San Pancho What's Going On - Roving Reporter on the Beat!
| By Barbara Kirkwood
Safety Meeting Update: On Tuesday December 14th, One hundred San Panchino's (both Mexican and Gringo) appeared for a meeting at entreAmigos about Promoting Safety in San Pancho. Two State police officials, Two Municipal police officials and American Consular Agent, Kelly Trainer attended.
Topics included ways to continue to keep San Pancho a safe haven for both visitors and residents, information on how to prevent and report any criminal activity and a plethora of proof that there has been absolutely no drug lord activity in these parts.
It was a great show of community -- everyone working together -- Mexicans, North Americans, Police -- to show that San Pancho deserves its reputation as the jewel of Riviera Nayarit.
OXXO Meeting Update:
This week a group of Four town representative (Three Locals and One American -- Nicole Swedlow) met with representatives of OXXO on Wednesday to discuss the OXXO store location plans. OXXO is trying to be community friendly and graciously listened to our concerns. We have expressed our welcome to OXXO as a member of our community and they have expressed a desire to "do no harm". We are exploring alternative sites for their store with them and they appear to be receptive. Hopefully we will have a deal within a week or so, keep tuned. entreAmigos Second Hand Store Grand Opening:
Also on December 16th, Entre Amigos had their grand reveal of their first project to obtain self sustainability -- they showcased their new second-hand store to the delight of hundreds of Locals and Gringos. The store was a huge hit and I think they were sold out by the end of the evening. A nice bar was subsidized by Panchitos bar, delicious and unique handmade tamales made by Adriana Basail were sold and incredible chocolates were available from Xocodiva Artisan Chocolates (who also were instrumental in helping entreAmigos set up their second hand store). After the entreAmigos event, many of the attendees wandered across the street to Panchitos where they danced till midnight as the band Juan-Ted (which includes our own local, Geno Lampier) provided a rollicking good time. The dancing went on till well after midnight and a grand time was had by all! What's Going on: Every Tuesday night there is an incredible Cuban band rocking from 6- 8 on the beach at La Playa restaurant. The weather has been great for this evening event, causing everyone to hop up and try out a few salsa steps. |
 entreAmigos Scholarship Program |
This school year marks the 4th year entreAmigos has provided scholarships to deserving and needy San Pancho students.
Over 130 students applied for assistance and based on the stringent requirements nearly 50% qualified and 55 children were accepted into the program.
Now we need to cover their expenses and need YOUR help!
A basic requirement is a verified financial need; the students must have a qualifying minimum mark of 8, a B average, and they must participate in entreAmigos functions, community involvement and after-school programs.

