The weather continues to throw curve balls at us but as I look out the window at blue skies and palms swaying in the breeze it appears that the rain is gone...for the time being.

Driving in Mexico - Safety Tips
Far too many tourists fear the thought of driving in Mexico or any foreign country for that matter. That's regrettable, because a car opens a whole new world to the traveler, and makes the experience more enjoyable as well. However, there are some differences between driving in the U.S. or Canada and in Mexico, and a driver would be wise to know what to be aware of prior to trying it for the first time. Here's a list of the most important things to know before driving in Mexico.
TRAFFIC SAFETY AND ROAD CONDITIONS: While in a foreign country, U.S. citizens may encounter road conditions that differ significantly from those in the United States. The information below concerning Mexico is provided for general reference only, and may not be totally accurate in a particular location or circumstance. Public transportation vehicles, specifically taxis and city buses, often do not comply with traffic regulations, including observing speed limits and stopping at red lights.
Making left hand turns in Mexico: You may come upon a slow moving vehicle whose driver keeps making a hand signal for a left-hand turn, but there is no place to turn left. They are actually indicating to you that it's safe for you to pass now (remember, left-hand turns from the traffic flow are actually illegal).
Making a left hand turn into San Pancho: The safest way to make a left hand turn into San Pancho is to put your right hand turn signal on and pull off to the right-hand side of the road. Then wait for a pause in traffic and then make the left hand turn into town. Use extreme caution when turning into any small town from a highway.
Driving and Vehicle Regulations: U.S. driver's licenses are valid in Mexico. Mexican law requires that only owners drive their vehicles, or that the owner be inside the vehicle. If not, the vehicle may be seized by Mexican customs and will not be returned under any circumstances. The Government of Mexico strictly regulates the entry of vehicles into Mexico.
Insurance: Mexican insurance is required for all vehicles, including rental vehicles. Mexican auto insurance is sold in most cities and towns on both sides of the border. U.S. automobile liability insurance is not valid in Mexico, nor is most collision and comprehensive coverage issued by U.S. companies. Motor vehicle insurance is considered invalid in Mexico if the driver is found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Road Emergencies and Automobile Accidents: If you have an emergency while driving, the equivalent of "911" in Mexico is "066", but this number is not always answered. If you are driving on a toll highway (or "cuota") or any other major highway, you may contact the Green Angels (Angeles Verdes), a fleet of trucks with bilingual crews. The Green Angels may be reached directly at (01) (55) 5250-8221. If you are unable to call them, pull off to the side of the road and lift the hood of your car; chances are that they will find you.
If you are involved in an automobile accident, you will be taken into police custody until it can be determined who is liable and whether you have the ability to pay any penalty. If you do not have Mexican liability insurance, you may be prevented from departing the country even if you require life-saving medical care, and you are almost certain to spend some time in jail until all parties are satisfied that responsibility has been assigned and adequate financial satisfaction received. Drivers may face criminal charges if injuries or damages are serious.
Road Safety: Avoid driving on Mexican highways at night. Even multi-lane expressways in Mexico often have narrow lanes and steep shoulders. Single-vehicle rollover accidents are common, often resulting in death or serious injury to vehicle occupants. Use extreme caution when approaching towns, driving on curves, and passing large trucks. All vehicle occupants should use seatbelts at all times.
For additional information in English concerning Mexican driver's permits, vehicle inspection, road tax, mandatory insurance, etc., call the Mexican Secretariat of Tourism (SECTUR) at 1-800-44-MEXICO (639-426). Travelers can also consult MexOnline for further information regarding vehicle inspection and importation procedures. For detailed information in Spanish only, visit Mexican Customs' website Importación Temporal de Vehículos ("Temporary Importation of Vehicles"). Travelers are advised to consult with the Mexican Embassy or the nearest Mexican consulate in the United States for additional, detailed information prior to entering Mexico.
Manejando en México - Consejos de seguridad
Para muchos turistas la idea de manejar en México o cualquier otro país extranjero es algo que produce miedo. Eso es lamentable, porque un coche abre todo un nuevo mundo para el viajero, y hace la experiencia más agradable también. Sin embargo, existen algunas diferencias entre las formas de manejar en los EE.UU. o Canadá y México, el conductor debe ser sabio y saber todo lo que hay que saber antes de intentarlo por primera vez. Aquí ofrecemos una lista de las cosas más importantes sobre conducir en México.
Seguridad del tráfico en las carreteras: En un país extranjero, los ciudadanos de EE.UU. pueden encontrar en las carreteras condiciones que difieren significativamente de las de los Estados Unidos. Tenga mucho cuidado al entrar en cualquier población pequeña desde una carretera.
Reglas de tránsito y licencia de los vehículos: las licencias de conducir de EE.UU. son válidas en México. La ley mexicana requiere que sólo los propietarios sólo conduzcan sus vehículos, o que el propietario esté dentro del vehículo. Si no es así, el vehículo puede ser incautado por las aduanas de México y no será devuelto bajo ninguna circunstancia. El Gobierno de México regula estrictamente la entrada de vehículos a México.
Seguros: El seguro de su automóvil es necesario en México, también para los vehículos de alquiler. Un seguro de automóviles en México se vende en la mayoría de las ciudades y pueblos en ambos lados de la frontera. Ningún seguro de E.U. es válido o tiene cobertura en México. Cualquier tipo de seguro se considera inválido si el conductor se encontraban bajo la influencia del alcohol o las drogas durante un accidente.
