CONSTRUCTION UPDATE- May 2011 |

|
Dear Friends,
The new Northumberland Family YMCA facility is under construction! Land is being cleared and dumpsters are filled with debris from interior demolition. (We don't want to even peek inside while this phase is in progress.)
The five-lane swimming pool is in the ground awaiting transformation from gray to fabulous shades of aqua and sunlight.
I am told by the Y staff that this project alone drew together more than 100 volunteers working 6,000+ hours, 426 individual contributors, and 557 total gifts. We have a wonderfully generous and caring community and, as many of us know, anything is possible with God's blessings.
Congratulations to all of you for a job well done. On behalf of the Capital Campaign Committee and the Board of Management, I thank you and look forward to greeting you as new members on opening day.

Northumberland chapter of the American Red Cross and the Northumberland Family YMCA are joining efforts to strengthen
services in the county. Recently, Red Cross Volunteer Director, Shirley Grant, and Board Chair Chris Mills received word that a grant through the Jessie Ball Dupont Foundation had been approved. The grant funds will be used to provide swim lessons to 2nd grade children in Northumberland County.
The collaborative effort between the YMCA and Red Cross has already proven success in teaching children how to swim. A similar program has been operating through the Northern Neck Family YMCA and the River Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross. Approximately 100 children have received swim lessons for each of the past 4 years in Lancaster County through a similar grant with the Dupont Foundation. "We are very excited that our Red Cross Chapter will be able to extend services to children here in Northumberland County," commented Shirley Grant.
The swim lesson program will provide every 2nd grade child in the county six lessons, making them 'waterproof'. New swimmers are considered waterproof once they can at least float or hold their head above water to calmly breath. "Swimming is an important skill to have in our county," said Cristian Shirilla, YMCA Extension Director. "Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children in the state of Virginia. And in a community surrounded by open water, teaching children how to swim at a young age will help prevent these types of accidents."
The YMCA's new outdoor pool is currently under construction and once complete will have 5 lanes, a recreational pool and a slide.
