wow, Av. Tercer Mundo looks great! Workers from the Bahia de Banderas have been working hard the past two weeks to clean up the main street of San Pancho by sweeping the street and sidewalks, removing trash, landscaping, and painting. And it appears that the yellow painted curbs mean that parking will now be enforced along Av. Tercer Mundo making traffic flow better for everyone. The next time you walk by a piece of trash, consider picking it up and tossing it into a nearby garbage can. Imagine if all of us did this every day...

Update on Ana Paula Mendoza-Arriega
 In March Ana Paula Mendoza-Arriega underwent cleft palate surgery thanks to many San Pancho residents who donated money to save her beautiful smile. Ana Paula has had eight weeks to recover and is scheduled to go back to the hospital in Tepic for a check-up. Ana Paula, along with her parents will head to Tepic on Monday, May 3rd for her final post-surgery check up. According to Ana Paula's mother, Blanca, she will not need any additional surgeries and is on the path to a full recovery.
However, the Arriega-Riviera family is still in need of funds to purchase bus transportation to Tepic. Our goal is to raise $600 pesos so both of Ana Paula's parents can accompany her to Tepic. All donations can be dropped off to Nicole Fredrichs either at the SanPanchoLife.com Office or at Panchito's Bar/Casa Panchito by Sunday, May 2nd. All money donated goes directly towards the aforementioned effort.

Recicla Parque Projects in Nayarit
During the next few weekends, entreAmigos along with the  PEACE team will join forces with hundreds of volunteers and the local community to build four children's parks/playgrounds made almost entirely out of recycled materials at four different schools in the Punta de Mita area. The first park was built on Saturday, April 24th, at the Corral del Risco Primary School. Over 250 kids and adults came out to help build an amazing park for the primary school. If you'd like to volunteer for the next event you can join entreAmigos and PEACE on Saturday, May 8th, anytime from 9:00A.M. to 6:00P.M. They will be building THREE recycled parks in ONE day at three different schools in Emiliano Zapata.
Volunteers from San Pancho can meet at 8:00A.M. at entreAmigos. Carpools will be leaving from entreAmigos and going to Punta de Mita with returns throughout the day. Or you can join them in the main plaza of Punta de Mita if you would like to come by your own means.
Volunteer jobs include construction of every type, gardening, painting, art, childcare, food preparation and serving, and general group care. Everyone who participates will receive a t-shirt, food, drinks and the opportunity to work side by side with an entire community. Not able to join in person? entreAmigos primary focus is to increase educational  opportunities for the children of San Pancho in Nayarit Mexico. Durante los próximos fines de semana, EntreAmigos junto con el equipo de PEACE juntarán fuerzas con centenares de volusntarios y de la comunidad local para construir cuatro parques recreativos hechos casi enteramente de materiales reciclados en cuatro diferentes escuelas en el área de Punta de Mita.
El primer parque fue construido el sábado 24 de abril, en la escuela primaria de Corral del Risco. Más de 250 niños y adultos salieron a ayudar para construir un parque asombroso para la escuela primaria.
Si desea ser voluntario para el próximo evento puede unirse a EntreAmigos y PEACE el Sábado, 08 de mayo, a cualquier hora a partir de las 9 a.m. y hasta las 6:00 pm. Estarán construyendo tres reciclaparques en un día en tres escuelas diferentes en la comunidad de Emiliano Zapata.

What does eating green mean? It's choosing organics when  possible, emphasizing vegetables, fruits, and grains over meats, and striving to find locally produced foods that travel fewer miles from field to market to kitchen. Trying to eat lower on the food chain.
When I was growing up my family had meat once a week. It was a treat. Even if it was humble ground beef in a casserole my Mom called "Slumgullion" or "Goulash", which was everything in the fridge and tomato sauce. She was not the most inspired of cooks. But feeding 4 kids under 8 years old and 2 adults on a very restricted budget was tough. I admire her inventiveness now. I can't say I did as a kid when we were served canned tuna tacos or Vienna sausages in jam. No, I am not kidding. What I do know is that when it was just my Mom, my brother Ken and I before she married again, if there was only food enough for 2, she went without. And she made the nights that we had rice with milk, sugar and cinnamon a treat. Snow pudding is what we called it and it filled our tummies. She filled hers with lots of strong coffee and worry.
