The Reviews Are In!      Covenant                 Rev. Erin Reed Cooper, Associate Minister

People areErin website talking about the children's wonderful performance of "From The Realms of Glory" at the 9 and 11 o'clock services on December 20!  The children have spent the last two months working on the pageant, giving up their Saturday mornings to rehearse, learn about the content, and develop rich characters for this performance.

We knew that this script was going to be a challenge for our children, but after lengthy discussion we realized that they were definitely up to it.  We have a significant number of children in upper elementary and middle school who are very bright, personable and deep.  Their personalities were able to sparkle in the roles of the play.  With the additional roles of the angel chorus, even the youngest of our children were able to add their gifts to the performance.

It was truly a joy to work with these amazing children, their wonderful and dedicated parents, but especially working with Larri Bass, with whom I was able to share a vision and a hope, and she was able to put it into action.  I'm so grateful and can't wait for the next one!

"I have never worked with a more talented group of children! Also, I could not have asked for more interested and cooperative parents.  Everyone deserves a standing ovation.  Thank you all!!!"  Larri Bass-- Director

"The substance or content ... of the children's program was excellent as well as the children's preparation and presentation! Thank you for a wonderful Christmas gift!"  Floyd Hale

"Kudos on the best Christmas play I've ever witnessed- Brilliant!- A great story of Light!"  Jan Brodie

"We are all so delighted and impressed by the children's' Christmas Pageant at the service on Sunday.  They all did such a good job speaking their lines and singing."  John Robeck

"The children's play was brilliant and magical!" Julie Squires

"I was smiling through the entire pageant.  I loved it!"  Ellie Byrd

Why Join a Covenant Group?   Soul                                          Rev. Betty Halford,
                                                                                            Assoc. Minister of Pastoral Care

OvBetty Halforder a year ago, SSCC embarked on a mission to offer people a way to connect more personally in small groups.  This culminated in the formation of Covenant Groups that meet monthly to discuss real life issues in the lives of Christians.  Five groups started in September of this year.  Listen to what a couple of the participants had to say about their Covenant Group experience:

"My experience with our Covenant Group has been a very nice surprise," says Kathy Elliott.  "I really did not know what to expect, but I do know that the last group I had attended in a covenant style in the evening had been a struggle for me to keep awake.  This wquote 1as about ten years ago and it was more like a Bible study than a personal reflection of Christian topics that are Biblically based.  I feel and appreciate the bond that has presented itself within our group.  I particularly love that we keep on time and this time is shared equally among the group."

Why join a Covenant Group?  Mary Shehan of the Chrysalis Group shares her experience with us.  "Chrysalis has been together for some time as a small group, so we've had a head start in bonding as covenant quote 2a Covenant group. With that and the format/protocol of the meeting I feel very safe in expressing my most true and secret thoughts (as vulnerable as that can be).  The idea of commitment isn't just to show up at a meeting, but to participate fully and then take very specific actions and risks based on what is revealed. Our first group on Prayer made a huge difference to me in overcoming a great fear.  I'm very grateful that our church is taking this path; God is transforming our hearts through each other."

Covenant group meetings are structured and focused, and each group has a member/facilitator to guide the discussions.  Not currently a member of a group and would like to know more about the groups and how you can join?

Please join us for our next Covenant Group Informational Meeting on either Sunday, February 21 from 4:00-6:00 pm or Monday, February 22 from 6:00- 8:00 pm.  Additional details will be in the February Wellspring and Chalice Chats.

49th Annual Hanging of the Greens   Fellowship

The 49th annual Hanging of the Greens service on December 6 was once again the festive event we have come to love.  It is our traditional time of decorating the sanctuary and singing the praises of Advent.  Although it is a very familiar event for most members, each year our newest members add a very special moment when they bring forward their personal Chrismons and place them on the tree.  It is symbolic of the new life we celebrate and nourish in this congregation.

Ministry Musings      Musings                                               Rev. Philip Price, Senior Minister
Happy New Year!

The nePhil 2 websitew year is not a traditional part of the liturgical church year but what it celebrates and represents is certainly in line with much of what we hold to be true.

Our New Year celebrations allow us to imagine for a moment that the past is behind us and that a better future is before us.  This is the message of the gospel!  The difference is that in God's calendar any day can be a 'New Year's Day.'

