Slow down and save!
Each 5 MPH you drive over 60 MPH is like paying an additional $0.24 per gallon.

HART has joined with the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority and members of the I-95 Corridor Coalition to promote the "Drive Green, Save Green"

eco-driving campaign.

The goal of the awareness campaign is to educate drivers about easy changes they can make to reduce fuel consumption and wear and tear on their vehicles - simultaneously saving money and reducing environmental impacts.

  "Walking School Buses"

Mark the Start of the New School Year

September marks the start of a new school year. For many Hunterdon communities, it also marks the return of "walking school buses" as part of the Hunterdon County Safe Routes to School Program, facilitated by HART.

"A walking school bus is just like the regular yellow school bus," says John Stevenson, HART Safe Routes to School Coordinator.  "The difference is that students are "picked up" on foot and walk, rather than ride, to school."

A new report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Trust for America's Health, indicates that almost 16% of New Jersey's children are obese and that 29% New Jersey's children don't get the recommended one hour of physical activity per day.

Ten elementary schools currently participate in the Hunterdon County Safe Routes to School Program, facilitated by HART.

 Promotion Encourages Carpool Formation

Following the success of similar incentive programs, HART has introduced a new promotion to encourage commuters to give carpooling a try. New Hunterdon-bound carpools that register with HART from September 6- October 31, 2011, and share a ride for 24 days will be eligible to receive a gift card for groceries (restrictions apply).

"Gas prices have moderated a bit recently, but commuters are still feeling a pinch at the grocery store," says Christina Edzenga, HART commuter services manager. "So, we thought we'd change up our traditional gas card incentive program."

"Research shows that making a lifestyle change takes about two months," says Tara Shepherd, executive director.   "If someone can stick with a new routine, like carpooling, they are more likely to continue the new behavior."  According to Shepherd, approximately 90% of commuters who have participated in similar HART incentives have continued to carpool beyond the promotional period. HART supports more than 1,000 carpoolers traveling to Hunterdon County worksites.