I am in the last weeks of my vegetarian experiment. And you know what? I am going to continue by choice. I like the way I feel, I like the weight I've managed to lose, and I like the fact that I am not eating animals or animal products. I dreamt of a hamburger last night. (Okay, I am a little OCD about burgers, I admit it). But this morning I couldn't imagine eating beef. It takes 40 days to change a habit. And I see the results. Give it a whirl. ¡Provecho!
¿Qué significa comer verde? Es elegir alimentos orgánicos cuando sea posible, haciendo hincapié en verduras, frutas y granos y esforzarse por encontrar los alimentos de producción local que viajan menos millas desde el campo hasta el mercado y la cocina. Tratar de comer más abajo en la cadena alimenticia.
Cuando yo era pequeña mi familia comía carne una vez a la semana. Era un placer. Incluso si sólo era carne de res molida sencilla en una cazuela de mi mamá la llamaba Slumgullion o Goulash, tenía cualquier cosa que hubiera en el refri y salsa de tomate. Ella mo era la más inspirada de los cocineras. Pero alimentar a 4 niños menores de 8 años y 2 adultos con un presupuesto muy restringido fue duro. Admiro su creatividad ahora. No decir que lo hice cuando era niña y me servía tacos de atún en lata o salchichas de Viena con jalea. No, no estoy bromeando. Lo que sí sé es que cuando fuimos sólo mi mamá, mi hermano Ken y yo antes de que se casara de nuevo, si sólo había suficiente comida para dos ella no comía. Y algunas noches ella hacía arroz con leche, azúcar y canela y era una fiesta. El pudín de nieve era lo que era y llenaba nuestras pancitas. Ella se llenaba con una gran cantidad de café fuerte y preocupación.
Estoy en las últimas semanas de mi experimento vegetariano. ¿Y sabe qué? Voy a seguir por elección. Me gusta la manera en que me siento, el peso que he conseguido perder y el hecho de que no estoy comiendo a los animales o productos animales. Soñaba con una hamburguesa anoche. (Bueno, yo soy un poco OCD con las hamburguesas, lo admito). Pero esta mañana no pude imaginarme comiendo carne de vaca. Tardamos 40 días para cambiar un hábito. Y veo los resultados. Notes from the Ranch
I've been thinking a lot about my Grandpa Bill this week. He was a  salesman at Smiling Sylvans Furniture in Spokane, WA by day and gardener extraordinaire by night. I couldn`t wait to hear his 1963 Mercury rumble up the driveway in the evenings. It meant raspberry picking time! We were only allowed to pick the berries with him. He'd change clothes, grab the hose and head for the back corner of the yard with my brother and I in tow.
It was a big yard and my Grammy had a lot of flower beds and lilac bushes that made for good hiding places. We were brave bush climbers but sometimes we failed. I left my 2 year old brother, Ken, hanging by his foot in the crotch of a lilac bush for most of an afternoon. Hey, I forgot him. He, on the other hand, has never forgotten the incident. Sorry, Bro, again.
It was a simple way of life. Work in the day; family, home and garden at night. I liked it and miss it. And I am trying to make my life similar.
Grammy would clean, cook and garden all day. We were given our chores. And at the end of the day, on about sunset, we'd take a hose bath one more time, change into our pajamas, have a glass of hummingbird juice (strawberry jello with lots of sugar and not so much water) while Grammy had her cocktail, lounge on the patio and wait for Grandpa Bill to come home. That was when the joy began! We were together! We'd snuggle and hog laps until we couldn`t keep our eyes open anymore and Grandpa Bill will carry us to the sun porch where we slept. I know I faked being asleep a lot just so that he would carry me. I still love the smell of whiskey and cigarettes on a man.
Things I am thankful for: sweet memories, hard work and gentle moments.
