Dear Members and Friends,      top2
Summer time is almost over and school is starting!

What a great summer it has been for SSCC:

*  We had a huge turnout for our June Stay-Cation trip to India.  In fact, rumor has it plans are in motion for Stay-Cation next year.
Through Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services of Atlanta, we "showered" a Haitian medical evacuee and her escort with furnishings for an apartment available up to a year for her recovery.
* Our 50th Anniversary Team has worked non-stop to implement celebratory events that will continue through October 3.
* Women's Ministries had their annual Spring Luncheon at Campbell-Stone Sandy Springs and met with much approval.
* Craig McDonald, Student Youth Minister, graduated from Seminary and left his position at SSCC to pursue further career dreams.  Schnavia Bronson was recruited to fill the position and is busy with her own plans for SSCC youth.
* Vacaton Bible School participants and volunteers made an educational journey with Joseph from Prison to Palace and even saw God along the way.  Come back next year!
* The July 31 Family Fun Night was a celebration of summer's end with donations accepted for the Youth Scholarship Fund.

That's just a small part of our busy summer.  Thank you to all who contributed their time and talents in immeasurable ways.

Oh," welcome back" to our Early Risers and Sanctuary Choir!  We missed you.

Rev. Erin Reed Cooper, Associate Minister
trunk or treat no 3
A boy with dirty blond hair looks down and watches the mud squish between his toes. His big grin reveals his missing front tooth.  "Can I squish it in my hands?" he asks the adult volunteer.  "Well, the Hebrew people would have used their feet. Can I help you out?"  The boy puts his hands in the big hand of the volunteer, and he steps out of the plastic wading pool filled with mud.  "Now, let's make a brick!" the adult tells the boy.  Together they scoop the mud into the wooden brick form and place it in the sun to dry.  They talk about which inside market shops he had visited.  Another volunteer hoses off his feet, lovingly dries them with a soft towel and helps him wiggle his socks and shoes back on.  On his way back inside he asks the volunteer, "Can I come do this again tomorrow? It's my favorite."  The man looks at the three bricks he has already made, smiles and says, "Sure.  I can't wait to see you."

Back inside the cool church, he finds himself in a busy Egyptian marketplace.  One child is learning to play shuffleboard as a shopkeeper tells her, "Did you know shuffleboard was invented in Egypt?"  Having already had hummus and flatbread at the food market (he didn't much care for the olives), he decides to pass the jewelry shop and the library and head for the Architect's Apprentice, the block area. He remembers that downstairs beside the Nile River they are building a pyramid out of stones covered with God-Sightings.  Each morning his Family Leaders ask him where he saw God that day.  As he stacks wooden blocks, he knows what he's going to tell his leader tomorrow.  "I saw God in the mud."

Volunteers and kids strike an Egyptian pose on the banks of the Nile River.

To the many, many dedicated volunteers who gave of their time, the members and friends who donated and loaned items, the youth who woke early and had the toughest jobs, the parents who signed up and brought their kids, the staff who accommodated and welcomed the chaos, and you who gave your prayers, THANK YOU.  I saw God in you at Vacation Bible School.  And yes, you can come back next year!

anchorFall Programs Centered on Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity
David Sutton, Chair, 2010 Stewardship Campaign
In the coming weeks and months, we will take a close look at the relationship we have with our personal finances, and the other time and talents with which we have all been blessed ... in the context of how we might better invest those gifts as part of our faith development and our personal faith journey.  Developing and sustaining our mission work goals, expanding the SSCC church family, and supporting the church through financial commitment are all key parts of our faith journey.  And all are supported - indeed centered - on the wisdom that is found in the pages of Scripture.

This year's fall campaigns surrounding Stewardship, Mission Development, and Congregational Growth will take a page from Pastor Adam Hamilton's renowned spiritual gifts guide, "Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity."  In this program, Hamilton, Senior Pastor of the 15,000-member United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, takes a biblical look at the difficult and trying economic times in which we find ourselves today ... and how God, even still, has provided the direction and resources we all need to live a life full of the "fruit of the spirit."