5th Annual Art Festival
of San Pancho (COLECTIVO SAN PANCHO)
THIS WEEKEND MARKS THE OPENING OF DECEMBER'S ART AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES AROUND TOWN - Starting Saturday at the upcoming Inauguration at Bodega 3!! At the Bodega 3, festival volunteers are working day in and day out in the last details for the Art Exhibit of local artist Ariel Sainz and the inauguration event for this year's San Francisco Art Festival. The Bodega 3 is yet another warehouse being re-utilized by local innovative residents creating wonderful art and cultural experiences for all. The opening reception is open to the public at 6:00 pm this Saturday December 18th, with appetizers, chocolate and tequila. Courtesy of Cafe del Mar, Tekari and Hotel Cielo Rojo - who also invites the public to their charming patio restaurant "Bistro Organico" with a special night of "tequila tasting" in the same evening. The weekend continues with a unique public performance by Cuban artist Angel Delgado whose one-man show will travel from the town entrance to the Malecon. Arriving at the Malecon at 4:00pm, this is a must-see event for those who love surprises and innovative street theater pieces. At the Malecon, you will also enjoy the various exhibits at the Restaurant Las Palmas, La Perla and an art installation in the Malecon area with music. So, this Sunday promises to be quite a treat. Come experience contemporary art and enjoy San Pancho's relaxing beach culture. Back in town at entreAmigos will open its gallery for the exhibit of Jalisco artist, Dalila Perez, who will also be offering painting classes to the public (visit entreAmigos for details).
Continuing the Festival activities, nightly Film Screenings at Bodega 3 will be open to the public at 8:00 PM from December 20 through 23. This is an opportunity to see international films and documentaries related to the festival theme: Borders and Bridges. Also, El Estar Yoga Center will host (also from 20th through 23rd of December) meditation classes and medicinal tea tastings for the public. All activities are open and free to the public.
Local stores and restaurants are also active participants in this year's Art Festival. On December 22, Cafe Arte welcomes Chilean artist in his exposition of "los 33" a mixed media installation which runs throughout the Festival dates. Maria's shop "Folklore" will host a group show of local arts and crafts by the "Women of San Pancho". This is a special opportunity to view and support the traditional craft of many women native to the area. Folklore expo begins on December 23. On the same day, similar to the local Art Walk, you can stroll over to the Galeria Huapango (Ramon's gallery/shop) to see the "chaquira - huichol beading" art of Ramiro Gonzales. Across the street at the new restaurant Dolce Amore, owner Angelica Serna shows her collection of art pieces, mostly painted art objects. San Pancho is a special place where we can all enjoy being part of a creative, innovative and cooperative community. Enjoy!
It is also the time of the year when we look forward to the re-opening of our favorite restaurants (and there are many!) . And, it's exciting when we discover new spots appearing around town. At this year's Festival de Arte, you will have a chance to experience delicious appetizers provided by participating restaurants at many of the art shows as well as vendors selling traditional food in the Plaza. The collaboration between art, culture and cuisine is truly enjoyable and reflects this unique spirit that makes our town special. In fact, the opening event on December 18th (Bodega 3) for the exhibit of Ariel Sainz "Rastros de una Genesis" will not only delight the visual sensibilities but the culinary ones as well. With a reception that includes appetizers from Cafe del Mar and Tekari, fresh fruit sangria, mexican chocolate desserts and tequila (from Hotel Cielo Rojo), it is an evening not to be missed. San Pancho Spay & Neuter Clinic
| By Alana Mac: Alan is currently living in San Pancho follow her blog at http://thenautilustemplate.blogspot.com
It's inspiring to witness people coming together within a community to work for a pivotal cause, but it's an even greater success when the act addresses and resolves a very visual and prevalent issue for every party involved. The excess of stray dogs and cats in Mexico and across the globe has been a growing issue and is rarely addressed within developing nations. Along the Riviera Nayarit, the dog and cat populations are exponentially increasing due to a lack of appropriate sterilization methods, and thus the spread of diseases and malnutrition has plagued these poor animals as they continue to reproduce new generations that will disappear into the shadows. Fortunately, there has been a group of gringos and Mexicans in San Pancho and Lo de Marcos who have mobilized with traveling Mexican veterinarians to organize biannual clinics. These veterinarians form PEACE travel throughout Mexico to volunteer their time and in turn receive an array of experience(they are usually young vets), while the people of the town, foreign and national alike, volunteer their time to administer the endless logistics of the week long clinic. At these functions, dogs and cats will be either be spayed or neutered, and are able to receive any sort of medical attention necessary. This is an essential resource for these towns to ensure their animal's health and happiness, and the prosperity of the overall community. I was able to volunteer at San Pancho's clinic this past week while hundreds of dogs and cats passed through the transformed community center's resource room as the quantity and quality of canine and feline life in the town was revolutionized. Below is an assortment of photos in order for you to relive such an inspiring gathering of people and energy.
A little chihuahua was being neutered. The calm and kind demeanor of the vet reminded me of my grandfather who was a vet in Baker County, Oregon for 40+ years. Grandpa Bill was always eager to help any animal in need and did so with loving care. Another very inspiring and compassionate mover and shaker!
This litter guy had been in a dog fight earlier in the week and lost an eye. The vets were able to successfully operate and stitch the socket back up, so he will never have to be live with an agonizing infection. He is just waking up as sweet volunteers look after him lovingly.

