There are some who might say that caring for a 17-month old is simply a physical demand-feeding, lifting, changing, walking, dancing. Others would say it puts demands on the brain to make sure she receives the needed mental stimulation for her intellect to develop properly. Certainly child care involves both physical and mental activity, but I have found that spending the day with my granddaughter is also an opportunity to learn theology.
Taking care of Samantha means that some of my days are slower and conducted at a lower level. When we go out into the yard, we may spend a long time at the birdbath, removing leaves, stirring up the water and examining whatever creatures may have made their way into that water. We have studied tiny ants crawling on the rim and miniature larvae of some kind, wiggling their tails at breakneck speed through the water. Recently, we stood there long enough to notice two fat worms stretched out on the soggy earth near the base of the birdbath. Sammy gave out squeals of delight when I gently touched one and then the other and they squirmed under some leaves.
Being with Samantha reminds me that the first part of doing theology, is pausing and noticing. Like it may be for you, my life can be busy and demanding life. My life can be too much filled with my agenda, my purposes, myself. When I take time to quiet myself and to pause, I am better able to notice God's quiet and gracious ways.
When I am on Samantha's schedule, I see things I never would otherwise see. When I do, I am reminded of the creativity and thoughtfulness of God. When Moses was tending sheep, a mostly boring job, I suspect, he noticed a burning bush and turned aside to really look at it and found God. I have discovered that there are burning bushes everywhere, that the wonder of God is being revealed around every corner, and that slowing down to notice puts me in touch with God in new and deeper ways.
The first Sunday of October is designated for the Peacemaking Offering. Peace is more than the absence of war. The Hebrew word for peace, shalom, stretches our understanding to include well-being, completeness, welfare of both individuals and the community. That more sweeping understanding of peace also informs how we use the offering, so that this year, our congregation's share of the offering will be used in support of a ministry with immigrants who are in prison in Massachusetts.
Now you may be wondering about the connection between the offering and my reflection on pausing to notice God at work. Whatever we do to partner with God in working for shalom, whatever we do to live in creative and life-supporting ways for creation, are opportunities to witness the divine and witness to the divine.
Take time to notice and to delight in God.
Mary

STEWARDSHIP
No, it is not 2012 yet but it is officially Fall , the new school year is here and it always reminds many of us of new beginnings. It also is a very busy season-sports and other activities, Halloween, Thanksgiving and then Christmas-where does the time go? Your Stewardship Committee is studying and working on the finances of FPC and trying to keep our budget balanced with income from contributions, endowment funds and some new activities. We are grateful for the participation we saw last year for the operating campaign, Extra Measure, Stone Soup and the hundreds of volunteer hours by so many of you. Stay tuned for more information concerning the results for 2011-with all our efforts, we expect and pray that our financial results will stay on trend and show a big improvement over the last several years. We want to continue and even improve that trend in 2012. It is important for all of us at FPC to provide for the future of FPC, its activities and our Mission as a Congregation: "To know and Share God's Grace in Jesus Christ". Please take a look at the attached tables and begin to prayerfully consider your pledge for 2012-please consider raising your pledge . If you do not pledge, please think about starting-we need everyone to participate! |

Creativ e Learning @FPC
I wake up every morning knowing that God has work for me to do, and you can too. Share the blessings of your life with children who need you. Creative Learning @ FPC was designed as an opportunity for the people of our church (and the community) to do mission in Stamford, right in our own building. Once the building was dark after 5pm. Now there is wonderful life and energy here. We who spend the afternoons together can attest to life changing relationships for all of us; the adults as well as the kids. I wish each of you could be part of their growing. One man taught us to grow fresh vegetables, which we are harvesting and enjoying this fall. A woman taught some to sew pot holders for gifts. A music teacher prepared the children to perform for their parents and friends by singing weekly with us. Another taught children how to reshelve a books by turning down the one next to it. A man helped a boy research tsunamis for a report and some high school students taught us to make friendship bracelets. Little acts. Large impact. We are seeking more volunteers. Our children will bring trumpets, flute, violin, piano music and recorders this year as they seek to become more musical. Can you teach them? They will need people to read with them. They need help with math. They want to learn computer skills. Each needs to know that someone feels that he or she is important enough to spend time and effort on them. "Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you go where you don't know and never be the same? Will you let my love be shown? Will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?" (from The Summons by John Bell) Let your heart and your life be changed. I invite you. Listen for God's call to you. You can call me at 203 965-8390, or by email at: jmcreativelearning@gmail.com or stop in between 3 and 6:30 pm any school day and feel what God is doing here. (We are in the classrooms under the church office.) Please keep praying for God's leadership as we do this work together. Joanie Merrell |

November 12th Come one, come all to an evening of merriment and song. We are again planning an event to raise our hearts in music and fellowship...and it is all for a good cause. The cost of the lounge kitchen renovation will exceed our original estimates so we need to raise additional funds. And what better way to do it than an evening of music. Jim Wetherald and his troupe of talented performers are planning and incredible event. It will be an evening to remember! What we need from all of you: - Save the date and plan to attend...this is a fundraiser!
- Bring your friends...as many as possible!
If you are interested in helping to make the event a huge success, please contact Cris Harter or Juanita Williams. Stay tuned for more information...we will be selling tickets after Sunday service during coffee hour later in the Fall. |
The Christmas Bazaar is coming to FPC again this year !!! FPC will hold a Christmas Bazaar this year on December 4th during the Christmas Brunch. Once again you will be able to find that wonderful hostess gift, delectable sweet or fabulous basket of treasurers. Because the bazaar is a fundraiser we depend on donations to fill the baskets, people to bake the sweets and hands to make homemade hats, scarfs and mittens. The proceeds from the bazaar will again support the efforts to renovate the lounge kitchen so please be generous. Contact Ellen Greene or Cris Harter if you have a treasure to offer, talent to share or interesting antique item. Everything needs to be in excellent condition (like new) or aged with elegance. Let us make this year's bazaar the best ever! And don't forget...plan to attend and spend.
