, my friends. Prospero Año Nuevo.
Blessings, Tamara