Notas del Rancho
He estado pensando mucho acerca de mi abuelo Bill esta semana.  Era un vendedor de muebles en Sonriendo Sylvans Spokane, WA durante el día y extraordinario jardinero por la noche. No podía esperar a escuchar el motor de su Mercurio 1963 por el camino en las tardes. Significaba que iríamos a recoger frambuesas! A nosotros sólo se nos permitía recoger las bayas con él. Se cambiaba de ropa, agarraba la manguera de la esquina trasera del jardín con mi hermano y yo en el remolque.
Era un gran jardín y mi abuela tenía un montón de flores y arbustos de lilas que hacían unos buenos escondites. Eramos valientes subiendo a loas arbusto pero a veces fallamos. Una vez dejé a mi hermano Ken de 2 años, colgado de un pie en la rama de una lila la mayor parte de la tarde. Hey, yo lo olvidé. Él, en cambio, nunca ha olvidado el incidente. Lo siento, hermano, otra vez.
Era una forma de vida simple. El trabajo en el día, la familia, el hogar y jardín en la noche Me gustaba y lo extraño. Estoy tratando de hacer mi vida similar.
Mi abuela podía limpiar, cocinar y cuidar el jardín durante todo el día. Nos daba nuestras tareas. Y al final del día, en la hora del crepúsculo, tomábamos un baño de manguera una vez más, nos poníamos nuestros pijamas, tomábamos un vaso de jugo "de colibrí" (gelatina de fresa con mucha azúcar y un poco de agua), mientras que mi abuela tomaba su cóctel en el patio y esperaba a que mi abuelo Bill volviera a casa. Era entonces cuando comenzaba la alegría! Estabamos juntos! Nos acurrucamos y jugábamos a revolcarnos hasta que no podíamos mantener los ojos abiertos y el abuelo de Bill nos llevaba a la cama. Muchas veces fingía estar dormida sólo para que él me cargara.
Todavía me encanta el olor del whisky y los cigarrillos en un hombre.

This Week's Voice of San Pancho
Gloria and Triny
This week La Voz was able to catch up with two people that have  a major foothold in the San Pancho commerce community. Gloria and Triny have interests in not just one but three separate restaurants in town. We spoke to them about the maturation of San Pancho as they have witnessed it over the years, their opinions about how business here has been affected by the current downturn in tourism and their plans for success in the future.
Triny has lived in San Pancho her entire life while Gloria moved here fourteen years ago from Oregon. "There were really no cars in town at that time," Gloria recalls, "We did have a telephone though." As we sit at one of the curbside tables at popular restaurant La Ola Rica, she points to the corner across the street. "It was a little tough though because you had to run around the corner to get your calls. Everyone knew your business too because all the faxes for the entire town came in at the same place."
La Ola Rica was not always the large beautiful restaurant that patrons enjoy today. In fact, the business was started by Gloria and Triny selling cappuccinos from what was then just a modest three bedroom house. They fondly recalled trying several different strategies to make money. "We even rented rooms out for a short time," Gloria smiles. In the early days of La Ola Rica, the restaurant was only open on the weekends with only five street side tables. The gals would go door to door, extending only personal invitations to friends and family in order to establish a menu for the weekend's meals. From that humble beginning, the popularity of the business allowed them to expand until they were offering three meals a day. La Ola Rica has finally found its recipe for success. Now employing a staff of sixteen people, their summer schedule is Monday through Thursday 6:00pm- 10:30pm.
Last April, Gloria and Triny opened another restaurant, this time  on the beach. La Playa is open mainly for the lunch crowd. Closed only on Mondays, the restaurant is open from 1:00pm to 7:00pm. Patrons can enjoy the shade of one of their light green umbrellas the restaurant provides as they sit on a lounge chair, sip a cold beverage, and enjoy this town's wonderful beach. Gloria admits that the recent down turn in tourism to Mexico has made it difficult to open a second restaurant. She did indicate that this year has been better than last year, and she is definitely hopeful for the future. "This was not a banner year, but any business that is still alive should really count their blessings. The economy will come back and tourism in Nayarit will boom. This really is a great place to have a business," Gloria states with a truly optimistic smile.
