Byron is an extroverted performer who brings the audience into his music. He was the solo trumpeter for big bands that included Lionel Hampton, Woody Herman and the Count Basie Orchestra. Byron has also performed with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and the GRP All Star Big Band; he has played on numerous soundtracks of films and Broadway shows. Philharmonic Concerto Competition Winners
|
First Place over all winner is 14 year old violinist Miranda Liu of Bryn Mawr, PA. She began her music education on the piano at age two with her mother and took her first violin lessons by age four. She has performed in hundreds of concerts in the USA, Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Poland, Belgium, Portugal and Italy, in concert halls such as Carnegie Recital Hall in NY and Verizon Hall in Philadelphia. In addition to her win here, she has also won 1st Prizes at the 2009 American Protégé International Competition and the 2008 OYRS Young Artist Competition. She will perform with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra on the Education Concerts on April 6th and 7th. For more information about Miranda, please visit her website: mirandaliu.com. First Place winner in the Music School division is flutist Allison Cote, a senior at Seekonk High School. She began her studies in flute at the age of ten and has been playing for seven years. She made her concerto debut last year with the Fall River Symphony Orchestra. As a sophomore she earned principal flute in the Massachusetts All-State Orchestra. She will perform with the RIPYO Symphony Orchestra on their May 22 concert. She has been a Music School student for many years, studying with John Curran. Currently Allison is principal flutist for the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and performs regularly in Youth Chamber Ensembles.
Other finalists included violist Alexia DelGiudice from South Easton, MA, violinist Jaclyn Freshman from Newton, MA, violinist Gracie Gilbert from Providence and pianist Doris Xu from Providence.

Philharmonic Audience Invited to Participate in Study Measuring the Economic Value of Local Arts and Culture
At Saturday's concert, staff members from Providence's Department of Art, Culture + Tourism will collect information from concert-goers about event related spending. The very brief audience survey (only 10 questions) is part of Arts & Economic Prosperity IV, a nationwide research study conducted by the Americans for the Arts to evaluate the impact spending by nonprofit arts organizations and their audiences has on the local economy as well as the impact of the recession on the revenue generated by the nonprofit arts industry.

Season Preview:
Music Director Larry Rachleff has designed an A+ Season that is totally irresistible! We open the 2011-2012 Season with a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 plus the triumphant return of pianist Ilya Yakushev performing the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto. In October, popular Guest Conductor Michael Stern returns for a concert that includes the Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique. Larry's back for the November All-Orchestral, All Italian concert that will include Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony and Respighi's Pines of Rome. In the January concert, pianist Alon Goldstein returns for a performance of the Grieg Piano Concerto with Larry & the Orchestra and the program also includes Dvorak's Symphony No. 8. February's America the Beautiful concert features Gershwin's An American in Paris, Copland's Appalachian Spring, and violinist Alex Kerr will perform the WORLD PREMIERE of James Stevenson's Fantasie for Violin. In our March What's Better than Beethoven? concert, the Philharmonic performs his Eroica Symphony and violinist Augustin Hadelich joins them for the Violin Concerto. Philharmonic favorite, cellist Alban Gerhardt joins the Orchestra in the From Russia with Alban concert in April that features Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations and Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony. The 2011-2012 Season concludes in May with a performance of the Brahms German Requiem.
