Greetings 475 Readers,

The first official rain of the summer came last night and brought with it much needed relief from the heat and humidity that has been present for about a week now. It's almost as if someone hits a switch and the humidity suddenly appears. I'd like to find that switch and turn it off again!

The road construction on Ave. Tercer Mundo is still moving alongTercer Mundo at a rather fast pace and it appears, weather permitting, that all of the concrete will be poured in the next couple of days.

San Pancho Farmers' Market

San Pancho's Mercado del Pueblo kicked off this past Saturday,Farmers Market June 12th in the Plaza del Sol with a great response by both vendors and shoppers. As I entered the plaza Saturday morning with eager anticipation of the first farmer's market, it was exciting to see that many others were arriving with the same enthusiasm. The lineup of vendors was colorful and I ran directly to the table offering delicious cold coffee drinks so that I could concentrate even more keenly on all that was being offered. The cool breezes and cloud cover made the experience all the more delightful.

In the hour that I spent, the crowd continued to trickle in and we all filled our senses with the smells of the herbs, perfumes, oils, spices, breads and sweets. There were 17 vendors with products ranging from fresh vegetables and fruits, baked bread, shrimp empanadas, coffee, coconut oil, banana bread, chutney, marmalade, seed cheese, fresh herbs, soaps, ceviche and local art work. More vendors are expected to become involved this week as the word gets out on this being the place to be on Saturday mornings in San Pancho.

The idea behind the Mercado del Pueblo is to provide an outlet forFarmers Market locals to sell products that are grown or made locally, while building another forum in our community where families can gather and share.   The market is a great way to experience market shopping and support local businesses in San Pancho and the surrounding areas.
The organizers hope that the Market will attract shoppers and become a successful endeavor for its vendors. It will continue on a weekly basis and provide even more specialty products and food offerings.

The San Pancho Farmers' Market, or Mercado del Pueblo, is scheduled to take place every Saturday from 10AM - 1PM, in the Plaza del Sol.  I will see you there!

Note: This Saturday there will be live music at noon.

------------------------------------------------

Nos vemos all!

Health for Life

I just finished a great book loaned to me by Tamara of TailwindTarahumara and it is a must read. The book is "Born to Run", by Christopher McDougall. It will challenge you to rethink your eating and activity plan. I'll let you explore it on your own but I want to share a part of it:

The Tarahumara Indians of Mexico's Copper Canyon are amazing long distance runners with few health problems. They regularly run 100 miles at a time. In homemade leather sandals.

Their traditional diet of pinto beans, squash, chili peppers, wild greens, pinole and lots of chia exceeds the UN's recommended daily intake of protein by more than 50%. Pinole is basically ground corn, cooked and spices added. You can make cakes out of pinole or drink it. Chia is full of protein, too. I would add calcium to this list as the Tarahumaras use limestone to soften the corn as their calcium source. Also, they drink a fermented "corn beer" called Tejuino. It is low in alcohol and high in nutrients. There is a car that drives around San Pancho that sells Tejuino. It is an acquired taste but go ahead and try it.

So, what can we do to improve our diets?

Eat leafy greens for breakfast and eliminate animal products. Studies have shown that cancer cells seem to be stimulated by animal proteins; in fact, they are 300% more likely to grow back after surgery in patients with a "traditional Western diet" than they are in a patient who eats a lot of fruits and vegetables. So our health IS in our own hands.

I am still on my eating plan of no animal products, flour, sugar or dairy. And I feel great! I need to eat more often during the day so I carry nuts and seeds with me.

I am going to the gym 4 or 5 times a week and am adding new challenges: jumping over obstacles, commando crawling, sprinting, anything to surprise my muscles.

Keep it up and you will feel amazing!

Coach Joe Vigil says, "Eat like a poor person and you'll only see your doctor on the golf course."

Provecho!

Sigue as y te sentirs increble!

 Provecho!

Notes from the Ranch

Woohoo! Gear heads unite! I went to the 2010 AutomotrizExpo Mecanica Expo de Mexico last weekend in Guadalajara and it was so much fun! There were auto mechanics from all states of Mexico; from Chiapas to Vera Cruz to Sonora. And parts...wow tons of booths with all of the newest toys. Scanners, fuel injections cleaners, power tools, hot girls handing out posters. It was great! I arrived on Friday with a group of 20 auto mechanics from Puerto Vallarta and the fun never stopped until I left on Sunday!  We all stayed at the same hotel so the first night was low key, everyone hanging out and visiting. Then Saturday the ruckus began! First job was to stand in line and get my Pass. Yes, an official Pass with my name on it! As you can imagine, I was the only foreigner there and certainly the only foreign woman! We had to fill out a pile of forms, take a survey for a lottery prize and then we were free to go explore. I definitely have power tool envy now.

A few notes:
Mechanics from Chihuahua win the prize for the LONGEST boots! Their boot tips stuck out at least 4 inches past the end of their toes! And they wore the boots with matching hand tooled belts like rock stars! If you have a loud, obnoxious voice, you do not need a microphone!

If you want to see beautiful young women with amazing bodies dressed scantily, come to the next Expo. There was the Bosch girl, the Bardahl girl, the spark plug girl.... you get the picture. Men are so obvious.

Ladies: if your butt is bigger than a size 8, DO NOT wear skinny leg jeans....can I just say "muffin top"?

The Saturday night dinner was great. There was a mariachi band that rocked it for a couple of hours, then a comedian that had us rolling on the floor. I know my Spanish is good if I can figure out most of the jokes!

Then the raffle. This is after the tequila, the tongue tacos, the hooting and hollering at the models. Yes, scantily clad women again. The top prize was a 25,000 peso scanner. And no, I did not win to my great disappointment. But some young guy from parts unknown won and had a smile from ear to ear. The festivities weren't over until 2:00am but it was definitely worth staying up that late. Sunday was a slow day, packing up, one last trip through the Expo, lots of promises to keep in touch and plans for next year.
So Rancho del Rio rocked Guadalajara for a weekend and I made lots of great contacts and new friends. And the aroma of gas and oil is still lingering in my luggage!

Party on, Gear heads!

Things I am thankful for: learning Spanish, great mechanics, and tongue tacos. Well, not so much.

Blessings, Tamara

Notas del Rancho

Woohoo!

Y no, no gan, gran decepcin.

Bueno, no tanto.
.

Bendiciones, Tamara