The final restaurant they have interests in is just kiddy corner from La Ola Rica. La Tienda de Don Chuy offers tortas and tostadas at very reasonable prices. The restaurant is open from 10:00am-2:00pm and 4:00pm-9:00pm, closed only on Sundays. Run by a friend, Chuyita, who actually used to have her own restaurant next door to the current location. "Almost every business in town is run by locals," Gloria points out. "That really speaks volumes as to how the people of San Pancho are intelligent and industrious. This town is growing and can support a large number of future businesses. As long as people are dedicated and continue to be hard working, they are going to experience success here."
When asked how all of the construction over the past year has affected their bottom line, the two pointed out the following; it has been difficult with some of the challenges that not only Tercer Mundo has experienced over the past twelve months, but also San Pancho and Mexico as a whole. Bottom line is that now when you drive into town, there is a brand new street that takes you through a charming, clean village full of people that commonly offer everyone smiles. "This really is one of the best places around to live," the two agree. The growing pains of the past have been a little tough but Gloria and Triny are ready to move forward together with the community.

Esta semana La Voz pudo ponerse al día con dos personas que  tienen un importante lugar en el comercio en la comunidad de San Pancho. Gloria y Triny tienen intereses en no sólo uno sino tres restaurantes independientes en el pueblo. Hablamos con ellas acerca del desarrollo de San Pancho, ya que han sido testigos en los últimos años y sus opiniones sobre cómo las empresas de aquí se han visto afectadas por la recesión actual en el turismo y sus planes para el éxito en el futuro.
Triny ha vivido en San Pancho toda su vida, mientras que Gloria se mudó aquí hace catorce años desde Oregon. "Prácticamente no había coches en el pueblo en ese momento," recuerda Gloria: " Sin embargo teníamos un teléfono ." Nos sentábamos en la banqueta o en una de las mesas de La Ola Rica que en ese entonces ya era un restaurante popular y estábamos al pendiente del teléfono en la contra esquina. "Era un poco difícil, porque había que correr y cruzar la calle para contestar las llamadas. Todo el mundo sabía de sus negocios también, porque todos los faxes del pueblo entraban en el mismo lugar".
La Ola Rica no fue siempre el gran restaurante hermoso que hoy en día disfrutan los clientes. De hecho, el negocio lo iniciaron Gloria y Triny vendiendo capuchinos en lo que entonces era sólo una modesta casa de tres recámaras. Recuerdan con cariño todos los intentos y diferentes estrategias para ganar dinero. "Incluso alquilabamos habitaciones por un corto tiempo," sonríe Gloria. En los primeros días de La Ola Rica, el restaurante estaba abierto sólo los fines de semana y sólo contaba con cinco mesas en la calle lateral. Las chicas fueron de puerta en puerta, invitando personalmente a familiares y amigos a fin de establecer un menú para las comidas del fin de semana. A partir de ese humilde comienzo, la popularidad de la empresa les permitió ampliarse hasta que ofrecer tres comidas al día. La Ola Rica por fin ha encontrado su fórmula para el éxito. Ahora emplea un total de dieciséis personas, su horario de verano es de lunes a jueves 18:00-22:30.
En abril pasado, Gloria y Triny abrieron otro restaurante, esta vez  en la playa. La Playa esta abierto, principalmente para la hora del almuerzo. Sólo cierra los lunes, el restaurante está abierto de 1:00 pm a 7:00 pm. Los clientes pueden disfrutar de la sombra de una de las sombrillas de color verde claro que el restaurante dispone y sentarse en un cómodo sillón, tomar una bebida fría, y disfrutar de la maravillosa playa de este pueblo. Gloria admite que el descenso del turismo a México ha hecho difícil abrir un segundo restaurante. Ella indicó que este año ha sido mejor que el año pasado, y ella definitivamente tiene esperanza para el futuro. "Este no fue un año excepcional, pero cualquier empresa que todavía esté viva realmente debe contar sus bendiciones. La economía volverá y el turismo en Nayarit estará en auge. Este realmente es un gran lugar para tener un negocio ", dice Gloria con una sonrisa realmente optimista.
Su tercer negocio está en contraesquina de La Ola Rica. La Tienda de Don Chuy ofrece tortas y tostadas a precios muy razonables.