As Americans, we've all watched the stock market plunge, retirement savings evaporate, the economy contract and home values plummet.  And there has been a collective sense that it is time to say, "Enough."  When this economic house of cards began to fall, we all knew intuitively that things had to change. We had focused too much of our energy and resources on acquiring more and newer, bigger and better.

Our fall programs will be an invitation for all of us to rediscover the truths previous generations have known - based on wisdom drawn directly from the Bible. The goal of these campaigns will be to provide a template for action, and a source of encouragement and inspiration, as we celebrate what God has done for SSCC in the past year, and as we together cast a vision for where God is leading our congregation in the future.

July 25 Recap

Who am I to stand in God's way?   Isn't it amazing how much things change and yet stay the same?  It was captivating having Mary K. Widener share one of the late Rev. Al Widener's sermons with us on July 25.  She brought to life words written for May 1986 and yet they were just as meaningful today as the day they were first delivered!  If you weren't able to be at worship, you will definitely want to pick up a CD or download the audio file from the SSCC Website.  We so appreciate Mary K.'s willingness to share with us in SSCC's 50th Anniversary celebration!  And, a hearty thank you to Becky Kelly for arranging for Mary K.'s presence with us!!!

Coming Up

What is next for SSCC's  50th Anniversary Celebration?  Make sure you will be in worship at SSCC on August 8 when Rev. Herb Leslie, the first full-time minister of Sandy Springs Christian Church, will be in our pulpit.  You will learn of the evolution of Sandy Springs Christian Church, the evolution of Christianity and the ways God reaches each of us at our own point of need.

Watch for your Anniversary Weekend invitations in the mail beginning mid-August.  We will be hosting a Gala Event (Dinner and Dancing through the Ages) Saturday, September 18, 6-9 p.m. and then celebrating the 50 years of SSCC in a combined worship service on Sunday, September 19 at 10 a.m.   The Rev. Dr. Dick Hamm will preach our 50th Anniversary sermon.  Others in attendance include Rev. Dr. Ray Miles, Georgia Regional Minister; Mary K. Widener, Chair of the Board of Peachtree Christian Church, our sponsoring congregation; many of the Timothys from SSCC and a host of old friends.  Bring your friends and family for a hearty homecoming!

sscc sanctuary 1964

How much does your membership at Sandy Springs Christian Church mean to you?   I've been a member for 23 years, and I cannot imagine my life without the wonderful people of SSCC.  I've been nurtured, loved, mentored, taught, challenged, and given many opportunities to share my gifts.  The 50th Anniversary Committee needs you to share your financial gifts to help us defray the costs of this year's celebratory events.  So, is your membership worth $1 per year, $5 per year, $10 per year, $100 per year?  You decide and bring your check to the 50th Anniversary table in the Centrum.  You will receive a commemorative 50th Anniversary button to wear in honor of your membership at SSCC.

SoulThoughts on Leaving a Legacy
Rev. Linda S. Whitmire
There are so many legacies from which I draw.   My parents left me a powerful set of values and a strong legacy of service and acceptance of others.  My Uncle Carl, of patriotism and humor.  My church history, of strong biblical knowledge and curiosity and humility.  Even the wounds of my life with which I live plant legacies of truth and awareness of my human vulnerability and limitation and my inter-dependence with others.  And this church?  Ah-h....it has invested in me legacies of affirmation and opportunity, of unconditional love and friendships that stand the test of time, of nurtured faith and tested values and growing stewardship.

As we focus on all the blessings left us by others, by our church, by our life experiences, I have been contemplating the legacy I shall leave.  I pray these include the hope of a strong faith, the enduring power of nonjudgmental love, and perhaps even the desire to make of our lives a difference in the world.  As part of this, I have gratefully chosen to invest the monies I will leave behind someday in behalf of the values and organizations in which I firmly believe, primarily my church.

