RUSH HOUR: Friday, January 22nd, 2010
 Please join us for
the third concert of the popular Rush Hour Series on Friday January 22 at 6:30pm
at VMA Arts & Cultural Center,1 Avenue of the Arts, Providence. This concert features world
renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie performing the United States orchestral premiere
of the Ter Veldhuis Barracuda
Concerto.The
Orchestra also performs Berlioz' "Royal Hunt and Storm" and
selected movements of Dvorak's Symphony
No. 6.
DAME EVELYN GLENNIE,
one of the most eclectic and innovative musicians on the scene today, is
constantly redefining the goals and expectations of percussion and creating
performances of such vitality that they almost constitute a new type of
performance. She gives more than 100 performances a year worldwide, performing
with the greatest conductors, orchestras and artists. For the first ten years
of her career virtually every performance she gave was in some way a first. Her
diversity of collaborations have included performances artists such as Nana
Vasconcelos, Kodo, Bela Fleck, Bjork, Bobby McFerrin, Sting, Emmanuel Ax, Kings
Singers, Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Fred Frith.

Back With a Bang
Classical Concert: Saturday, January 23rd, 2010 @ 8pm
Music
Director Larry Rachleff and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra welcome back DAME EVELYN GLENNIE, the first person in musical history to
successfully create and sustain a full-time career as a solo percussionist, for the first classical concert of 2010, BACK WITH A BANG, on Saturday evening, January 23 at 8pm at VMA Arts & Cultural Center, 1
Avenue of the Arts, Providence. This
concert includes Berlioz' "Royal Hunt
and Storm" from Les Troyens and Dvorak's Symphony No. 6 in D major,
Op.60. Ms. Glennie joins the Orchestra performing Masson's Konzertstück for Snare Drum and Orchestra, Vivaldi's Concerto for Piccolo and Strings,
that she arranged for Vibraphone and Strings and the United States orchestral premiere
of Ter Veldhuis's Barracuda Concerto.
Resident Conductor Francisco Noya presents an informal talk about the concert
program in the auditorium before the concert from 7:00-7:25. Larry Rachleff returns to
the stage for conversation immediately following the concert.

TMS Student Spotlight
Matthew Sinno
Matthew
Sinno is a viola student of Music
School faculty member David Rubinstein. He
recently won the Boston Youth Concerto Competition and will perform the Mozart
Sinfonia Concertante in June at Sanders Theater. He began studying viola at the
age of nine, and he was a member of RIPYO for three years and a finalist in the
Concerto Competition. He is a senior at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts, a
member of the New England Conservatory Youth Philharmonic and plans to attend a
conservatory next fall and become a professional violist.
