The Northumberland Family YMCA has officially Broken Ground

The Northumberland Family YMCA officially broke ground on June 19th at the Gym Building off of Northumberland Highway in Heathsville.  The day was filled with excitement as over 200 supporters came out to surround the pool and break ground together as a community.  The ceremony included speakers such as Betty Hall, the Capital Campaign Chair, Warren Haynie, Capital Campaign Member, and Denise Munns, Board Chair.  Reverend James Godwin of Heathsville United Methodist Church provided the invocation for the ceremonies, and John Held, Executive Vice President of Omega Protein traveled here from their headquarters in Texas to congratulate our community and encourage the good works of the YMCA.  The record breaking June heat didn't keep our Y families from bouncing in the inflatable moonwalk or sliding down the huge inflatable slide together!  Supporters also enjoyed hotdogs, drinks and snacks together as they took tours of the building and got a taste of exactly what they can expect at the Grand Opening scheduled for early 2012!  Keep your eyes peeled for what comes next!
Flapjack with Applebee's

Pancake's Anyone?

The YMCA, along with Applebee's in Tappahannock, is hosting a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, August 7th from 7-10 AM at Applebee's. Tickets are $7 in advance/$10 at the door.  (Children 2 & under are free).  Purchase tickets from Holly at the YMCA office or from one of our many Y-Summer Camp Kids!  Even if you can't attend the breakfast, feel free to buy a ticket anyway as a donation to our cause!  Proceeds from ticket sales, donations & tips will benefit our Strong Communities Campaign which ensures anyone can participate in our programs regardless of financial ability. The YMCA staff, families, and volunteers will be the servers!  We hope to be able to serve YOU!  Come enjoy a short stack of pancakes for a tall cause!

Youth Super Sports
Building Winners for Life

At the YMCA, youth sports is as much about building character as it is about learning sports skills.

The YMCA introduces Youth Super Sports this fall. Youth Super Sports is the YMCA's new progressive youth sports program that combines the marvelous philosophy of past YMCA youth sports programs with new program concepts. Children learn character values as well as sports skills and tactics by incorporating fun and creative games during every practice. Our "games approach" sessions during each practice are designed to better prepare players for competitions.

There are 3 components to YMCA Super Sports

YMCA Rookies
Non-competitive, developmental program that teaches young players basic skills and strategies of the sport while incorporating our character values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
YMCA Winners
Competitive, unique, values-based sports program for older boys and girls that develops skills and tactics while keeping our character values in play.
YMCA Champions
Designed to motivate youngsters to strive for excellence. It is an innovative, challenging awards program for youth participating in YMCA Winners.

The 7 pillars of Youth Super Sports:

Pillar 1 - Everyone Plays
Pillar 2 - Safety First
Pillar 3 - Fair Play
Pillar 4 - Positive Competition
Pillar 5 - Family Involvement
Pillar 6 - Sport for All
Pillar 7 - Sport for Fun

YMCA Youth Super Sports Programs include; Soccer, Flag Football, Basketball, Baseball and T-Ball.

For more information on Youth Super Sports offered see your YMCA Spirit, call or come in and inquire at the Welcome Center, or go to www.peninsulaymca.org.
Sports offered vary by community; please check with your local YMCA for availability.

 Will Your Y Get $250,000
For Free Fitness and Wellness Programs?

The Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA has applied for a grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project, and the only way we can get it is if you vote for us.  Our project, "Activate the Peninsula," will ensure fitness, nutrition, and cooking education programs for everyone in our community, as well as fitness education for all children in our child care and child/youth watch programs.
Check the Pepsi Refresh website www.refresheverything.com or search Pepsi Refresh on August 1 to see if we are there. To do this:

Click on the above address or search Pepsi Refresh
Click on Browse Ideas and Vote on the right side of the screen
Click on Join Refresh everything in the lower left side of the next screen
Create a login and password and answer a few basic questions on the pop up screen
Click done and you will bounce back to the home page - at this point you've just created your login
Click on Browse Ideas and Vote again and you will be at the voting page
Go to the search box in the upper right corner and type in Activate or Peninsula.
When you see our project in the list- Activate the Peninsula - click on the vote now button
Once you've created your login and password you can bookmark our page and go directly there to vote every day.

We need your vote EVERYDAY in August to make this a reality for our YMCA.   Please share this information with everyone you know - friends, relatives, co-workers, neighbors, and other Y members.  You can share through Facebook and Twitter by hitting the button that appears after you vote.  This project will benefit each Y and the people in each of our communities. We can only win the Pepsi Refresh grant if the community supports our efforts to "Activate the Peninsula."

Any questions? Talk to any staff member at our Y to help you through the process.
