5 Days and Counting
There are just five days remaining until the start of
the Vintage Band Festival 2010 on August 5. Our headquarters at 23/25
Bridge Square is open for business, the Official Program is on the
street, posters are up all over town, the big city media has begun to
take notice, and the bands are in last-minute rehearsals. The VBF 2010 website
has all the details and there's still plenty of time to become a fan of
Vintage Band Festival on Facebook and follow us on Twitter (VBF2010).
The cultural exchange opportunities that the Festival offers are
endless. The wind band of young people from Finland will arrive on
Tuesday and will be hosted by families of Northfield High School Band
members. The annual conference of the Historic Brass Society (which is
concurrent with VBF 2010) brings musicologists and music historians
together from all over the nation to share papers and discuss the finer
points of brass music. Tscheranka Kappele, a brass ensemble from
Austria, will be able to interact with Minnesota bands from St. Paul
(Bavarian Musikmeisters) and New Ulm (the New Ulm Original German Band)
and compare notes on style similarities and differences. Listeners can
compare the New Orleans jazz sound of the Jack Brass Band with the shout
band style of South Carolina's Kenny Carr and the Tigers. There are
four different Civil War era bands to enjoy. Clearly, the choices and
experiences will be many.
Here's a couple of tips. Concert goers should consider bringing
chairs or a blanket for the outdoor events. "We provide the music, you
bring your seat." Carry some sunscreen or an umbrella in case you end up
in the sun during our afternoon concerts. Don't forget your canteen or
bottle of water if you plan to stay for several hours.
Be sure to visit
VBF HQ to purchase T-shirts and CDs, reserve tickets for the limited
seating events, make donations, pick up a program or have your questions
answered. There's a nifty display of vintage instruments to check out
as well.
It's going to be a wonderful weekend of music. The Vintage Band
Festival 2010 takes place August 5-8 in Northfield. See you there!

Lunch, Learn, and Listen
We've made mention of several special events during the course of the Festival: the Brass and Organ recitals, the Vintage Base Ball Game, the Vintage Dance, the Battle of the Bands. There's one more that we've forgotten to mention.
The Lunch, Learn, and Listen concerts take place each day of the Festival at Butler's Steak and Ale. These are opportunities to enjoy a special lunch menu and get up close and personal with four different ensembles. The schedule is this:
12 p.m. Thursday, August 5--Chestnut Brass Company 12 p.m. Friday, August 6--Dodworth Saxhorn Band 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 7--Tschecharanka Kappele 1:00 p.m. Sunday, August 8--Kentucky Baroque Trumpets
