The summer season is in full swing with hot, humid and rainy conditions. Despite the high temperatures we have had some rain showers that have cooled the town down in the last day or two. The rain was an effect of hurricane Frank which passed over the Pacific Ocean yesterday. Thankfully there are no current hurricane warnings in this area of Riviera Nayarit.

San Pancho Update

 
The pueblo offices and the different committees are preparing for the upcoming San Pancho Days which will begin the 25th of September and end the 4th of October. This year, with the economic difficulties it is proving a bit harder to afford quality entertainment but we are working hard to provide an array of performances. There will be cultural programs, Banda musical groups, Mariachi groups, Ballet Folkloric, local musical groups and presentations from the school kids. Everyone is welcome and everything is free. The committees are working hard to make this the best San Pancho Days yet.
 
The Farmers Market, or Mercado del Pueblo, is coming right along with local participants. The hours are Saturday morning from 10:00A.M. to 2:00P.M. in the Plaza del Sol. We are looking for more vendors so if you want to participate talk to Tamara.

El pueblo y las oficinas de las distintas comisiones se est�n preparando para los pr�ximos d�as en San Pancho, que comenzar� el 25 de septiembre y finalizar� el 04 de octubre. Este a�o, con las dificultades econ�micas que est� demostrando ser un poco m�s dif�cil de pagar un entretenimiento de calidad, pero estamos trabajando duro para ofrecer una serie de actuaciones. Habr� programas culturales, grupos musicales Banda, los grupos de Mariachi, Ballet Folkl�rico, grupos musicales locales y las presentaciones de los chicos de la escuela. Todo el mundo es bienvenido y todo es gratis. Los comit�s est�n trabajando duro para hacer esto lo mejor que San Pancho d�as todav�a.
 
Farmers Market o Mercado del Pueblo, viene la derecha junto con los participantes locales. El horario es de ma�ana s�bado de 10 a 2pm en la Plaza del Sol. Estamos buscando m�s proveedores por lo que si quieres participar hablar con Tamara.

Health for Life

 
Have you ever really taken the time to learn about the health benefits ofBird eggs? Most of us, including myself, don't incorporate a lot of eggs into our diets because of the belief that cholesterol in eggs (found in the yolk) raises the cholesterol levels in your body and puts your heart at risk. Well, new research shows that moderate consumption of eggs does not have a negative impact on cholesterol. And suggests that it is saturated fat that raises cholesterol rather than dietary cholesterol.
 
So here's why eggs rock:
1. Eggs are great for the eyes. Egg yolks are high in lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants that have been shown to ward off macular degeneration.
2. One egg contains 6 grams of high-quality protein and all 9 essential amino acids.
3. Regular consumption of eggs may help prevent blood clots, stroke, and heart attacks.
4. An omelet a day can shrink your waist. Researchers found that obese people who ate a two-egg breakfast at least five times a week lost 65 percent more weight and had more energy.
5. They contain the right kind of fat. One egg contains just 5 grams of fat and only 1.5 grams of that is saturated fat.
6. Eggs are one of the only foods that contain naturally occurring vitamin D.
7. Eggs may prevent breast cancer. In one study, women who consumed at least 6 eggs per week lowered their risk of breast cancer by 44%.
8. Eggs promote healthy hair and nails because of their high sulphur content and wide array of vitamins and minerals.
 
So the next time you're in one of the mini-supers around San Pancho or a neighbor offers you some fresh eggs don't shy away from them. Grab them up and enjoy the healthy benefits they have to offer.

Black Throated Magpie Jay

 
Black Throated Magpie Jay - Urraca Negra Carihermosa of UrracaBird Copetona - (Calocitta colliei)

This magnificent bird is a member of the Corvidae (Crow) family. They are often distinguished by their long tail, a long black crest and a very esthetical shape.
 
This species is 58.5 to 76.5 cm (23 to 30 inches) long, more than half of which is the tail. The upperparts are blue with white tips to the tail feathers and the underparts are white.
 
