Greetings 562 San Pancho Newsletter Readers,

Welcome to this weeks newsletter. The town is getting busy, there are a lot of activities going on.  The Vallarta Puente Ameca bridge opened up last Wednesday making it much easier for all of us to travel back and forth and the visitors to San Pancho will not face delays from the airport.

The bridge supports for San Pancho bridge should be arriving in the next few days.  Look for an update from the Judge next week.

As we approach the holidays, the season's celebrations have begun and the upcoming Lady of Guadalupe day kicks off on December 12th. Every night at 6 pm there is a Rosary for the Lady of Guadalupe at the church by the Town Plaza.

Make sure and visit the Calendar often to find out about the different events such as Art Walk; Art Festival starting December 18th, and the Polo Matches, movie nights at Panchito's just to name a few.

The meet and greet last night was attended by 35 local business owners and homeowners.  The food was fabulous and MarPlata was a beautiful setting for the event.  Thank you for coming and sharing all of your ideas.

As a reminder, the San Pancho Friday Night Art Walks continue every Friday night, come out and enjoy a great night of art, wine. There are several new businesses participating. Please check out the calendar for details.

We had the PEACE organization in town this week running the annual spay and neuter clinic.  It continues until tomorrow.  Thank you for those of you who contributed to this great event and for continuing to support the efforts to have less strays dogs and cats in our village.   I will have an interview next week in La Voz with Paulina from PEACE who is the head vet technician.

The Turtles are still being released every evening around 6:15 pm by Grupo Ecologico de la Costa Verde.  See the calendar for the locations and come out and support this great effort.

There has been a group of concerned citizens working with the OXXO to find a more suitable location for the new store that will open in San Pancho in the near future. More to come on this and thank you for your time and efforts.

There will be a town hall meeting on December 14th at 11 am at entreAmigos concerning the ongoing safety for homeowners and tourists.  The American Consulate official, the State Police and representatives from Bahia de Banderas will be in attendance.  The meeting will be held in both English and Spanish, plan to attend for more information.  For more information see Nicole at entreAmigos.

Please provide feedback if there are things you would like to see in the weekly newsletter.

If you would like to write for us or submit photos, please contact me directly at Sandy@SanPanchoLife.com.

Thanks for reading this week!  The # of visitors to the site continue to increase!  Thank you for continuing to promote our village.

5th Annual Art Festival of San Pancho (Colectivo San Pancho)

festival

5th Annual Art Festival

of San Pancho (COLECTIVO SAN PANCHO)

With only a week left before the SinergiArte Festival kick-off event in the Bodega 3, festival organizers are thrilled to announce their full program of events and performances (www.colectivosanpancho.blogspot.com).

As we promised, each week we'll send reminders of what is going on around town in various restaurants and galleries. See below for details about the first few days of the festival.

Those of you who have lived in San Pancho awhile know that this time of the year is always a busy one filled with amazing traditional and cultural happenings_a special characteristic of San Pancho that always impresses both residents and visitors. Between the upcoming entreAmigos holiday events, local school activities and fundraisers, the church's holiday schedule and the festivities programmed in the Festival de Arte, there are many interesting opportunities to celebrate the holidays and to welcome the start of the next high season.

It is also the time of the year when we look forward to the re-opening of our favorite restaurants (and there are many!) . And, it's exciting when we discover new spots appearing around town. At this year's Festival de Arte, you will have a chance to experience delicious appetizers provided by participating restaurants at many of the art shows as well as vendors selling traditional food in the Plaza. The collaboration between art, culture and cuisine is truly enjoyable and reflects this unique spirit that makes our town special.

In fact, the opening event on December 18th (Bodega 3) for the exhibit of Ariel Sainz "Rastros de una Genesis" will not only delight the visual sensibilities but the culinary ones as well. With a reception that includes appetizers from Cafe del Mar and Tekari, fresh fruit sangria,  mexican chocolate desserts and tequila (from Hotel Cielo Rojo), it is an evening not to be missed.

Reservations recommended (311-258 4155 www.hotelcielorojo.com

And that's not all. A major sponsor of the festival, Hotel Cielo Rojo invites the public to their patio restaurant/bar for a 'courtesy tasting' of organic house tequila and will feature a special menu in celebration of the inauguration. So, lovers of art and delicious food (tequila fans, too) mark your calendars. And, make reservations! www.hotelcielorojo.com

Remember, festival activities are happening nearly every day starting the 18th. On December 19, Cuban artist Angel Delgado will present his newest performance piece on the main road (avenida tercer mundo) near the malecon at 4PM. Local art exhibits will also premier at the malecon on the same day.  On December 20, contemporary painter Katy Darmstaedter will present new works at the Cafe del Mar.  EntreAmigos will open its gallery to Dalilah Perez, a painter from Jalisco, on the 21st of December. Galeria Azul will present Tepic painter Gilverto Silvestre on December 22. plus many many more to come. look out for next week's update!!

And, to know more about these participating artists, visit colectivosanpancho.blogspot.com and enter "noticias" for their bios and info.

An interesting association between two bird species: the White Ibis and Snowy Egret

If we pay attention, sometimes we can notice some different bird species tend to stick together somewhat peacefully. The other day I went birding with some friends who are long time members and great supporters of the San Pancho Birding Club; walking

alongthe river we found a group of birds composed by tw ospecies: the White Ibis (Eudocimus albus) and Snowy Egret (Egretta thula). Since we knew these birds are commonly seen together from our frequent outings, we assumed there must be an underlying reason for this association. So, we sat to observe and get our own hypothesis.