The spiritual practice of forgiveness allows our past to be a sound teacher and frees us from being trapped in anger and negative emotional attachments.  It is a sad and well proven truth that our emotional attachments become the building materials out of which we form our future.  Emotions affect thoughts, thoughts create action/inaction, and actions shape our future.  If we harbor anger, we become combative.   When we cling to hurt, we build safe castles of detachment where no one can touch us.  When we can't let go of failure we build safe, innocuous places where we don't allow ourselves to take risks.

Forgiveness breaks the emotional ties and frees us to build a future based on a splendid vision of the future rather than out of the junk of the past.

Forgiveness is never easy because the person you HAVE to forgive NEVER deserves it.  Just remember, forgiveness doesn't let them off the hook, IT LET'S YOU OFF THE HOOK.  They don't deserve it, take that for granted, you forgive because YOU deserve it.  Why should you build your life out of the junk of someone else's sin?  Forgive.  Let it go.  Cut the emotional ties.  Build your future out of your best dreams rather than previous unfortunate experiences.

Once forgiveness is offered and experienced, you are free to DREAM.  What excites you?  What stirs your passion?  Where do you look and see God crying?  Where do you see God laughing?  Imagine yourself fully engaged, offering your best gifts to the world without reservation or holding back.  This is life lived for the "glory of God."  This is a life where the spirit blows freely through you and you live in the joy of being a blessing.

The secular world makes resolutions.  We make covenants and wrap them in prayer.

We live on the cusp of time and New Year's is one of those times we allow ourselves to be aware of this deep truth.

Youth Ministries   Fellowship                               Craig McDonald, Director of Youth Ministries
I know that this holiday season has been busy for all of you, and it has been the same for the SSCC youth!  We had our Young Adult Sunday where we were led in a wonderful worship experience.  It was a great opportunity for them to share their experiences and for us to reaffirm our faith and support of them.

This month we have our annual youth regional assembly called Youth-a-Palooza 'Unmasked.'  This is one of our biggest events of the year, and we've been gearing up for months!  It is a great time for us to come together, meet, and worship with youth from all over Georgia.  As we leave to go build relationships, please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

SSCC Women Kick Off the Christmas Season  Office
Did your Christmas season begin the day after Thanksgiving with the mall crowds?  Were you biting your tongue as the family wrestled to put the Christmas tree straight in the stand and the strand of lights wouldn't work after they were hung?  Ahhh...the joys of Christmas.  This was the first year I started the season by joining SSCC women and friends for a wonderful communion service and brunch on December 5. Guest preacher Julie Johnson reminded the sanctuary of Christmas-dressed women that this is the season of anticipation--pregnant with possibilities.  The service closed with a prayer circle that stretched all the way around the sanctuary as Silent Night was sung.  The energy and spirit were palpable.

Next, in Dunlap Hall, SSCC men served a Torbert-prepared three course meal while Ellie Byrd shared her amazing piano talents.  What a treat to have your water glass attentively filled by your senior pastor in his red vest!  Erin wore a pair of Dorothy Dayton's shoes and reminded everyone to remember those who could not be with us.  More musical talents were shared before everyone carried the true joy and spirit of the season out into the world.  Thanks to Charlotte Hale and Women's Ministries for organizing the event.  Let me encourage all women to consider making this your traditional way to start the season!

Educational Ministries--A Wonderful Year  Office         Rev. Erin Reed Cooper,

                                                                            Associate Minister
Erin website Dear Friends,

I am so thankful for the ministries that have grown and flourished in the 2009 church year.  As I take down my old calendar, it brings me such joy to see the amazing things that have taken place in Children and Youth Ministries, as well as the church as a whole.  In children's ministries, Children Worship & Wonder more than doubled in attendance when it was moved to correlate to the 11 o'clock service, at the request of many young families.  The program has also added some very strong new storytellers.  The Children's Ministry Advisory Council has formed.  This is a group of dedicated adults who are helping to guide and direct our renewed efforts in children and family ministries.  For the first time in known SSCC history, we had a new VBS director.  Stephanie Williams took over the reins from Chris Dalton and Leslie Kahrs, and with the help of many more incredible volunteers, Crocodile Dock was a great success!  Peaceable Adventurers Club has a new theme, "Touching People Jesus Touched," and a reinvested interest and leadership from parents.  The new format has provided very meaningful monthly meetings for our older children.  A new children's Sunday School curriculum is about to be launched, with two new Sunday School teachers.  Put all these together with a successful camping season, meaningful contributions from our children in worship, and wow!  What a year!

