Greetings 422 Readers,

The village is starting to prepare for Semana Santana (March 31-April 4), which is the most important Catholic Holiday in Mexico. The make-shift structures that will provide shelter for many vacationers during that week are already being constructed on the beach. It's going to be a busy week in San Pancho for sure.

But for now we have several events happening this weekend, like entreAmigos annual Children's Art Fundraiser which is happening tonight. Check out their website for all of the details. And for all you college basketball fans you can watch March Madness at Panchito's Bar Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.

Update on Ana Paula's Surgery

Ana Paula

Blanca and Ana Paula traveled to Tepic on Thursday, March 18, 2010 for Ana Paula's corrective surgery.

Once Blanca arrived at the hospital she discovered the surgery was not free and they needed $10,000 pesos for the surgery and medication.

Thanks to numerous donors we have already raised $3,000 pesos, which was given to Blanca before she left for Tepic.

Our goal and hope is to raise another $7,000 pesos for the Arriega-Riviera family. Your gift will help restore a child's smile and will quite possibly change her life forever. Let's remember that a small donation can not only have a huge impact on a child, but it can also help their entire family.

All donations can be dropped off at the SanPanchoLife.com Office located on the corner of Av. Tercer Mundo and Calle Ceilan (polo field road) from 10:00A.M.-2:00P.M. There is also a PayPal Donate button on the bottom of every page on the SanPanchoLife.com website where you can safely and easily make a donation to the family. All money donated goes directly towards the aforementioned effort. SanPanchoLife.com will continue to provide you with updates on the surgery and post-recovery of Ana Paula.

Health for Life

Spring is coming and it is time for cleaning. Not only our houses need a good airing out and cleaning but our bodies benefit from a cleanse as well. Take this opportunity to refresh your health.

I'm listening to my body and for this week it is wanting to balanceTea the acidity in my system and add fiber. So I am drinking Jamaica Tea (Hibiscus Flower Tea), without sugar, eating lots of fresh celery and raw almonds. Doesn't sound very flavorful, I'll grant you that, but after 4 days of this I am already feeling the benefits! Jamaica Tea is a natural diuretic as is celery. I was feeling bloated and this has really helped. I put a tea bag of Jamaica in my water bottle and drink from it all day. Both Jamaica Tea and celery help kidney function, too. Jamaica Tea also lowers blood pressure.

Raw almonds have been used for centuries to cleanse and add fiber to our diets. Almonds are loaded with protein, too. When I get tired of the taste, I put them in a cast iron skillet on the stove and toast them without adding oil. These are good on salads and in soup. I made an amazing spinach and sweet potato soup last night topped with toasted almonds. For now I am passing on the bread and crackers.

I've been making myself go to the gym every day. I am not good at working out at home so the extra effort it takes for me to drive to Sayulita forces me to work out. Power Gym has a great monthly fee of 500 pesos. Power Gym is located above Pico de Gallo grocery store.  I'll see you there!

A healthy lifestyle takes time and commitment. Honor yourself enough to care. This weeks assignment: fresh green vegetables including celery and spinach, Jamaica tea, almonds and movement!

Provecho!

Nos vemos all!

Provecho!

Notes from the Ranch

The Ranch's computer is in the shop and I am learning how to use Kar's Mac. Can I teach an old dog new tricks? I am not as computer savvy as I thought I was! Ah, humility.

Spring has sprung and it is time for the heavy winter curtains andWhite Linens bedspreads to be hung out on the line to air before being stored for next winter. Down come the bright paintings and artwork and I am back to bare white walls and open windows.  The simplicity of white calms my spirit.  The sewing machine is set up in the living room with lots of muslin to sew pillow covers and shades. I like the change.

I planted some zinnia seeds. I don't know what I was expecting but I feel like Gulliver in his travels! The plants are tiny, not one over 6" tall! I expected big, beefy, showy flowers and I am looking at these little miniature chaparitas.  The colors are spectacular, though, and the butterflies don't seem to mind the size.

I topped all of the basil plants this morning and made a bouquet for the kitchen. There is nothing like the smell of fresh basil. The Thai basil is finally growing so I may try a Thai pesto tomorrow. Hmm, maybe I'll add lemon grass and put it on top of rice noodles.

I hope to get to Rancho del Rio this weekend. I need an adventure. I am feeling my spring itch for change and excitement. Road Trip! Oh, I best not say that too loud or I won't be able to get the dogs out of the car for days!

Things I am grateful for: Kid sleeping upstairs, dogs wrestling, cat sleeping on the printer and sun! Que mas?

Blessings, Tamara

Qu ms?

Bendiciones, Tamara

This Week's Voice of San Pancho

Brian and Melissa Johnson

What do you do in San Pancho?  We spend time with our kids, our friends, surfing, working, and helping out at Escuela del Mundo and entreAmigos.

Were you born in San Pancho? No, Melissa was born in LosMelissa Johnson Angeles and Brian was born in Seattle.
Naciste en San Pancho? No, Melissa naci en Los Angeles y Brian naci en Seattle.

How did you come to San Pancho? We moved here four years ago after first visiting Sayulita.  We were looking for a change for our kids, who were only 11 weeks and 3 yrs at the time.  We had searched in many places, including New Zealand, Thailand and Central California, but finally decided that San Pancho was the perfect spot.

Why did you choose San Pancho over Los Angeles? Los Angeles, with its traffic and frenetic pace, just wasn't feeling right for us anymore. Also, Brian was ready to retire from his job after 20 years, and it was time for a change.

What were you doing before you came here? Brian was working full-time, both as an environmental manager and as a professor.  Melissa was working part-time for an environmental non-profit, and taking care of two small kids.

What can you tell us about your current jobs in San Pancho? Melissa's now working for Naef Cuisine, a catering firm in Punta Mita.  It's a great job, as she works mostly with brides and homeowners gearing up for a big party!  Naef also makes incredible gelato and baked goods, so our family is always well-fed in the sweets department. Brian helped start Sanpa, a sustainable design and construction group.  Sanpa helped with the green design and construction of the bodega renovation for entreamigos.  Brian also started Mar Adentro, a business to train and educate kids and adults to be more comfortable in the ocean.  The idea is that better understanding the beach, waves, currents, critters and the all-around ocean environment makes for a safer and more fun ocean experience.  Its not like surf lessons, but is designed to help folks be more efficient and have more fun in the ocean.

How do you see the town in comparison to how it wasBrian Johnson before culturally/socially/economically? In the four years that we've been here, we've noticed a big change, mostly due to organizations like entreamigos and Escuela del Mundo.  There are so many more young families here, and lot more opportunities for cultural exchange.
As a pueblo, we are also seeing a lot of development that may stress the community infrastructure and water supply.  We need to have a better understanding of the capacity of our pueblo's resources to absorb new population and maintain the character that attracted us all to San Pancho.

Why do you think there are so many cultural projects in San Pancho? It's because of the many different cultures and backgrounds here.  We have artists from all over the world, including Mexico, South American and Europe, who all bring a different experience.  Also, people here are willing to share experiences and generally integrate quite well.

Would you leave San Pancho now? No!  It's taken us four years to make friends, find childcare, put together jobs, and generally get our groove.  Moving is the last thing we want to do!
Dejaria a San Pancho en este momento? No!

Is there a story you want to share with us? Oh, the stories we could tell.   We are just very grateful for meeting so many wonderful people, both from the pueblo and from lands far away.  We take care of each other, our kids and our town.
