HHS Regional Director Visits Tarrant County | | Director learns about Mental Health Connection

Marjorie McColl Petty, Regional Director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Region VI, visited Fort Worth in August for an update on Mental Health Connection.
Former Fort Worth Mayor Kenneth Barr and the executive leadership of Mental Health Connection member agencies provided Ms. Petty with information on the organization's history, accomplishments and current activities.
Ms. Petty said she does not know of any other communities that have such an active collaborative effort to improve mental health care services. She pledged to work in partnership with our local community in furthering the Mental Health Connection agenda. |
Advocacy Committee to Review Funding Cuts | | Star-Telegram article provides multiple viewpoints  At its August meeting, the Mental Health Connection Advocacy Committee will discuss proposed funding cuts in mental health services throughout Texas.
In the meantime, Committee Chair Jim McDermott, Ph.D., cites an article that appeared in the "Star-Telegram" on August 10. He has received highly positive feedback from throughout the state because the article effectively includes viewpoints from a variety of sources. Click here to read the article. |

4th annual Symposium focuses on change

At the 2010 Bridging the Gap Symposium on November 8-9, nationally known speakers will address health care reform, drivers for systems change, evidence-based practices, implementation science and engagement skills. The Symposium will be held at the Brown-Lupton University Union at Texas Christian University. Watch for more information and registration materials in September. Master CBT Training on the Way | | Program focuses on clients with multiple diagnoses
Mental Health Connection will pilot a five-day Master Clinical Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Training in September and October.  Peter Jensen, M.D., of the REACH Institute will lead the training in three aspects of CBT: depression, anxiety and disruptive behavior. A key component of the training is integrating techniques to address the needs of children with more than one diagnosis.

Final 2010 CBMCS Training Coming in October | | New trainees will bring community total to over 100
The final 2010 California Brief Multicultural Scale (CBMCS) training will be held October 14, 15, 21 and 22. Priority consideration will be given to agencies with executives who have been through the training. The cost is $100 per person, which includes materials and meals. Payment must be included with the registration form.
This month, providers from 11 agencies will complete the training. ACCESS Committee leaders are determining the next steps toward bringing Tarrant County to full competence in working with clients from all cultures, ethnicities and value systems.

Stay on TRAC Begins | | Team meets to finalize program  Members of the Stay on TRAC (Treatment, Responsibility and Accountability on Campus) team met this month to finalize details for the pilot program in the Keller Independent School District.
Any high school students with alcohol infractions will be able to choose participation in Stay on TRAC instead of mandatory time in the district's alternative school. The program includes an assessment, which will lead to education, intervention and/or treatment, depending on each student's need. Four Mental Health Connection members are providing services at no charge for the first year: ACH Child and Family Services, Lena Pope Home, MHMR of Tarrant County and Santa Fe Youth Services. The MHMR Outcomes and Evaluation team has been contracted to determine the effectiveness of the pilot over a one-year period.

The Glick House Community Counseling Center at Texas Wesleyan University is in the process of going live with DataLink. Family Engagement Support Specialist Wanted | | Ideal candidate is family member
Tarrant County Juvenile Services is seeking a Family Engagement Support Specialist. This individual will help implement improvements for families of youth with mental health issues who come into the jurisdiction of Juvenile Services. The position is funded by the Models for Change project (John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation). As one of two partnering Texas counties in this initiative, Juvenile Services is working closely with MHMR of Tarrant County.
The individual selected will work in an advisory capacity to Juvenile Services to improve family engagement. The ideal candidate will be a family member or caregiver of a young person with mental health needs who also has had experience with Juvenile Services.