Perhaps most telling of the success of this year is our list of children for whom 2009 was a year of Christian growth.  Our baptistry has been filled more times this year than any other year I've been at SSCC.  This year we baptized Evan Bensch, Trenton Brown, Michael McCluskey, Austin Michels, MacKenzie Michels and Sarah Price; we witnessed the confession of faith and membership of Ryan Kahrs and dedicated ourselves to the Christian nurture of Walker Linsley and Lucas Wheeler. These milestones, more than any others, serve as testimony to the seriousness with which SSCC has taken for our children this year.  Thank you.

There's no slowing down as we turn the corner into a new year! Launching the new Paidean Portfolios, adding a relationship with the Christian College of Georgia for Teacher training, a national Children Worship & Wonder training, and a VBS trip to Egypt are just a few of the very exciting changes ahead for our ministry with children.  I am so excited about the direction we are headed, and feel that we have come such a long way in a very short time.  Thank you to all who have made these changes possible.

We do know that 2010 holds many changes for the youth program as well.  We have been so blessed by the ministry that Craig McDonald brings to our youth. Through his time at Columbia Theological Seminary, he has helped to shape the lives of our youth, successfully led one Mexico Mission Trip and is about to lead another, been to Camp Christian, and most importantly, ministered to our youth and their families as they do the hard work of being teenagers.  We are so proud that Craig will graduate with his Masters of Divinity degree this spring.  We are also aware that this brings a change for our ministry with youth.  In anticipation of this change, a search team has been formed to begin to interview candidates to assume leadership in May, when we launch Craig into his ordained ministry.  The team consists of Cindy Brown, Tyler Brown, Andy Torbert, Janet Lochery, Rev. Price and me.  Our ideal candidate would be able to overlap with Craig's ministry, be available to be involved in all aspects of the Mexico trip, and provide our youth with the quality leadership that we have come to expect.  Discussions with Rev. Ray Miles and others have given us several quality leads, and we hope to share good news with you on this very soon.  It is your dedication to our children and youth that make the programs successful.

This New Year's, join me in a prayer of thanksgiving for the amazing things that have happened in 2009.  And join me in joyful anticipation of all the wonderful things that God has in store for us in 2010!

With Peace that Passes Understanding,

College Age Sunday--Coming Home  Office
On Sundacollege age sunday 1y, December 27, our college-aged kids gave the ministers a break and the congregation a treat.  With direction from our Student Youth Minister, Craig McDonald, these young adults delivered a moving service from start to finish.  They repeatedly mentioned how great it is to come back "home" to this church where the students are warmly welcomed and lovingly supported.
In the two mini-sermons, freshmen shared how their faith base has helped them feel God is with them during times of stress, uncertainty, homesickness, prayer and joy. During the Mission Moment, we were told with appreciation of the College Connect Program, where SSCC members stay in touch with our students by sending notes of encouragement, holiday greetings and snacks.  The success of this College Connect Program, and of the entire College Age Sunday Service reflects the strong support Sandy Springs Christian Church gives these youth.

SSCC has mentored an amazing group of young adults, and these kids returned the gift in the readings, the prayers, the special singing performances and heartfelt messages they delivered.  For many, this is a favorite annual service because it highlights the strong bond these kids have for each other, their church and its future.

Trustees, Thank You!  Office                                                      Travis Halford
The Hebrews writer (11:3) talks of "things that are not visible."  While this does not directly apply to the Trustees, much unseen work does happen in our faith community, making it difficult to say "thank you."

We arrive at our church while experiencing inspiration from beautifully cared for flowers, bushes, and trees and knowing the cell tower and DOT work are continually observed (Terry Frost); building and operating systems (HVAC's) receiving as much TLC as possible (Philip Rowell); financial systems and books accurately recording and reporting our financial situation (Virginia Gregory); mission and ministries extending to the larger community through the rental of our facilities with cell tower negotiations successfully handled (Jim Armstrong); security and liability coverage recognizing possible occurrences of unforeseen events (Scott Dalton); legal issues expertly researched and reviewed (Bob Trusty); accurate recording of minutes from meetings combined with valuable church history (Bert Blackburn).  All exercised judgment sourced in the Gospel as we prayed together for wisdom that would lead us in gentleness and kindness while serving the Church of our Lord.

As the outgoing Chair of the Trustees, it has been my honor to serve with this very dedicated group who truly do perform an extremely important, mostly unseen, ministry that helps make possible all we love so dearly within our faith community.  Please give each of those above a big "hug and thank you" when you see them.

Please welcome Scott Dalton as your new incoming Chair of the Board of Trustees.