Situaciones de emergencia vial y accidentes de automóvil: Si usted tiene una emergencia cuando va manejando, el equivalente de "911" en México es "066", aunque puede suceder que no le respondan. Si usted está manejando en una autopista de peaje (o "cuota") o cualquier otra carretera importante, usted puede comunicarse con los Ángeles Verdes, una flota de camionetas de auxilio vial con personal bilingüe. Winter is a good time for adding more whole grains to our diets.  Not only do they fill us up and provide energy but lower cholesterol, too. Start your morning with some oatmeal, yogurt and fruit. Add barley, oats or quinoa to your dinner. Whole grains are also a great source of fiber. If you feel bloated or gassy after, decrease your serving size. Serve with broccoli for more vitamins. This week's column is celebrating the opening of Pico de Gallo Gourmet Store in Sayulita! Pico de Gallo has all of the goodies that are hard to find here without a day trip to Vallarta and lots of searching. After finishing your workout upstairs at Power Gym, walk on down to the store and get some Vitamin Water, Odwalla juice or locally made snacks. Pico de Gallo has granola, teas and local coffees, too. There is a great selection of culinary spices and specialty oils to spice up your meals. El invierno es un buen momento para agregar más granos integrales a nuestra dieta. No sólo nos llenan y proporcionan energía, sino también reducen el colesterol. Notes from the Ranch
These are my boots. My working, taking care of myself, hauling  horse manure, building a chicken coop, making a good life boots. I value them as if they were made of solid gold. They personify freedom to me. They are my badges of self- sufficiency. For a long time after I moved to Mexico, I wore flip flops or sandals. It was a freedom from boots but now that I look back, I sure didn't get much physical labor done. I built my massage business, raised my son and put my farm roots to the side. This last year was the time to put my boots on again. No more waiting for someone to fill my boots; no more asking for help. I feel my most authentic in my boots. Pull on a pair of jeans, some work gloves, my cowboy hat and I am ready for anything. Barbed wire fence needs fixing? Let me grab my tools. Post hole needs dug? Got it covered. The joke in my family was that I was born behind a wheelbarrow. It always embarrassed me a bit. My Mom sent me to "finishing school" when I was 13. I learned to be a "lady". But the moment I was done, the dress was thrown to the back of the closet, the boots were pulled on and I took off for my grandparent's farm with a book and a dog. I am strong; no size 4 here. That was also something that haunted me: not being skinny. Now, I embrace my muscles. I can lift, haul and carry. Wanna arm wrestle? Things I am grateful for: my biceps, my leather work gloves and cool, clear water.
Notas del Rancho
Estas son mis botas. Mi trabajo, cuidar de mí misma, acarrear estiércol de caballo, construir un gallinero, hace una buena vida con botas. Las valoro como si fueran de oro macizo. Para mi ellas personifican la libertad. Son mis insignias de la autosuficiencia.
Durante mucho tiempo desde que me mudé a México, usé chanclas o sandalias. Era una libertad después de las botas, pero ahora que miro hacia atrás estoy segura que no hacía mucho trabajo físico. Construí mi negocio de masajes, crié a mi hijo y puse mis raíces agrícolas a un lado. Este último año fue el momento de ponerme de nuevo las botas. No hay que esperar a alguien para que llene las botas, no necesito más pedir ayuda.
Me siento mucho más auténtica en mis botas. Con un par de pantalones de mezclilla, unos guantes de trabajo y mi sombrero vaquero estoy lista para cualquier cosa. ¿Se necesita fijar la cerca de alambre de púas? Voy por mis herramientas, ¿se necesita excavar un hoyo para poner un poste? Lo tengo cubierto.
La broma en mi familia era que yo había nacido detrás de una carretilla. Siempre me avergonzaba un poco. Mi mamá me mandó a "terminar la escuela", cuando tenía 13 años. Aprendí a ser una "dama". Pero por el momento se acabó, mandé el vestido al fondo del armario, las botas me jalan y me sacan a la granja de mi abuelo con un libro y un perro.
Soy fuerte, la talla 4 no existe aqui. Eso fue también algo que me perseguía: no ser flaca. Ahora, me abrazo a mis músculos. Puedo levantar, transportar y llevar. ¿Quiere jugar a las vencidas?
Cosas por las que me siento agradecida: mis bíceps, mis guantes de cuero y el agua fresca y clara.

What do you do in San Pancho? I am a third generation fisherman in San Pancho. My father has been fishing for 60 years now and he passed his passion and skills of fishing on to me. Were you born in San Pancho? Yes, I was born in San  Pancho and have lived here my entire life. ¿Naciste en San Pancho? Sí, yo nací en San Pancho y han vivido aquí toda mi vida.
How do you see the town in comparison to how it was before culturally/socially/economically? San Pancho was so cheap 20 years ago. The town had a lot less people too. Now it's very expensive and the number of people has doubled. I don't mind it though because it helps my fishing business.
¿Como ves al pueblo ahora en comparacion a como lo viste antes culturaly/socialy/economicamente? San Pancho era tan barato hace 20 años. El pueblo tenía mucha menos gente también. Ahora es muy caro y el número de personas se ha duplicado. No me importa si es porque ayuda a mi negocio de pesca.
Will you leave San Pancho? No, because my family and work are here. I have no reason to leave. ¿Dejarías San Pancho? No, porque mi familia y el trabajo está aquí. No tengo ningún motivo para marcharse.
Is there a story you want to share with us? In January I took a  group out fishing and they caught a red snapper that was 48.6 pounds which is the biggest I've ever caught and was a near world record. ¿Hay una anecdota que quieres compartir con nosotros? En enero me llevó a un grupo de pesca y cogieron un pargo rojo que fue de 48.6 libras que es el más grande que he capturado y fue un récord mundial próximo.
