Chris Gates, a 2005 graduate of Holland Hall, founded the JBFC with the purpose of helping the most underprivileged and deprived children of Tanzania, particulary street girls, by providing them with safe refuge, nutrition, education, healthcare, Christian nurturing, and hope for a new life.
Most of the girls are homeless as a result of losing parents to AIDS or malaria or come from abusive or neglectful situations. The orphanage is now home for more than 30 young girls aged 5-14; there are many more children on a waiting list, which means JBFC must find the resources to expand its capacity for caring for more children.

A portion of all proceeds from the sale of Penzo is passed on to benefit women, children, education and wildlife conservation efforts in Zimbabwe.
