Fort Worth Named All America City

Mental Health Connection to participate in

presentation at City Hall

All America City

The National Civic League has named Fort Worth one of ten All America Cities, and you can see the presentation that brought home the honor at the Fort Worth City Council meeting on Tuesday, July 12. The meeting will be held at City Hall, 1000 Throckmorton. In addition to the presentation, you will be able to participate in Mayor Mike Moncrief's final Council meeting and Mayor-elect Betsy Price's swearing in.

Mental Health Connection was cited in the City's entry as one of three organizations that have effectively addressed major challenges in the community. Leaders and others who have been involved with Mental Health Connection traveled to Kansas City in June to participate in the presentation that supported the City's entry. Ten cities were selected for the honor.

In addition to Mental Health Connection, Fort Worth's entry included accomplishments by the Directions Home program, which addresses homelessness; and the We Are Legal (WAL) program, which focuses on cleaning up graffiti in the City. Representatives of each group joined Mayor Mike Moncrief and the Mental Health Connection delegation for the presentations.

2011 Bridging the Gap Date Set

Put November 7 and 8 on your calendar today

The 5th Annual Bridging the Gap Symposium is now set for November 7 and 8, 2011. In 2007, planners committed to five of these Symposiums, with a goal of bringing evidence-based practices to the community faster and transforming the system of care. In November, you will learn how far we have come, in addition to hearing more about system transformation, evidence-based practices and other issues of importance for sustaining the progress made to date.

The final agenda will be posted on the Mental Health Connection Web site by August 1, but you can click here to reserve your space now. For information about the history of Bridging the Gap, click here.

Tarrant Cares Draws Visitors

 Site shows early popularity

Tarrant Cares   Between its launch on March 30 and June 23, Tarrant Cares received more than 830,000 hits. Approximately 45,500 visitors used more than one page within the site.

According to Trilogy, the developer and host for all Network of Care sites across the country, Tarrant Cares is "above and beyond the pack in terms of outreach ... (and) your traffic reflects that."

Organizations throughout the community have been doing a good job in spreading the word about Tarrant Cares. As individuals learn about the site, they are taking advantage of all it has to offer.

MHMR, Columbia University to Study
"Open Minds Open Doors" Anti-Stigma Program
NIMH-funded research to determine effectiveness of curriculum and materials
In the first study of its kind, MHMR of Tarrant County and Columbia University Open Minds Open Doorswill join forces to determine whether the Mental Health Connection curriculum on stigma has a long-term impact on sixth graders. Kris Painter, PhD,  of MHMR and Bruce Link, PhD, of Columbia will serve as Co-Lead Investigators. The grant is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.

The research will study the anti-stigma curriculum developed under the Community Solutions grant in 2005 and still distributed on request by Mental Health Connection. More than 200 teachers in North Texas have used the materials. In addition, New York Assemblyman Peter M. Rivera distributed the curriculum to more than 6,400 schools and 700 school districts throughout New York in 2009. According to Assemblyman Rivera's staff, his office has received approximately 1,000 requests for additional copies.

Arlington ISD has agreed to have its 6th grade health classes participate in the study. Students will be assigned to one of several groups so researchers can compare the effectiveness of the curriculum alone, the curriculum with posters and bookmarks, and the use of the posters and bookmarks alone. In addition, a young adult who has experienced a serious mental illness will speak to some classes to determine whether the curriculum is as effective as the contact alone, and whether the curriculum is enhanced by the contact.

In addition to providing pre- and post-tests, the study will follow students for two years to determine whether the curriculum has a lasting impact on attitudes and behaviors. Researchers will also look at whether the addition of the curriculum and other materials resulted in more students' seeking help.

The funding is scheduled to begin in July 2011, with the classroom presentations beginning in early 2012.