The bill, legs, head, and conspicuous crest are black except for a pale blue crescent over the eyes and a patch under the eye. Their parrot-like calls are varied, loud, raucous and they often mimic other birds with sharp calls, for instance Yellow-Winged Caciques.

This species is endemic to Western M�xico and occurs from southeastern Chihuahua to south of Jalisco and northwestern Colima. They occur in woodlands, except for humid woodlands, and partially open areas.  This species interbreeds with the White-throated Magpie-Jay in Jalisco and Colima, where hybrid specimens are common.
 
The nest is also typical of the family: a big cup of sticks lined with softer material. The female lays 3 to 7 whitish eggs with brown and gray spots. Their mating season starts in late March and chicks are normally born around early May and seen flying by late May to early June. In the San Pancho area they often nest at the top of oil-coconut palm trees.
Their diet is the omnivorous: in San Pancho and the Puerto Vallarta areas it is common to see them feeding of Papelillo or paperbark (Bursera sp.) fruits, wild figs and also of capomo fruits.
 
Although the locally called Urracas copetonas are considered of "Least Concern" in terms of species conservation, here in San Pancho we are blessed to see them flying around the elementary school yards as well as in open areas of the Costa Azul and Golf Course areas and even along the highway when they display a somewhat scavenger behavior as well as their splendid colors and shape!

Su �poca de cortejo comienza a finales de marzo y los pollitos nacen normalmente en torno a principios de mayo y ver volar a finales de mayo hasta principios de junio. En el �rea de San Pancho hacen su nido en la parte superior de las palmas de aceite de coco.
 
Su dieta es omn�vora: en San Pancho y las zonas de Puerto Vallarta es com�n verlos aliment�ndose del fruto de papelillo (Bursera sp.), los higos silvestres y tambi�n de frutas de capomo.
 
Aunque las localmente llamadas Urracas copetonas se consideran de "preocupaci�n menor" en t�rminos de conservaci�n, aqu� en San Pancho tenemos la dicha de verlos volando alrededor de los patios de la escuela primaria, as� como en espacios abiertos del �rea de Costa Azul y en los alrededores del campo de golf e incluso a lo largo de la carretera cuando muestran un comportamiento carro�ero as� como sus espl�ndidos colores y forma!

Luis has vast experience on leading nature tours both in land and aquatic habitats. He has lived in San Pancho for 3 years and has become not only a frequent and avid observer of the local birds and nature but also an educational resource for our community and an environmental activist to help in preserving and restoring natural habitats.

Notes from the Ranch 

 
It has been a busy time at the ranch. I've built 2 more raised beds of 2 meters by 1 1/2 meters for more vegetables. The garden is a wild jungle so I am spending a lot of time trimming and cleaning up after the rain storms. At least I don't have to drag hose around! I've added 9 more large pots for planting and have added berry bushes. The zinnias and basil continues to take over the back garden. I have 5 types of basil now: Lemon Thai Basil, Broad Leaf Italian, Purple Basil, and 2 types of traditional basil that are stronger in oils. I use the last 2 to make essential oils and tonics. The passionfruit are literally falling off of the vines. You can enjoy them at Hotel Ceilo Rojo.
 
I am obsessed with lasagna! Every week I've been making at least one type for Farmers Market. I made a Puerto Rican style 2 weeks ago that was so yummy. Instead of wheat pasta, I used saut�ed platano and combined that with spiced meat mixture and spices. It was a different taste but one I want to repeat. This week, vegetarian lasagna.
 
Karstan is happy in the US where he is apprenticing on an organic farm! The apple doesn't fall very far from the tree. Now he can help me here when he returns. Amazing, he used to make fun of me, saying that is was foolish to grow food when we could go buy it at the store. Now he understands the magic of putting a shovel into the ground and watching things grow. I am very proud of him, of course.
 
We said goodbye to a horse this week. Wizard died of old age and a bout of colic in the middle of the night in one of the pastures. The rest of the herd stood vigil for all night and most of the day until the backhoe could come in the afternoon and dig his grave and bury him. He was the leader but the other alpha male, Captain, was already making his presence known. The youngest, Jenny, stood by, confused with questioning eyes, not understanding why Wizard was not getting up.
We shed tears of gratitude for the time spent together and had a closing ceremony to send him on his way with sage and copal.

