Bike Rodeos Highlight June
Safe Routes to School Program

As Hunterdon students prepare for the start of summer vacation, many are brushing up on their bicycle skills thanks to several bicycle rodeos sponsored by HART as part of the Hunterdon County Safe Routes to School program.

"Bike rodeos are a great way to help children develop basic bicycle skills and to make bicycle safety messaging fun," says John Stevenson, HART Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator.

During the rodeo, children are instructed through a series of drill designed to improve their coordination, confidence on the bicycle and reinforce the rules of the road.   Drills include, "the weave", for handling, "stop-look left, right, left", and signaling and scanning.   HART staff conduct helmet fittings and remind students of the importance of wearing a helmet everytime they ride. Participation in the rodeos is voluntary. Funding for the rodeos is made possible through the Federal Highway Administration Safe Routes to School program.

Bicycle rodeos have been held recently at Frenchtown Elementary School, Stockton Borough School, and Califon Public School. A rodeo is also scheduled at High Bridge Elementary School later this month.
