Cultural Competence Team Moves Forward with Speakers, Retreats |

ACCESS Plans Retreat to Train Trainers
ACCESS (Advancing Cultural Confidence and Equity in Standards and Services), the Implementation Team for Cultural Competency issues, is well on its way to helping Tarrant County become more sensitive to all community members. Experts Lenora Reid-Rose and Gloria Morrow, Ph.D., have both visited Fort Worth recently to help determine the next steps. Ms. Reid-Rose is Director of Cultural Competence and Diversity Initiatives for Coordinated Care Services in Monroe County, New York. Dr. Morrow is a clinical psychologist who helped to develop the training curriculum for the California Brief Multicultural Competency Scale (CBMCS).
Executives of Mental Health Connection member agencies will receive training in October and November so they can provide top-down guidance on issues that arise. At the same time, approximately 40 client care providers will receive four days of CBMCS training from Dr. Morrow. From that group, 10 individuals will be selected to receive additional training, coaching and supervision so they can provide the Cultural Competency Workshop to other partner agencies. Over the next two years, it is expected that 700 individuals in the mental health care system will receive the training. The result will be the ability to better serve each individual client with care that is responsive to the family's culture and values. Research Roundtables Bring Providers, Researchers Together on the Issues |

Research Council Presents Final Roundtable of 2009
The Mental Health Connection Research Council recently held its fourth Research Roundtable, focusing on the impact of trauma on developing brains. Uma Rao, M.D., Director of the Adolescent Mood and Addictive Disorders Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, explained the results of research she has conducted. Previous Roundtables have reviewed qualitative research or the collection and use of stories as evaluation data, the efficacy of antipsychotics in Bipolar Disorder with cocaine or methamphetamine addiction, and solution-focused therapy's effect on individuals' productivity at work.
Special thanks go to Dr. Rao and the other presenters: Kirsten Painter, Ph.D., assistant professor in the School of Social Work and Sociology at Texas Women's University; Sean Allen, Ph.D., project director for Hand in Hand; Barbara Perry, Family Evaluation Specialist in the MHMR of Tarrant County Evaluation and Outcomes Division; Vicki Nejtek, Ph.D., Director of Co-occurring Disorders Research at the University of North Texas Health Science Center; and Jon C. Crook, Ph.D., assistant professor at Texas Wesleyan University and Clinical Director of Employee Assistance Programs at Life Synch, Inc.
The Research Council's goal for these sessions has been to provide a forum for current research and evaluative information to be shared and discussed, including its relevance to the local community. The Research Council also saw the Roundtables as an opportunity for mental health professionals to network with researchers. |

Trauma Treatment Moves Forward at Fast Pace |

63 Tarrant County children now enrolled in UT Austin Research Study
Therapists trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy have now enrolled 63 children in the study being conducted by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The goal for the study is 75 children.
Special thanks go to Zeba Salim for working closely with agency intake staff members to create a matrix showing agencies that offer TF-CBT and the way to enter each agency's system. Through her efforts, Mental Health Connection is continuing to find ways to overcome barriers that can prevent young people from getting the TF-CBT services they need. | |
