The Music Education Program (MEP) at the ANU School of Music is a new paradigm for music education, based on the work of Dr. Diamond. It has been designed and developed over the past 15 years by Dr. Susan West - a long-time student of Dr. Diamond - in partnership with the ACT Department of Education and Training and artsACT.

The MEP is based on a social philosophy of shared, active music making through singing, known as the Music Outreach Principle. As the name implies, the Music Outreach Principle involves making music with the intent of altruistically reaching out to others. In essence, individuals involved are encouraged to think: "I make music in order that others will make music, for the benefit of all."

"I went to an art exhibition on the weekend by John Diamond. In his speech, Diamond continually stressed that he wasn't an artist, he was a holistic doctor that used art for therapeutic purposes. His speech was one of the most interesting that I've heard and his art was amongst the most gratifying."

"For Diamond, art seemed to be a tool, rather than an objective. I think this also helped explain his heavy focus on the importance of relationships, not only between him and his subjects, but between himself and the audience for his art."

(Above text by Wally De Villiers.)

"These pictures have all been done from the point of view to raise your Life Energy as you are looking at them, but also to encourage you to go and do them yourself."