In this, our 50th Anniversary year, we all have the opportunity to consider the legacies we will leave someday, and how as part of this, we can embrace and support the future of the church we love through including Sandy Springs Christian Church in our estate planning.   It's something worth thinking about!

Rev. Randall S. "Randy" Johnson will be with us during the Sunday School hour on August 29.  Randy is Vice President in the Southeast Zone for the Christian Church Foundation, one of the general ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  As stated in previous communication to members and friends, Randy will become a familiar and welcome friend to our congregation over the next two years as our members focus on various ways of establishing our individual legacies to SSCC through estate giving to a Permanent Endowment Fund.

Before joining the foundation in 2001, Randy served pastorates in Indianapolis and Ohio.  He is married to Sandy Johnson with whom he shares three children. With delight and appreciation, we welcome Randy to our fellowship and pulpit!

Fellowship3Q Sunday School Offering/Global Ministries Child Sponsorship
Bryant McDaniel
Your giving in Sunday School from July through September will provide life-changing hope for the two children pictured here from the Family Village Farm in Vellore, India (as part of the Global Ministries Child Sponsorship Program).  Both children come from homes that suffer from extreme poverty.  The beautiful little girl is named Thamizharasi.  She just turned 10.  The handsome boy is named Karthigeyan.  He is 7 and a half.    A more complete bio on each child is posted in the Centrum for your reference.

It is hoped  that our gifts during the third quarter will enable SSCC to provide an annual sponsorship for both children.  We should reach this goal if everyone gives $1.00 a week based on our average attendance.  Please remember that 100% of your donations go directly to meet the needs of the children (i.e., there are no administrative costs).

Both children speak Tamil and are learning English.  You are encouraged to write them at the following address:

SoulMinistry Musings:  What Is "The Gathering?"
Rev. Phil Price, Senior Minister
A few months ago Sharon, our Church Administrator, told me that someone Phil 2 websitehad come to the church looking for a place to hold a book study group, and she said that we just have to meet each other.  Sharon set up the meeting and I was introduced to Laina Orlando.  Laina is a spiritual teacher, guide, coach and author, and in the course of our conversation we found that we share many of the same understandings of God, life and spirituality.

Before very long the conversation shifted from the getting to know you routine to what might be possible if we combined our efforts and worked together.   We were aware that there are many people who have given up on traditional church but who are still thirsty for some kind of spiritual grounding and who want to find an expression of spirituality that honors their curiosity, their questions and that helps them make sense of their sometimes confused and chaotic world.

The conversation continued and other people joined it.  We prayed.  We dreamed.  We did visioning work and what emerged was a plan to offer what we are calling "The Gathering: a Spiritual Experience."  It will be an interfaith exploration of spiritual questions and issues.  It will be an opportunity to hear a wide variety of speakers, authors, musicians, poets and spiritual guides.  It will be a chance to grow, learn, celebrate and connect with other spiritual travelers.

It is an exciting honor to be a part of what is being born here and I invite you to share in this journey and be part of the fun.

The first Gathering was held on July 22 and the following week we offered a concert by Four Stories High, which many of you attended.

The next Gathering is on August 19 with the Rev. Sandra Jackson and me giving talks on "What is MIND?" -- she speaking from a religious point of view and me from a Christian perspective.

FellowshipSSCC Receives Global Mission Designation!
SCC's Mission and Outreach Team recently received notice that SSCC has been granted official designation as a Global Mission Church!  We celebrated this in a recent church service with the presentation of a certificate and by offering a variety of global breads during communion.  Worshipers chose between naan, lavosh, tortillas, croissants and other breads and were asked to reflect on SSCC's commitment to our friends in Christ around the world.

