Were you born in San Pancho? No, I was born in Colorado Veronica Lindsay

and then moved to California with my family when I was 10. I stayed in California for many years and raised a family in the Carmel area. And then my husband and I moved to Mexico where I've been for eight years now.
¿Naciste en San Pancho? No, nací en Colorado y luego me mudé a California con mi familia cuando tenía 10 años. Me quedé en California por muchos años y formé una familia en el área de Carmelo. Entonces mi esposo y yo nos mudamos a México, donde he estado durante ocho años.

How did you come to San Pancho? My husband first took me to Mexico City in 1965. He attended college there and wanted me to experience the city like he did. After that visit we started vacationing in Mexico quite a bit with our children. The first time I saw Puerto Vallarta was in the early 1970's and there were only dirt roads to travel on at that time. The first time I saw San Pancho was on a vacation with the kids. We saw a sign that read San Francisco, and since we lived near San Francisco, CA we decided to stop to let the kids play in the river. And if I remember correctly the bridge into town didn't exist at that time.

¿Como llegaste a San Pancho? Mi marido primero me llevó a la ciudad de México en 1965. Él había asistido a la universidad y quería que yo viviera la ciudad como el lo había hecho. Luego de esta visita comenzamos a venir de vacaciones a México con nuestros hijos. La primera vez que vi Puerto Vallarta fue a principios de los años 1970 y sólo había caminos de tierra para viajar en en ese momento. La primera vez que vine a San Pancho fue de vacaciones con los niños. Vimos un cartel que decía San Francisco, y ya que vivimos cerca de San Francisco, CA, decidimos parar y dejar a los niños que jugaran en el río. Y si no recuerdo mal el puente a la entrada del pueblo no existía en ese momento.

Why did you choose San Pancho over California? After my husband retired we decided to take a year to travel. We spent time in Europe and ended our journey in Mexico. After three months in Mexico we knew this is where we wanted to end up. So eight years ago we pulled a trailer down and first stayed in Puerto Vallarta for three months, but during our stay there we found out that we couldn't legally park the trailer in that particular camp ground so we moved to Sayulita where we stayed for five years. We lived in the trailer right on the beach and continued to travel to places like Cuba, Hawaii, and all over the United States. After five years of living in the trailer in Sayulita I got tired of it because I love to entertain and I just couldn't do it in a small trailer. I had become involved in Escuela del Mundo and my husband, Ray, always loved San Pancho so we decided to find a home here. Ray would have been in San Pancho from the beginning but I needed a little more action which is why we first choose Sayulita! But then San Pancho began to woo me and it has turned out to be such a blessing for me.
¿Porque elegiste San Pancho y no California?Después de que mi marido se jubiló decidimos tomar un año para viajar. Pasamos tiempo en Europa y terminamos nuestro viaje en México. Después de tres meses en México supimos que aquí es donde queríamos estar. Así que hace ocho años trajimos un trailer y nos quedamos en Puerto Vallarta durante tres meses, durante nuestra estancia allí nos enteramos de que, legalmente, no podíamos estacionar el trailer en esa zona en particular así que nos mudamos a Sayulita donde nos quedamos cinco años. Vivíamosen la playa en nuestro remolque y seguimos viajando a lugares como Cuba, Hawai, y en todos los Estados Unidos. Después de cinco años de vivir en el trailer en Sayulita me cansé de él porque me encanta ofrecer fiestas y no podía hacerlo en un pequeño remolque. Me había involucrado en la Escuela del Mundo y a mi esposo, Ray, siempre le había gustado San Pancho así que decidimos buscar una casa aquí. Ray hubiera venido a San Pancho desde el principio pero yo necesitaba un poco más de acción y por eso fue que primero elegimos Sayulita! Pero luego San Pancho me empezó a enamorar y ha resultado ser una bendición para mí.

What were you doing before you came here? I was a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for 20 years and my main focus was working with women and elders in California. I had my own private practice and dealt with individuals who were going through treatments, had health issues, or were a victim of domestic violence. At the end of my career I became a Hospice caregiver and found it to be such an honor to do that kind of work. I have always challenged myself and have never been happy staying in one job for too long, but I definitely felt finished and complete when I stopped working.

¿Que hacías antes de llegar aqui? Yo fui trabajadora social clínica licenciada por 20 años, mi objetivo principal era trabajar con mujeres y ancianos en California. Tenía mi propia práctica privada y trataba con personas que estaban pasando por tratamientos, tenían problemas de salud, o habían sido víctimas de violencia doméstica. Al final de mi carrera me convertí en una proveedor de cuidados hospitalarios y encontré que era un gran honor hacer este tipo de trabajo. Siempre he sido autocrítica y nunca estuve feliz en un trabajo por mucho tiempo, pero definitivamente me sentí completa cuando dejé de trabajar.

