Cultural Competence Team Plans for 2011
Tarrant County Recognized as National Leader
Virginia Hoft, Mental Health Connection Cultural Competence Chair, was selected to attend the Leadership Academy in Georgetown. She was one of only 50 individuals selected to participate in the event, which focused on improving cultural competency in systems of care.
"In Tarrant County, practitioners want to be better, and executives are willing to admit to gaps while allowing time for their employees to go through the training," said Virginia at the October MHC membership meeting. "That kind of support from the top seems to be rare in most other communities."
Plans for 2011 include more executive-level work with the Georgetown National Center for Cultural Competence. In addition, the ACCESS Committee will be reviewing the possibility of book studies, research reviews and further exploration of cultural considerations.
For more information about MHC's cultural competency plans, email Virginia Hoft.
Welcome to Our New Members
 Campfire, Sundance join the collaboration
Sundance Center and Camp Fire USA in Fort Worth have Sundancejoined Mental Health Connection. Sundance provides treatment in a partial hospital and intensive outpatient day program and operates Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Center is located at 2707 Airport Freeway, on the access road just east of Sylvania.
Camp Fire  Camp Fire USA First Texas Council offers after school care, camping, outdoor education, child care advocacy and training, child care resource and referral, and service learning. The organization worked with Hand in Hand during 2010 to roll out Connect4Success in Hood County. This intensive program helps child care providers learn to work with children who have behavioral, emotional and social issues. The goal is to prevent expulsions while helping children receive understanding and possible early intervention. A second Connect4Success program is planned for Johnson County in 2011.
We are excited to have both of these agencies as a part of Mental Health Connection.
