Happy AllisonSoccer and  T-ball
Spring sports have been a blast!  Thanks to all the great kids, parents and volunteers that help make it all happen.  I am looking forward to a great time of fun and fellowship at both the Soccer Banquet on Monday, May 9th and the T-ball Cookout after the final game on Friday, May 20th.  Don't forget to sign up to bring something when the time comes for these great events.

Also, summer camp is right around the corner!  Stop by the Y office and sign up before it's too late.

CONSTRUCTION HAS BEGUN

On our way to a new Y

Yes, construction has begun!  You may not see it from the road, but crews are inside starting on our great facility.  Thanks so much to each and everyone that has had any part in getting us this far! What great opportunities our new Y will bring to our community.  It will be a place where we can encourage youth development, healthy living for the young and the young at heart, and a place to foster social responsibility in our community.

We aren't just a "gym & swim" we are a place where kids can come after school and be safe, get help with homework, and socialize with their peers in a clean, wholesome environment.  Where moms can come in the middle of the day, unwind in an exercise class or just visit with other moms.  Where adults can shoot pool or just shoot the breeze.  It's going to be a place that we can be proud of.  I hope you are as anxious as I am to see the doors of our facility open and welcome everyone, because the Y is for all of our community.

HEY BUDDY, CAN YOU SPARE A DIME?
Bum has a friendSend a Kid To Camp

The Northumberland Family YMCA and the Northern Neck Family YMCA in Kilmarnock are joining forces to raise money for the YMCA Strong Communities Fund. The "bums" seen in the picture are hanging around the two counties at community events carrying mason jars ready to be filled to help "send a kid to camp."  These jars are placed through out the counties in businesses and homes to help raise funds so that no child is turned away from Y programs for inability to pay.  If you would like to help, come by your YMCA and pick up a jar to fill in your own special way!  Or, simply add your change to a jar when you spot one!  The campaign runs until May 21st and filled jars may be returned to either branch.  Join us for cookies and drinks at a change counting event on May 21st from 10:00-11:00 at either the Bank of Lancaster in Kilmarnock or at Essex Bank in Burgess.  For more information, call the Y at 435-0223 or 580-8901.  Thanks for supporting your local Y!

A VOLUNTEER'S PERSPECTIVE

Volunteer

YMCA: Why do you and your husband choose to volunteer for the Northumberland Family YMCA?

Stacey Lee: Dennis and I both began volunteering with the YMCA so that we could be more involved with our children.  Later, we found it to be our responsibility as members of the community to work with as many children as we possibly could. Sometimes we found we had more of a positive impact on children other than our own. It is a great feeling to have children greet us in the community with hugs. Being a Y volunteer allowed us to make a connection with other children and families.

YMCA: What role in the community do you think the Northumberland Family YMCA fills?

Stacey Lee: We feel the YMCA creates a sense of community through the programs that are offered. It offers a place where everyone regardless of race or economics can be involved.

YMCA: What do you think the new facility will provide for our community?

Stacey Lee: We are looking forward to the new facility.  The facility will be one that we as a community can take pride in supporting.  Aside from the obvious programs and activities that will be offered, the new Y will be an icon of what a community working together can accomplish.

Stacey and Dennis have been volunteering at the YMCA since 2005.  Thank you both for everything you do!