What can you tell us about your art projects? I was on the Veronica Lindsay

beach one day doodling in my journal when a woman, who is a dear friend now, walked up and asked me if I was an artist. She explained to me that she was an artist and got me involved in an art class in Puerto Vallarta. So for four years we went to Puerto Vallarta together twice a week for class. After four years we moved the classes to San Pancho where we continue to paint today. It's funny because I never wanted to paint because my mother was an artist and we didn't always agree on the type of art that we both liked! Plus living in Carmel I was surrounded by friends who were artists so I wanted to do something different and I find it very interesting that I get to San Pancho and that feeling changed.
¿Que nos puedes decir sobre tu proyecto arte? Un día estaba en la playa garabateando en mi diario cuando una mujer, ahora una querida amiga, se acercó y me preguntó si yo era un artista. Ella me explicó que era un artista y me invitó a entrar en una clase de arte en Puerto Vallarta. Así que durante cuatro años fuimos juntas a Puerto Vallarta dos veces a la semana para la clase. Después de cuatro años mudamos las clases a San Pancho en las que seguimos pintando en la actualidad. Es gracioso porque yo nunca quise pintar porque mi madre era una artista y no siempre estuvimos de acuerdo sobre el tipo de arte que nos gustaba! Además viviendo en Carmelo estuve rodeada de amigos que eran artistas, así que quería hacer algo diferente y me resulta muy interesante que al llegar a San Pancho ese sentimiento haya cambiado.

How do you see the town in comparison to how it was before culturally/socially/economically? Culturally I think there are so many gifted and talented people who have been attracted to the town and to each other. I see how the Colectivo San Pancho struggles to survive and I think what they did this year with the art festival was nothing short of a miracle and they are doing it for the community. The music scene has kind of died now since Gallo's closed and that's unfortunate but it is still alive. Everything is going to grow and change because different people with different ideas of how to improve it will continue to come to San Pancho. It's such a small town but the community is very generous which I think is evident by entreAmigos success. I love the sense of community in San Pancho, that's what really comes through.
¿Como ves al pueblo ahora en comparación a como lo viste antes cultural/social/ y económicamente? Culturalmente creo que hay cada vez más personas dotadas de talento. Veo cómo el Colectivo San Pancho lucha por sobrevivir y creo que lo que hicieron este año con el festival de arte fue nada menos que un milagro y lo están haciendo para la comunidad. La escena de la música ha decaído un poco ahora desde que Gallo cerró los cual es una lástima, pero aún está vivo. Todo va a crecer y cambiar, porque diferentes personas con diferentes ideas de cómo mejorar seguirán llegando a San Pancho. Es un pueblo tan pequeño, pero la comunidad es muy generosa lo que me parece evidente por el éxito de EntreAmigos. Me encanta el sentimiento de comunidad de San Pancho, que es lo que realmente cuenta.

What makes living in San Pancho so special for you? Living here has its own rhythm. It's such a transient community. I think the people who move here are more adventurous. My friends who visit me say we are like pioneers - we are willing to break out of the familiar and do something different. One of the things I love most here is the spontaneity and flexibility to be open to people and relationships. It's great to be able to run into a friend on the street and make plans right then and there to do something. I have such dear friends here and knowing how much I'm loved makes it so special for me.
¿Qué hace vivir en San Pancho tan especial para ti? Vivir aquí tiene su propio ritmo. Es una comunidad tan transitoria. Creo que las personas que se trasladan aquí son más aventureros. Mis amigos que me visitan dicen que somos como pioneros - estamos dispuestos a salir de lo familiar y hacer algo diferente. Una de las cosas que más me gustan aquí es la espontaneidad y la flexibilidad de estar abierto a las personas y las relaciones. Es genial ser capaz de correr con un amigo en la calle y ahacer planes en ese mismo momento. Tengo tantos y tan queridos amigos aquí y saber lo mucho que me quieren lo hace tan especial para mí.

Would you leave San Pancho now? I am going back to Veronica Lindsay

California in May to wrap up a few things with my home but will be back in September or October. I have no plans to return permanently at this point but I know I'll come and go as often as I possibly can.

Is there a story you want to share with us?When we had made the decision to come back to San Pancho we had decided to come earlier than planned. So I emailed the man we were renting from and asked if the home would be ready for us sooner than expected and his reply was "come on home." That has stuck with me. The minute we moved here it was a perfect fit. Home is here.
¿Hay alguna anécdota que quieras compartir con nosotros? Cuando habíamos tomado la decisión de regresar a San Pancho decidimos venir antes de lo previsto. Así que le envié un correo el hombre que me rentaba y le pregunté si la casa estaría lista para nosotros antes de lo planeado y su respuesta fue "vengan a casa." Eso me emocionó. En el momento en que nos mudamos aquí todo fue perfecto. Mi hogar es aquí.
