Chestnut Brass Company

The
Grammy-winning Chestnut Brass Company has
earned international acclaim for brilliant performances on modern and
historical brass instruments. Since beginning as a street band in Philadelphia
in 1977, they have performed in North and South America, Europe, the Caribbean,
and Asia.
As
curators of the sounds of ancient and antique brasses, the Chestnut Brass Company have been at the forefront of
the period-instrument revival with performances on cornetti, sacbuts, keyed
bugles and saxhorns. The quintet continues to collect antique brass instruments
and to research the literature and performance practice of these instruments.
The
chamber ensemble is active in the performance and commissioning of contemporary
music, and has introduced
numerous new works to audiences around the country. Composers who have written
works for the Chestnut Brass Company, or have been commissioned by the Chestnut
Brass Company, include Richard Wernick, Peter Schickele, Leslie Bassett, Eric
Stokes, Theodore Antoniou, Jan Krzywicki, and Paul Basler. The brass quintet
has received awards for commissioning and performance from the NEA, the
Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Chamber Music America and Meet the Composer.

 1st Brigade Band
In 1864 eighteen
men from the Brodhead Brass Band enlisted
in the Union Army as the band of the 1st Brigade, 3d Division, 15th Army
Corps.
They left their rural Wisconsin homes to participate, under the command
of
General William T. Sherman, in the campaigns of Northern Georgia and the
Carolinas. The "Tradition of Excellence" that these men established,
more than 130 years ago lives on today with the members of Wisconsin's 1st
Brigade Band.
While the abundant
written and pictorial materials remain,
the mellow sounds of the brass bands of the 1860's were lost until the
1st
Brigade Band, starting in 1964, began to locate and restore the dented
and
broken instruments and to retrieve and reconstruct the yellowed and torn
music.
Through their work you can now hear what Presidents Lincoln and Davis,
Generals
Lee and Grant, and their contemporaries heard.
More than eighty
volunteers, men and women, make up the
1st Brigade Band. Widely varied in age and occupation, they come from
many
communities, bringing with them a common interest in their musical
heritage.
During a typical year, they will meet their audience more than forty
times, in
concerts, parades, military balls, and worship services, presenting
their
educational and entertaining programs.

Jack Brass Band
The
crack of the snare drum, the blat of the sousaphone, the blaring brass over it
all tells you that the Jack
Brass Band is an infectious machine, one that drives crowd to their feet
and commands them to groove.
Formed in 1999, they are the only New Orleans
style brass band in Minneapolis, and are the ambassadors of the Crescent City's
brass band tradition.
The Jack Brass Band embraces the traditions of New
Orleans jazz, at the same time adding old time blues, rock, hip-hop, pop, funk
and reggae. Following this recipe, they bring to the table an overflowing plate
of greasy down- home music for your soul. "If you like your gumbo spicy
and your music hot, check out the Jack Brass Band," said Wynton Marsalis
after hearing them. Simply put, the Jack Brass Band brings the party to any
event with a rich tradition and a groove that will make you want to get up and
dance to the New Orleans sound.