First we noticed that the White Ibises seemed to be doing a harder work on feeding and the Snowy Egrets were mostly waiting to get their food around the Ibises. We also noticed that adult White Ibises tended to have more Egrets around them and than juvenile White Ibises (immature and juvenile Ibises have brown patches of plumage versus a completely white plumage in adults). We

realized that this association had to do with their foraging habits (Ibises feed mostly on animals that are buried or hidden amongst rocks or mud on rivers and estuaries while the Snowy Egrets feed on small fish). The association, which  I later found was originally described in 1975 by two scientists named Coursera and Dinsmore, is a type of commensalism, meaning that one species is benefited while the other is not considerably benefited nor affected. What happens during this White Ibis-Snowy Egret association is that the Ibises remove mud and rocks to find their food and this scares small fish that the Egrets, waiting behind the Ibises can catch easier. Snowy Egrets maximize their foraging efficiency by sticking around the White Ibises who don´t really care as soon as they don´t get any aggression from the Egrets.

Such behavior also occurs with slight variations between other wading bird species. In the case of this particular association, I wondered myself if there could be an ultimate benefit for the White Ibises. Maybe while feeding, the Snowy Egrets act as sentinels helping to protect the Ibises from predators by acknowledging the really absorbed-into-feeding Ibises whenever there is danger. Or maybe White Ibises get another type of protection benefit from the Snowy Egrets while roosting on palm trees. That might be the topic for another article on the Birds of San Pancho here in SanPanchoLife.com...

Notes from the Ranch

MMMMM! Chilly, slow mornings at Rancho Milagro. I've been grabbing a sweater or rebozo, boots and a cup of coffee and heading out to the gardens. The mornings are so sweet. The chickens are sleepy, wandering around, shaking their tail feathers and looking for grub. The dogs do their happy dance, the cat looks bored and life is so good. The sweetness sneaks up on me sometimes and takes my breath away. cat How did I get so lucky? And how can I stay more aware of how good my life is? I get caught up in details and chores. Often times at the end of the day I feel I've not had one authentic moment all day! Busy does not always equal quality. I love to work hard. And I am lucky to have work that I adore. Not everyone is so lucky.

My goal this week is to slow down and give thanks for all of the people, animals and plants in my life. Winter slows me down, I don't want to peel back the covers in the morning. I laze in my warm nest as long as my mind allows me. Then the list in my head starts. I call it "The chickenCommittee". The dogs are making hungry noises and I think about all of the laundry waiting for me on the back porch. I start making my chore list in my mind and then it is over, the warm, slow moment. I fling back the covers, ready to conquer my world. I am seeking a balance. I will spend more time in prayer and contemplation this week. I will turn my cell phone off at 9:00pm and leave it off until 9:00am. I will leave the computer OFF until my quiet time is over. I will give thanks. I will forgive my mistakes and errors. And when I need to, I will ask for forgiveness.

Life in the garden:
The basil is sprouting! I'll have 4 new types in a month or so. Good for pesto pasta on cool evenings. The tomatillo plants have taken over the back garden. I think I've had a 100% sprout rate and I hope you are all ready to eat as many tomatillos as you can! I'm looking for canning gardenrecipes. Oh, and green salsa. Yum.

The sunflowers are almost a meter tall. Planting them against a wall gives them some good thermal heat in the mornings. Along with the sun peaking over the mango tree it is a beautiful picture. If I could get the chickens to pose amid the sunflowers long enough for a photo...well, they are very poor subjects.

Town is filling with friends and visitors. It is nice to see so many familiar faces along Tercer Mundo. Stop by one of the beach restaurants for sunset and see who is in town. Just don't get Steve and Chris started on solving world problems or we'll be there all night long! Although I must admit, those two have some darned good ideas!

Things I am grateful for: recognizing my needs, acting on my needs, and giving thanks for all.

Blessings, Tamara

Interview
Polo Player Elliot King  - Team La Patrona
By Tamara Bode

Elliot polo

Where did you move here from?
I was born in Laguna Beach, CA and moved here from Lake Arrowhead, CA. My Grandfather has had a house here for many years. I moved here a little over two years ago.

What do you do here besides play polo?
I teach English at Escuela del Mundo and also offer private English lessons. And I work in La Patrona Restaurant on the weekends after I play!

How did you become a polo player?
Well, I had  been working at La Patrona Restaurant for a few months and one day the owners who are riders themselves, asked me if I wanted to ride. I fell off a horse right here in San Pancho's jungle when I was 10 years old and didn't want to ride for many years after that.  But it was such an amazing opportunity to ride with some of the best players on this coast that I could not say no. So I got back on a horse in January of 2010 and found out I had a natural gift for polo and that I really loved it. There is an interaction between the rider and the horse that is very special. There are a lot of variables in the game: live animals, competition, field conditions, lighting. It is a very graceful sport; a gentleman's sport.

Do you have a favorite horse?
(Laughter). Well, I don't want to play favorites but I would have to say that Pantera is my favorite right now.

What are your future plans?
Well, I want to stick around San Pancho and enjoy it as it is now, before more development happens. I'm so grateful to be here now. And of course to watch the kids, my students, grow up.

It is a good time to enjoy life with my parents. (Elliots Mom and Dad, Chris and Pam King also live and work in San Pancho.)
