Vintage Base Ball and Battle of the Bands

Jack Brass Jazz BandIt's true. There are over 100 performances by the Vintage Band Festival bands. But there's more to the weekend than that.

On Saturday, August 7 at noon, on the banks of the Cannon River, the Battle of the Bands will be renewed. The 1st Brigade Band will take on Newberry's Victorian Cornet Band for the audience favorite. Everyone in attendance gets to vote with their hands, the most claps wins!

At 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, a game of Vintage Base Ball will be played on the Old Main Green at St. Olaf College accompanied by the Independent Silver Band. We understood the significance of the contest when we got a call from the ISB asking which set of rules would apply. Apparently, the musical accompaniment  is closely connected to the rules. Who knew?

Historic Brass Society Annual Conference

HBS logoThe Historic Brass Society invites you to participate in its Early Brass Festival Conference which is taking place concurrently with the Vintage Band Festival in Northfield.  It is open to all interested music or history enthusiasts.

The HBS is a gathering of scholars, performers, and others from all over the world,  and presents a series of interesting lectures, and small ensemble sessions on period instruments. Because the HBS activities are primarily in the mornings, there are no conflicts with most Vintage Band Festival performances.

HBS sessions start on Friday, August 6 and end on Sunday afternoon, August 8. There is still time to register for this fantastic conference. Don't delay!

For more information go to the HBS website or contact HBS president Jeffrey Nussbaum directly at president@historicbrass.org.
Vintage Dance and An Evening of Vaudeville

Jack Brass Jazz BandSaturday evening, August 7, at the Northfield Ballroom, the Vintage Dance will take place.  Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the Grand march steps off at 8:30. Dancing is from 8:30 - 11:00. Musical accompaniment will  feature The Dodworth Saxhorn Band of Ann Arbor, Michigan and the dance will be led by dance instructor/caller Robin Nelson.

The Grand March will be led by costumed members of the 1st Wisconsin Infantry Brigade, followed by a variety of period dances including polkas, contra dances, schottisches, reels and waltzes.

No previous dance experience is required; no dance partner is needed! Dance instruction will be provided from 8:00 - 8:30 p.m. and is recommended for all participants. Dance instruction will also be provided before each dance and "called" out after the music gets underway. All ages are welcome, but participation in the dance is recommended for ages 10 and up.

The final event of the Festival will take place on Sunday night, August 8. Titled "An Evening of Vaudeville
," the program begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Grand Event Center in downtown Northfield. An Evening of Vaudeville features the Carleton North Star Cinema Orchestra, slapstick humor, stupid pet tricks, and silent motion pictures with orchestral accompaniment. The Grand has a capacity of 200 persons, so make your pin donation and reservation early.

Both of these events have limited seating and require advance reservations. Go to the Vintage Band Festival website for details on how to make your reservations.