Becoming a Global Mission Church requires successful completion of a variety of steps including regular global prayers, global education, partnerships, participation and support of global projects.  Each week, as a congregation, we affirm our belief in "witnessing, loving and serving from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth," and now we have an official certificate affirming that we put our words into action.  Mission projects that helped us earn this distinction include our youth's annual Mexican Mission, the planning and participation in pilgrimages to India, our continued partnership with Mungeli Christian Hospital, our refugee resettlement work, and our recent efforts assisting Haitian medical evacuees.  Additionally, "Real People Real Faith" lectures by Johnny Wray, "Stay-cation," informational programs by members who served globally (Lauren Hill's presentation on her participation in Tom's Shoe Drop and Danny Gulden's presentation on his mission to Bosnia), and VBS enhanced our standing.  We invite you to join us in upholding our commitment to global mission work by praying for global issues, considering a global mission trip, attending our global educational programs, and supporting our global mission efforts financially, physically or spiritually.

Congratulations, Sandy Springs!!

FellowshipAn Opportunity to Serve and Learn in the Inner City
Floyd Hale
Our Outreach/Missions Ministry has planned an unusual project for our church on Sunday, August 15 at 5:15 p.m.  We plan to offer our youth and adults the opportunity to participate in the TEAM Dinner Program at Trinity House-Big Bethel in downtown Atlanta, near Grady Memorial Hospital.  Trinity House is the home of a very successful residential rehabilitation program for men who were homeless and who are recovering from addiction to alcohol or other drugs.  Many of the men are young, have been in prison, and are very intelligent, remorseful, and articulate.

sscc sanctuary 1964We will have the opportunity to prepare covered dishes to feed 20 of those hungry men and 12 of our youth and adults, who will join the men of Trinity House around a table where we will all share our food and some of our life experiences.  Charlotte and I led a group from Cherry Log Christian Church to a TEAM Dinner about three years ago.  Everyone who participated then found the experience very moving and educational.  We gained a better understanding of and appreciation for each other and what is really important in life.   If you want to furnish bread or a covered dish for us to take to Trinity House on August 15, please call me at 678-402-6238 or email me at hale789@hotmail.com.

FellowshipA Thank You from Craig McDonald
I just wanted to say a quick "thank you" to my family of faith at Sandy Springs.  It has been such a blessing to learn and grow in such a nurturing and encouraging environment.  I remember being a youth on the very same Mexico trips that I later helped to plan.  Certainly, Sandy Springs has been instrumental in my development as a youth, recognizing my call to ministry, and now helping me to recognize and develop gifts for the ministry that God has called me to.

It is a bittersweet moment as I say goodbye to the sacred space we call Sandy Springs and do my best to faithfully pursue where God is directing.  We have always been blessed with some of the most insightful, determined, and gifted youth that I have ever known and it has been an honor to work alongside such amazing sponsors (and the adults aren't bad either!).  Thank you all for being so instrumental in this process, helping me to find out who I am, and most importantly for allowing me into your lives.  I see God in the people, work, and mission of Sandy Springs Christian Church and I thank God that you are part of my life and journey.

I also wanted to say "thank you" for the financial gift that was given to me.  Having just finished seminary and moving into a position where I will not be getting paid (in fact I'll be paying them!!!), that gift was very timely and is being put to good use.  SSCC has been so faithful during my time in seminary, helping me with books, experience, and also a parting gift to help me transition to full time ministry.  Thank you for the many ways you show your support.

Blessings,

FellowshipYouth Ministry Gearing Up for New School Year
Schnavia Bronson, Student Youth Minister
Greetings,

I am excited to bring back our regularly scheduled youth group meetings during sscc sanctuary 1964the month of August. I have developed an interactive curriculum designed to assist our youth with self-awareness, faith and character building. Through the use of sound biblical principles and practical applications, it is my sincere hope that you find this new curriculum advantageous for our youth's personal and spiritual development.  Throughout the implementation process, I invite you to partner with me as we seek to make a difference in the lives of our youth at SSCC- and the community at large. The ultimate goal is to build a foundation that will carry them throughout their Christian faith, personal and professional development.

I welcome all persons who are interested in working with middle and high school aged youth to contact me for volunteer and youth sponsor opportunities (Schnavia@SandySpringsCC.org). Additional information about our new curriculum, ministry outreach projects, youth events and activities will be mailed to all parents and volunteers.  I can't wait...it's gonna be great!!!

Blessings,
