Welcome to the third issue of the VBMF e-Newsletter! There are less than 11 months until showtime and we hope you've reserved the dates on your calendar: August 5-8, 2010 in Northfield and surrounding communities.

Between now and the beginning of the festival, we'll highlight one of our national and international bands and one of the Minnesota bands that will play next summer. In this issue we highlight two groups, one that will be appearing during the next seven days (Västerösterbotten) and the other that will be on hand during the festival in 2010 (Russian Horn Capella).

Västerösterbotten will perform during the Defeat of Jesse James Days

Västerösterbotten will be performing in Northfield during Defeat of Jesse James Days weekend, September 10-13, 2009, under the sponsorship of the Vintage Band Festival 2010. The group of seven brass players, all St. Olaf College students, was formed in 2007 and specializes in Scandinavian dance music (polka, schottische, waltz, etc.) and authentic music of the American Civil War.  On Saturday September 12, they will make several short appearances on Division Street in the early afternoon.

On Sunday afternoon, September 13, they will appear in the Grand Parade riding on a Korean War-era transport truck. Parade start is at 2 p.m. and the route begins at the Northfield High School parking lot and continues north along Division Street. In addition to carrying the band, the truck will be pulling a wagon carrying the latest in vintage-band statuery produced by Steve and Judy Swanson of Northfield. The Swansons created a marvelous piece from old musical instruments that graced the Vintage Band Music Festival 2006. They've fashioned a new piece inspired by their first and it will debut this Sunday afternoon in Northfield.

Be sure to catch this youthful act and shout out your support!

The Russians are Coming!!

2009 Crazy Daze

The Russian Horn Capella hails from St. Petersburg. Russian horn music principles are quite unique and different from everything else that is known in the world's music. Each player in the Russian horn orchestra can play only one note with his horn. Seventeen professional musicians each play two to five instruments (a total of seventy-two for the full ensemble) ranging in size from 3.94 inches (10 cm) to 8 feet 2.5 inches (2.5 m). Each instrument is a copper cone, with no cylindrical portion, which creates a unique sound, not that of our modern orchestra horn. Yet, the sounds of all horns in the orchestra merge into accomplished, diverse and astonishing music.

The music the Russian Horn Capella plays first appeared in St. Petersburg in 1751 and could be heard in Russia for about a hundred years. Between the mid-17th century and 2001, the horn music was dormant. In 2001, Sergey Peschansky revived the tradition and today the group is conducted by Dmitry Russo.

There are short videos on the Russian Horn Capella website as well as more information about this amazing group and its tradition. Get ready for a great experience with this ensemble during the 2010 Festival.