Ha sido un tiempo muy ocupado en el rancho. He construido m�s 2 camas elevadas de 2 metros por 1 1 / 2 metros de m�s vegetales. El jard�n es una selva salvaje, as� que estoy pasando mucho tiempo de la siega y limpieza despu�s de las tormentas de lluvia. Por lo menos no tengo que arrastrar la manguera alrededor! He a�adido otros 9 ollas grandes para la siembra y se han a�adido los arbustos de bayas. Las zinnias y albahaca sigue tomando el jard�n trasero. Tengo 5 tipos de albahaca ahora: Lim�n tailandesa Basilio, de hoja ancha italiano, p�rpura Basilio, y 2 tipos de albahaca tradicionales que son m�s fuertes en los aceites. Yo uso los 2 �ltimos para hacer aceites esenciales y t�nicos. El maracuy� son, literalmente, caerse de las vides. Usted puede disfrutar de ellas en el Hotel Ceilo Rojo.

Estoy obsesionado con la lasa�a! Cada semana he estado haciendo al menos un tipo de mercado de los granjeros. Hice un estilo de Puerto Rico hace 2 semanas que fue tan delicioso. En lugar de pasta de trigo, sol�a salteadas y pl�tano combinado que con la mezcla de carne picante y especias. Fue un gusto diferente, pero que quiero repetir. Esta semana, lasa�a vegetariana.
 
Karstan es feliz en los EE.UU. donde es aprendiz en una granja org�nica! La manzana no cae muy lejos del �rbol. Ahora �l me puede ayudar usted a su regreso. Amazing, que se burlaban de m�, diciendo que era una tonter�a es para cultivar alimentos cuando podr�amos ir a comprar en la tienda. Ahora se entiende la magia de poner una pala en la tierra y mirando las cosas crecen. Estoy muy orgullosa de �l, por supuesto.
 
Nos despedimos de un caballo de esta semana. Asistente muri� de viejo y un episodio de c�lico en el medio de la noche en uno de los pastos. El resto de la manada estaba vigilia toda la noche y la mayor parte del d�a hasta que la retroexcavadora podr�a llegar en la tarde y cavar su tumba y enterrarlo. �l era el l�der pero el macho alfa, el capit�n, ya estaba haciendo notar su presencia. El m�s joven, Jenny, estaban por all�, confundidos con ojos inquisitivos, sin comprender por qu� el asistente no se levantaba.
 
Tenemos que verter l�grimas de gratitud por el tiempo pasado juntos, y ten�an una ceremonia de clausura que le enviara en su camino con salvia y copal.

Grupo Ecologico de la Costa Verde
 
What do you do in San Pancho? I am dedicated to the GrupoSea Turtles Ecologico de la Costa Verde, or the "turtle project". When I first arrived I started cleaning the beaches, the estuary and the town with the help of the local kids. As the beaches became cleaner after 11 years, more turtle nests were found so we stopped the kids' environmental classes and town cleanings and focused on turtle nest recovery. I have been doing this since November of 1991.
�Qu� hacer en San Pancho? Estoy dedicado a El Grupo Ecol�gico de la Costa Verde, o �el proyecto de tortugas". Cuando llegu� por primera vez empezaron a limpiar las playas, la r�a y la ciudad con la ayuda de los ni�os locales. En las playas m�s limpias se convirti� despu�s de 11 a�os, m�s los nidos de tortugas fueron encontradas por lo que dejamos las clases de los ni�os y las limpiezas ambientales de la ciudad y se centr� en la recuperaci�n de las tortugas anidan. He estado haciendo esto desde noviembre de 1991.
 
Were you born in San Pancho? No, I was born in San Bernadino, CA.
�Naciste en San Pancho? No, yo nac� en San Bernardino, CA.
 
