Dear Friends,
On the 25th of April, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments on Arizona's SB 1070. But we won't wait for their decision in June. We will join together now to speak up for the rights of all.
"Estamos Unidos" - which means "We are United" - is a campaign organized by the American Civil Liberties Union with our allies. The ACLU and partners have filed lawsuits challenging anti-immigrant laws in every state where they have passed, including Georgia, and stopped similar laws in 14 other states. The ACLU is also calling on President Obama to stop federal programs that further involve local police and sheriffs in immigration enforcement.
The ACLU Foundation of Georgia is organizing a petition drive to ask President Obama to stop anti-immigrant laws.
What: Petition Drive
When: Monday, April 30, 2012 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Plaza Fiesta, 4166 Buford Highway NE, Atlanta 30345
The ACLU is launching the Estamos Unidos campaign through a 10-day coast to coast tour - starting April 22 in California and ending May 1 in South Carolina. Through this journey, the ACLU and our partners will:
- collect and share the stories of people harmed by these policies and standing up for their rights;
- share information about the Constitutional rights of all;
- invite community members to participate in the online campaign (at www.miACLU.org, by texting UNIDOS to 74700, or by following Facebook.com/miACLU
- collect signatures on a Petition to President Obama to continue his opposition to S.B. 1070 copycat laws, and to reform the federal programs that have resulted in the record detentions and deportations of over 1million people during his first term in office.
Please join our campaign to stop discrimiation and ensure everyone's Constitutional rights.
Hope to see you on April 30th.