Barbara is nurturing the chihuahua as he wakes up. He was in surgery in the first photo.
Here is the recover station as the chihuahua is awoken and cats are fast asleep behind him. Cats take 5+ hours to come out of anesthesia. There have been no casualties during these clinics nor have there been any negative reactions to their presence and impact upon the communities. It was an amazing mobilization of people and animals to be a part of!

Kites in San Pancho | By Karen Fredrichs
Look, up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's a KITE! A glorious kite, like the one you loved as a kid, flying high up in the San Pancho skies. The colorful art that is created above the sand and sea attracts the birds who swarm, follow and dive around them making it a storybook beach scene. This is a scene that will be part of the fabric of the San Pancho culture this season and hopefully for time beyond that.
The San Pancho Aire kites are designed, and detailed by San Pancho residents and sewn by local women with an unparalleled expertise. There are four designs at present, all pretested for flying abilities, and are built with the finest quality of imported rip stop nylon, light weight hollow fiberglass tubing for all spars, and brass grommets. Most fun of all are the burlap bags that the kites are packaged in for ease of transport with leather tags to identify the style and colors.
So when you return to San Pancho this year, be sure to look up in the sky, then follow the single line down to the hands of someone who will hand one over to you to try and rediscover one of the simple pleasures of life. What's not to love about that?
More often now, soon you will be hearing "go fly a kite" in San Pancho and you can!

About Bird Slang & Popular Birding Expressions
|
It is interesting to find how the concept "bird" is used in different cultures in the most varied contexts. Here are some examples of how people refer to birds in Mexican (and Latin American cultures) and some of this expressions and saying may also apply for other cultures as well:
"Más vale pájaro en mano que dos volando" -
"One bird in the hand is worthier than two flying"; meaning that is better to assure one issue rather than trying to assure two or more issues at the same time.
There is also a more aggressive one that drives me nuts and people are learning not to say around me:
"Matar dos pájaros de un tiro" "To kill two birds with one shot"; this expression is used when someone can achieve two goals with the effort of one goal.
"Dando y dando pajarito volando" Which basically applies whenever there is a transaction and the persons involved give and take their part of the deal at the same moment.
In UK English the word Bird is also used to describe a girl or woman considered sexually attractive, as used by men.
"Él o ella anda pajareando" Literally means "He/She is birding" Is an expression that applies when someone seems distracted or with little attention and is the one I always prefer to use.
So, vamonos a pajarear or Let`s go birding!!!!
Luis Morales is a Marine Biologist, Director and Founder of the San Pancho Birding Club, and Owner of Birding San Pancho. Luis has vast experience on leading nature tours both in land and aquatic habitats. He has lived in San Pancho for 3 years and has become not only a frequent and avid observer of the local birds and nature but also an educational resource for our community and an environmental activist to help in preserving and restoring natural habitats.

Notes from the Ranch
| Here is a salute to all of the workers of our world. The people that harvest the crops, take care of the babies, collect the garbage, sweep the streets, sort the recycling, clean the houses, and work in the fields.
TO BE OF USE The people I love the best jump into work head first Without dallying in the shallows and swim off with sure strokes almost out of sight.
They seem to become natives of that element the black sleek heads of seals bouncing like half-submerged balls.
I love people who harness themselves, an ox to a heavy cart, who pull like water buffalo, with massive patience, who strain in the mud and muck to move things forward, as to be done, again and again.
I want to be with people who submerge in the task, who go in to the fields to harvest and work in a row and pass the bags along, who are not parlor generals and field deserters but move in a common rhythm when the food must come in or the fire be put out.
The work of the world is common as mud. Botched, it smears the hands, crumbles to dust But the thing worth doing well done has a shape that satisfies, clean and evident. Greek amphora's for wine or oil, Hopi vases that held corn, are put in museums but you know they were made to be used. The pitcher cries for water to carry and a person for work that is real. Marge Piercy, Reprinted by permission.
Things I am thankful for: the written word, birds singing, the stars at night and good honest hard work.
Blessings, Tamara