How did you come to San Pancho? I came the first time because a long time friend was here and had sent a letter to a bunch of us to come and visit. So five of us in two cars came in November of 1991. I learned about the marine turtles and the problems they were facing. At that time, 95% of the nests were taken for food and the other 5% were eaten by animals. The local restaurants had turtle meat and eggs on their menus which lead to more than 20 turtles being trapped and killed every year. The turtles were disappearing.
�C�mo llegaste a San Pancho? Yo vine la primera vez porque un amigo de mucho tiempo estaba aqu� y hab�a enviado una carta a un grupo de nosotros venir a visitarnos. As� que cinco de nosotros en dos autos llegaron en noviembre de 1991. Aprend� sobre las tortugas marinas y los problemas que se enfrentaban. En ese momento, el 95% de los nidos fueron tomadas para la alimentaci�n y el 5% restante fueron comidos por los animales. Los restaurantes locales hab�a carne y huevos de tortuga en sus men�s que llevan a m�s de 20 tortugas quedar atrapados y mueren cada a�o. Las tortugas fueron desapareciendo.
 
What were you doing before you came to San Pancho? I was working in the Sequoia National Forest with the National Parks Service. After 17 years, I moved to the Arrowhead area of Southern California and worked for the U.S. Forest Service. I retired after 32 years of service. While I worked for the Forest Service, like many of the employees I went to night school five nights a week to earn a degree in Forestry.
�Qu� hac�as antes de venir a San Pancho? Yo estaba trabajando en el Bosque Nacional Sequoia con el Servicio de Parques Nacionales. Despu�s de 17 a�os, me mud� a la zona de la punta de flecha del Sur de California y trabaj� para el Servicio Forestal de los EE.UU.. Me retir� despu�s de 32 a�os de servicio. Mientras yo trabajaba para el Servicio Forestal, al igual que muchos de los empleados me fui a la escuela nocturna 5 noches a la semana para obtener un t�tulo en el sector forestal.
 
How do you see the town in comparison to how it was before?Sea Turtles Well, when I first came here, foreigners were not welcome. There were only 5 "gringo style" houses in town. The local people were very poor. They farmed and gathered what food they could. If you wanted a job, you had to take a bus to another bigger town to look for a job.
�C�mo ve la ciudad en comparaci�n a como era antes? Bueno, cuando llegu� por primera vez aqu�, los extranjeros no eran bienvenidos. Hab�a s�lo 5 'estilo gringo "casas de la ciudad. Los habitantes del lugar eran muy pobres. La cr�a y recogida de alimentos lo que pod�an. Si quer�a un trabajo, ten�a que tomar un autob�s a otra ciudad m�s grande para buscar un empleo.
 
Would you leave San Pancho? I don't really know. We have most of our volunteers due to the economy. Out of 68 volunteer applications this year, only 10 have committed and out of that 10, only two are new volunteers. Luckily I have a local group of volunteers that initially went through the environmental classes years ago that are helping us now. We have three or four nests recovered by local volunteers every day.
�Dejar�as de San Pancho? Yo no lo s�. Tenemos la mayor�a de nuestros voluntarios debido a la econom�a. De 68 solicitudes de voluntarios este a�o, s�lo 10 se han comprometido y de ese 10, s�lo 2 son nuevos voluntarios. Por suerte tengo un grupo de voluntarios locales que inicialmente pasaron por el a�o clases de entorno hace que nos est�n ayudando ahora. Tenemos 3 � 4 nidos recuperados por voluntarios locales todos los d�as.
 
What is your dream for San Pancho? Well, to see the local people collectively protect the marine turtles and their nests and offspring. In the near future, San Pancho will be one of the very few beaches with turtles. More and more environmental tourists will come here to see the turtles.
�Cu�l es su sue�o para San Pancho? Bueno, a ver a la gente local colectivamente proteger a las tortugas marinas y sus nidos y cr�as. En un futuro pr�ximo, San Pancho ser� una de las playas con muy pocas tortugas. Cada vez m�s turistas del medio ambiente vendr� aqu� para ver las tortugas.
