Kick Off Your Green Fair or Green Challenge with a Film!
Inspire your community! Sustainable Hunterdon has acquired the public screening rights to three highly motivating environmental films. The films are available for loan, free of charge, to any Hunterdon municipality interested in hosting a screening. Film screenings are a great way to launch a Green Challenge (10 pts) or to kick off a Green Fair (10 pts). A brief description and trailer for each film is listed below, along with a few "green challenge" ideas. To reserve a film for your upcoming Green Event, contact Tara Shepherd, 908-788-5553.

Bag It: Challenge Ideas
1. Participate in a Weeklong Plastic Detox- Challenge your community to commit to going plastic-free for one week, starting on the day of the screening. This means ditching plastic bags, plastic beverage bottles, disposable plastic packaging and to-go coffee cups (to name a few), and replacing them with reusable bottles, bags, and containers.
2. Organize a Waterway Cleanup- Billions of plastic bags and bottles end up in our waterways each year. Invite the community to clean up a local body of water; this is a great way to reduce plastic pollution and bring your community together to take action.
3. Become a Bag It Town- Start changing the habits of every consumer in your town by promoting the use of resuable bags! Or, go one step further and local ordinance to make your community plastic bag free and becoming a Bag It Town!

Human Footprint: Challenge Ideas
1. Introduce "The 100 Mile Diet"- Based on the book "The 100-Mile Diet: A Year of Local Eating" by Alisa Smith and J.B. Mackinnon, encourage your community to source their foods within a 100 mile radius. This can mean participating in a community garden, shopping local farmers markets, farms and farm stands, or finding local restaurants that serve locally produced food!
2. "Buy Sustainably" Challenge- Remind residents to ask themselves, "Do I really need to buy this?" If the answer is yes, challenge further by encouraging them to "Buy Local", "Buy Fair Trade", "Buy Green" and "Buy it to Last". Engage local merchants to help identify and promote appropriate products in their store displays.

The Clean Bin Project: Green Challenge Ideas
1. Re-commit to recycling! Challenge households to increase their recyclables by 10%- include glass, aluminum, paper, magazines, etc. Whatever is appropriate in your area.
2. Countertop composting. Provide residents with information on how to set up a countertop compost container and the value of composting! Strive for every household to compost!
3. Take Out Container Challenge- Challenge residents to give up take out containers for one month. Encourage them to bring glass containers from home when going out to eat.
